Matthew joined Open Box Software to gain experience at a rapidly growing highly successful development house, with the view
to adding value, by analysing the existing network and server infrastructure and improving/upgrading where necessary. He
formed an integral part of the infrastructure team which oversaw the management and maintenance of all systems in the
environment, utilizing mostly Microsoft Windows & Active Directory, and supporting up to 100 staff members while ensuring
99.99% uptime, as required by the team SLA.

Responsibilities
 Respond to any problems experienced by staff on any system or platform, from PC’s to smart phones.
 Allocate security privileges as necessary and as quickly as possible to ensure staff efficiency.
 Provision new server project environments as new projects are commissioned, in a timely and meticulous manner.
 Prepare new or replacement machines for new staff, and ensure builds are kept up to date with all the software
necessary. Ensure new builds are also secure and up to date with patches and anti-virus/anti-malware.
 Prepare accounts for new staff, including communication and security privileges.
 Commission, upgrade, manage and maintain new and existing software applications and platforms in the environment.
 Ensure all essential systems and environments are backed up regularly and configure new environments for an
appropriate backup policy, to ensure that disk or raid destruction or corruption is not a problem.
 Configuration and Maintenance of all networking systems in the environment, and ensure documentation of all system
configurations and rules are up to date.
 Documentation compilation, updating and maintenance of all servers and devices in the environment.
 Also responsible for investigating issues which stumped the rest of the team and almost always found a solution.

Accomplishments
 Upgraded internal network equipment, reconfigured and segmented network into different sections to cut down on
broadcast traffic, which considerably sped up responsiveness of application and database services and improved staff
efficacy and efficiency.
 Prioritized routing of special traffic to client networks and servers using cisco ios features dramatically enhancing staff
experience and efficiency.
 Setup Linux Proxy and system monitoring alternatives to legacy Microsoft solutions, including alerts and redundancy.
 Provisioned newly acquired office space with cabling to accommodate 60+ new staff and future growth.
 Responsible for configuring of VPN access to Client Networks and security thereof, as well as configuring and
maintaining VPN services for staff to connect into the internal network and security thereof.

april 2006 – february 2008 Web Africa Systems/Network Administrator


Matthew joined Web Africa while studying CCNP in 2006, providing adsl support to Web Africa Customers, where he was quickly
promoted to hosting support and a great deal more responsibility and later to Network and Systems Administrator.

ADSL Support Responsibilities (April 2006 – June 2006)


 Provided support for ADSL, ISDN, and Dialup (Windows, Mac & Linux), provided support by means of an email ticketing
system, telephone and instant messenger.
Hosting Support Responsibilities (June 2006 – December 2006)
 Windows Server 2003 Server support – management, monitoring, software and application updates, server
administration and scheduled tasks; including backup and synchronisation.
 IIS Administration – website creation, application settings and modifications, virtual directory configuration,
troubleshooting, site migrations, and directory security on both Windows and Linux.
 Database administration – exposure to MYSQL, MS SQL 2000 & SQL 2005, connection strings, ODBC DSN’s and database
backups and restores on both Windows and Linux.
 Mail Administration – Experience with Mail Enable and Smartermail mail servers and spam filtering with Barracuda
Spam Firewall and user administration and troubleshooting.
 Domain Administration – experience with domain registrations, transfers, renewals, domain parking, and sub domain
configuration. Assisted customers with domain records such as MX, A, Cname, etc.
 Website Development – assist customers with code support and queries to an extent, exposure to php, asp, .NET,
coldfusion and CSS.
 SSL Administration – implemented dedicated and shared certificates and placed orders and renewals on behalf of

Matthew was then promoted to Network/Systems Administrator, and was individually responsible for managing multiple
networks, including the internal operations network which consisted of 80 staff and 30 servers and a production datacentre
network which hosted +-300 servers, both linux and windows. Initially all routing and networking was done by redundant Cisco
Switches and Routers. The routers were later replaced by Linux routers because they could handle greater loads and were more
cost effective than enterprise Cisco routers.

Network Manager Responsibilities (January 2007 – February 2008)


 Office/Wireless/Datacentre Network Management (+- 400 Devices)
 Managed routing configuration, updates, backups and troubleshooting.
 Managed IP address allocation and sub netting of all devices, and VLAN Configuration for customers and management.
 Managed IP migration from leased IP addresses to a Web Africa allocated block of IP addresses.
 Documentation of all networks and systems(diagrams, IP management and server management)
 Trained and mentored other staff members to be able to perform their responsibilities.

august 2003 – september 2007 Carnage.LAN Systems/Network Administrator


Matthew has always been a keen player of computer games and started off hosting small LAN parties since 2000 as a hobby and
a source of income. After coming back from England in 2003 and experiencing the competitive nature of European gaming
leagues and professional LAN parties, he endeavoured host LAN events such as those he experienced in the UK. Carnage.LAN
was born with family support and investment, a professional website with a registration system was created and all other
requirements were met.

Responsibilities
 Organising venue, food, security, event listing on website including details such as competitions, prizes, activities and
attendees.
 Setup of venue with network, electricity, tables for 300+ computers.
 Troubleshooting any customer Network or PC problems for the duration of the weekend. (kept me very busy)
 Organising gaming tournaments, communicating with players and teams to ensure competitions run smoothly and
finish on time.
 Ensure everyone had a good time, dealt with complaints and dealt with any disputes among attendees.

Accomplishments

 Responsible for hosting the largest LAN party in Cape Town from 2004 – 2006 with around 320 attendees.
 Hosted 4-6 tournaments each event and gave away cash prizes.
 Hosted a total of 39 events over the period of 4 years.
 Had a huge amount of Fun and made lots of friends and a great feeling of accomplishment after each event.
 The event was organised with very little help. Matthew and his brother Richard were the primary individuals
responsible. Richards focus was the website and Matthew’s focus was the Event.

I sold the business when I started working at Open Box Software in order to focus on professional career.
