On August 28th, 1963, Martin Luther King gave his historic ͞I Have a Dream͟ speech. This speech
proclaimed the social injustice that had endured for over a century. It called for the Liberty and the
Freedom of the African-American that the Constitution had laid out those many years ago. It spoke to
all races, to every man, woman, and child. Martin Luther King explained in his speech that true freedom
is not of oneͶbut of all. That to truly be a free people we must respect all people equally. He asked
those who had felt the persecution of this prejudice to continue on in their struggle. He asked them to
go back to their homes and have faith that eventually a change will come. He revealed that he had
dreamt of a day where all peoples could unite in brotherhood.

Hope from a man who had seen so much hatred is truly inspirational. In one part of the speech,
which I find particularly moving, Dr. King speaks of the faith he has in our nation. He proclaimed, ͞With
this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of
brotherhood.͟ Furthermore he stated, ͞With this faith, we will be able to work together, ͙ to struggle
together, ͙ to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.͟ This faith that Dr.
King possessed is truly remarkable considering the social climate of his times. His vision saw beyond the
bigotry and hate that stifled the country. It surpassed the status quo and worked to energize a nation
and its people. It was this faith in the good of all people that I believe Dr. King loved and fought for. It is
this hope that continues to inspire us today.

This speech became a rally cry to millions of African-Americans across the country. Dr. King
spoke of the injustice that had too long endured in American society. He shed light to the fact that the
American Dream was not being given to all menͶbut to some. However, he also shared a hope and
belief that America was not broke, but on the verge of an awakening. His aspirations for the America he
envisioned help to inspire countless others to pursue this dream as well. His speech became one of the
greatest speeches in American history. It became a catalyst for civil rights movements across the
country. From the K
to the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to the

the inspiration of Dr. King͛s speech could be seen throughout the late twentieth
century. Even today his dream helps to educate and inspire people to strive for liberty and equality ͙
for all people.
