A recent discussion over how often we should partake of the Lord s Supper has ins

pired me to write down my thoughts on the subject. Yes, there is no Thou Shalt P
artake in the Bible, but consider these things:
1. We are at war and Jesus is our leader. As a soldier I can tell you that tal
king with your leader on a radio and talking face to face are very different. T
alking face to face you get more than just verbal communication. You get body l
anguage, its usually not as rushed, and if needed there is physical contact (A b
oot upside the head, a handshake, or a hug).
2. The Bible says the church is the bride of Jesus. The Lord s Supper is a symbo
l of that union that is to come. You could say that it is the engagement ring o
f that relationship. All the women I ve ever known that were engaged never stoppe
d showing off their ring. How is it that some followers of Christ don t want to s
how this symbol to the world more than once or twice a year?
3. How about the simple fact that we are leaky vessels, some faster than others
, and need to be filled up often. A cup poured out needs to be refilled or it r
emains empty. Some might say to use prayer and the reading of God s word to fill
the cup and I wouldn t argue that truth. But in a long distance love relationship
reading letters and talking on the phone, although it does help keep the fire a
live, the more you are in each others presence the more warm, safe and secure yo
u feel, allowing you to cope better with the time spent apart.
4. Passover is observed for a whole week by Jews who were saved from earthly sl
avery (although they were taken back into slavery several times after Egypt by o
ther countries). How much more do you think they would observe it had they been
saved spiritually and given eternal life?
5. Every day we eat meals and a lot of those meals we eat alone or with strange
rs or even co-workers.
Jesus said that where two or three are gathered in his name that he would be the
re also. So why wouldn t we want to go and eat together as family as much as poss
ible?
6. There is also the letter to the church in Ephesus which gives us a warning.
Chapter 2 verses 4 & 5 (NIV) Yet I hold this against you: you have forsaken your
first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the
things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove y
our lampstand from its place. Isn t remembering the height from which we have fall
en and remembering our first love part of what we do every time we have the Lord s
Supper? Time and history has shown us that as a whole if we don t spend time rem
embering our past we tend to forget it and end up repeating it. Shouldn t we act
to prevent this from happening by taking time to remember as often as possible?

In conclusion there is no mandate for having the Lord s Supper often but their isn t
scripture forbidding it and the pros out way the cons.
OH - but wait - there is one more thing. What about Exodus 20:8 (NIV) Remember t
he Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Most of us don t observe the Sabbath - or do we
? Jesus says in Mt 12:8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath and in Mt 11:28
he also says Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you
rest. Col 2:13,14 says that God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all
our sins, having cancelled the written code, with its regulations, that was aga
inst us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away , nailing it to the cross.
Verses 16 & 17 go on to say Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you
eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or
a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things to come; the reality, however,
is found in Christ. And Hebrews 4: 9-11 says There remains then, a Sabbath-rest
for the people of God; for anyone who enters God s rest also rests from his own w
ork, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore make every effort to enter tha
t rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience. To
me that last underlined phrase says it all, we don t have to do it often but we s
hould make every effort.
