Sue and John Savemor have two children: Sidney and Sheila. The
Savemors are aware that our planet is threatened and they want to help
protecting the environment (lingkungan) by reducing pollution. To achieve
that aim (tujuan), the Savemors try to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle as
much as possible. They moved with some of their friends, who are
environment protectors, to a city called Recycle City. There, they settled
in a house which corresponds to their needs. They put solar panels on the roof to generate electricity. The
panels help heat water and power the home appliances.
Every house in Recycle City has an insulated attic to reduce the need of energy and conserve the
heat in the winter. The fireplace was made from old bricks (batu bata) that recovered (ditemukan) from a
building. The Savemors burn logs (kayu bakar) made from pressed wood. That kind of heating is less
polluting and much less expensive.
John keeps all the appliances, like the refrigerator and the cooker in good working order. They
follow the manufacturer’s suggestions for proper operation. In that way they use less electricity. When the
weather is hot, the Savemors hang clothes on the line to dry. It saves energy and makes clothes smell
great.
John has found a number of ways to use safer alternatives to substitute (menggantikan) toxic cleaners.
He uses biodegradable cleaners, vinegar, baking soda or even olive oil with lemon juice to polish the
furniture. They are natural and cost a little money. As for Sue, she holds a garage sale twice a year to sell
things she no longer wants or needs. She helps other people and gets some money in return.
The Savemors keep recycling bins in the kitchen. They recycle glass, paper, aluminium and other
metal cans. Sidney and Sheila built a compost bin in the yard after hearing about how to do it at school.
That’s how they get free fertilizer for the garden and reduce the amount of domestic wastes. The children
also used an old tire to make a swing. When Sydney cuts the grass, he follows his teacher’s instructions
and leaves the grass clippings on the lawn because all the nutrients go back right into the soil. All the
family members are doing their best to keep the environment clean for themselves and for the future
generations.
