Starving Fijian immigrant workers

work on farms foraged maize from a
paddock to feed themselves.
Otorohanga man Mike Neil Molan,
40, has pleaded guilty to one charge of
forgery and one charge of misleading
an immigration officer after a
sting at his company’s offices and
related Auckland-based immigration
consultants.
The scheme saw Fijian immigrants pay
thousands of dollars for bogus work
visas to work on dairy farms. A former
employee says she was aware of at
least 17 workers caught up in the scam.
Workers were taken on by Molan
to complete 12-week training
programmes on various Waikato
farms with two companies Molan was
a director of – Til Da Cows Come
Home and Cow Tech. At the end of the
programme, they were told they would
enter fulltime employment on dairy
farms and gain work visas.
However the visa applications were
forged and the jobs never existed.
Farmers used by Molan say they were
appalled at the situation he left his
workers in, unpaid and unfed.

“We were noticing that the guys didn’t
have anything to eat and they didn’t
have any supplies and they were
foraging for maize to eat.”
Mrs. Watson said she paid Til Da Cows
Come Home $800 for finding her
workers.
Waikato Times investigations have
shown immigrants were paying
recruitment companies associated with
Molan anywhere between $12,000 to
$17,000 to obtain work visas.
Mrs. Watson said she was told the
workers were being paid a wage which
went into a trust account, paid once
their training was finished and their
work visas approved.
“It was atrocious. He had quite a few
Fijian Indians that were coming from
Fiji to find a new life and make money
for their families and he was exploiting
them. We were paying what we thought
was a completely legitimate business,”
she said.
Manju Pillay was employed as accounts
and administration manager at Cow
Tech for three months. She paid $6000
of Molan’s $12,736 bill for residency
and a work permit before questioning
its legitimacy and returning to Fiji. She
says she never paid herself but would
sometimes go shopping to get food for
the workers.
“If the boys weren’t paid he would
tell them to come home and open the
freezer and take some bread and most
of the time the bread would be stale.
“Sometimes I did go shopping for
them; we used to have to buy our own
toilet paper and things.”
Molan worked with Auckland based
IMAC Recruitment and Romy’s
Immigration, which has since been
struck off the companies’ register.
Molan’s ex-wife Nikkie, who was a
director of the now defunct Cow Tech,
said she got wind of the scam in about
November 2008 and confronted Molan.
“Workers were paying up to $17,000
for work visas and it had been going on
since June or July 2008.
“It was just a way of getting cash out
of people.”
Mrs. Pillay said Molan had 17
employees when she was there. She
said Cow Tech went into liquidation
three months after she started working
for it and she contacted the Immigration
Department.
Molan will be sentenced in the High
Court at Hamilton on March 4.

THE former President, the Tui Vuda,
Ratu Josefa Iloiloivatu, has passed
away.
He celebrated his 90th birthday on
December 30 last year.
His death was announced by the
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama.
On Sunday, family sources had
confirmed his death at the Suva Private
Hospital.
His traditional warriors were already
present at the hospital guarding the
“Ratu Iloilo’s chiefly qualities and
status endowed him with great wisdom
and leadership attributes which ensured
the stability and progress of our nation
through one of its most trying times. As
President, he was our beacon of hope.
“This is Ratu Iloilos legacy, which
places him amongst the ranks of our
great statesmen.
“His strong Christian values guided
his unwavering commitment to
bringing unity to our nation and its
entire people.

The Fiji Labour Party mourns the death of
the former President and Tui Vuda Ratu
Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda.
In a statement, the party said that Ratu
Iloilo’s term as President had been
marked by some hard decisions during the
country’s time of need.
“However, it must be remembered that
he served during difficult times and was
constantly under pressure from various
political groups, all pulling in different
directions,” the party said.
“Against this backdrop, it is a credit to
his tenacity and sagacity that he remained
in office as long as he did, balancing the
interests of the nation against pressures on
him.”
Paying personal tribute to the former
President, Labour leader Mahendra
Chaudhry said that as an individual, Ratu
Iloilo was an extremely affable and pleasant
person. “He was a simple man who was
forced by circumstances into complicated
and duplicitous world of Fiji politics - a
task that he handled with some skill,” Mr
Chaudhry said. The FLP extends deepest
sympathies to Adi Salaseini Kavunono
and the children and the people of Vuda on
their bereavement.
Ratu Iloilo, 90 had a long and illustrious
career as a primary school teacher and later
as an administrator in the civil service.
His political career began with his election
to the House of Representatives in 1977
as the Alliance Member of Parliament for
Vanua Levu. He did not seek re-election
in 1982 but served briefly as Minister
for Forests in the pre-election Caretaker
Government in 1992. In June 1992, he was
appointed to the Senate. From June 1996,
he served as President of the Senate. He was
appointed Fiji’s Vice-President in January
1999. Ratu Josefa assumed the office of
the President of Fiji on May 29, 2000 in
the aftermath of the May 19 takeover from
Parliament. He was later confirmed in that
post by the Great Council of Chiefs on July
13 and remained as Head of State for the
next nine years until his retirement at the

Fiji needs quality health
care
FIJI needs good quality health facilities
and well-trained health professionals to
provide better health care.
This was the comment by Fiji School of
Medicine dean, Professor Ian Rouse, at the
launch of the Ministry of Health’s standard
treatment guideline (STG), procedure and
policy manual for nurses and the clinical
David LINGHAM procedure guideline (CPG) at the Colonial
War Memorial Hospital.
Publisher Professor Rouse said the guidelines would
be of great help to Fiji’s health sector and
help improve services.
He said Fiji like any Pacific Island
nation needed facilities that were of good
quality and well-trained dynamic health
professionals.
However he said having good quality
facilities would be of no use if there were
no procedures of guidelines to guide the
health professionals.

project in 2009 for a total cost of $500,000
over a two-year period.
Ms Goulding said the FHSIP team worked
with the Clinical Services Network
(CSN) to develop the CPG and helped to
standardize them across the country for
individual disciplines and medicine.
“Last year, (CSN) initiative focused on
developing and implementing plans and
standards concerning clinical service
delivery around the country and forming
specialist networks to advocate on areas of
need,” she said.
Ms Goulding said the nationally-endorsed
practice guidelines in the manual would
assist in reducing clinical variation in
treatments, which would assist and
protect clinicians to practice more safely,
by providing them with guidelines for
evidence-based safe practice.
“Today, we see the results of the hard work
by the 11 clinical services networks that
have been established and it is our hope
that these guidelines may assist in reducing
clinical treatment variation and improve
patient experience,” she said.

only improve the patients’ experience but

THE Government will soon work
on having inter country agreements
on the adoption of children.
Social Welfare permanent secretary
Govind Sami said his department
had received enquiries regarding
the matter from other countries,
particularly our metropolitan
neighbours, Australia and New
Zealand.
However, because of the lack of an
agreement between the countries,
adoption of Fijian children by
foreigners had been put on hold, Mr
Sami said.
The department, however, is still
processing local adoptions.
Mr Sami said the process could take
six to eight months before approval
was given for the legal adoption of
a child.
He said, potential parents would be
screened and put through various
checks.
Following the adoption, there
is a “cooling period” before the
department will check on the child
and the “new” family again.
Children who come under State
care usually are either abandoned,
victims of abuse or have nowhere
else to go, Mr Sami said.
“The recent statistics from the
ministry and the police reveal that
between the years 1995 to 2009 a
total of 1008 cases of child neglect
were reported followed by the
following: 666 sexual cases, 610
physical abuse, 430 beyond control
cases, 314 abandon and lost cases,
250 cases of emotional abuse.
“The cost of neglect cannot be
measured in dollars. It has lifelong
repercussions to an individual and
society,” the permanent secretary
said.

Tonga’s prime minister has warned
Australia and New Zealand that
bullying Fiji’s military regime to
adopt democracy will drive it closer
to China, but reaffirmed his own
country’s bonds with its regional “big
brothers”.
Lord Tu’ivakano, who became prime
minister following Tonga’s first
popular elections in November, said
his country had successfully managed
its own transition to democracy and
neighboring Fiji should be allowed to
do the same.
The 59-year-old, a member of
Tonga’s noble class, said he was
concerned that efforts by Canberra
and Wellington to force Fiji into
holding elections would backfire as
the regime in Suva was resistant to
outside interference.
“(People) in the Pacific, if you keep
bothering them, they will do the
opposite,” Tu’ivakano told AFP in an
exclusive interview Tuesday.
“Just go easy, the more pressure you
give, they will just turn (away). It’s
good to have dialogue with Fiji.”

will create more harmony within the

He said foreign aid from all sources
was welcome to achieve his plans but
did not envisage Tonga embracing
Beijing to the same extent as Fiji,
instead relying on traditional partners

A delegation from the Vanua o Vuda visited
His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli
Nailatikau at Government House this morning
to traditionally inform him of the passing
of the late Turaga na Tui Vuda and former
President Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda.
Later, at about 9am the delegation called
upon the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama at his residence.
The delegation, told both His Excellency the
President and the Prime Minister that the late
Turaga na Tui Vuda will be laid to rest next
Thursday, February 17, 2011.
Following the meeting with the Vanua of
Vuda, the Organising Committee for the State
funeral met and confirmed the following:
•The body of the late Ratu Iloilo will leave the
Suva Private Hospital at 10am next Monday,
February 14 for Government House where he
will lie in state in the State Room.
•The late Turaga na Tui Vuda’s casket will
travel through Waimanu Road, Mark Street,
Thompson Street, link up to Victoria Parade
and pass through Queen Elizabeth Drive and
up to Government House through the main
gate.
•These roads will be closed to all traffic.
•However, members of the public who may
wish to observe their final respects are invited
to stand along the sidewalks with respectful
silence as the casket passes through on its way
to Government House.
•The diplomatic corp. civil society
organizations or groups can pay their final
respects to the late Turaga na Tui Vuda while
he lies in state.
•All traditional presentations of i-reguregu are
encouraged to be made to the Vanua o Vuda
at Viseisei.
•Nevertheless, those that cannot make it
to Vuda can also present their ireguregu at
Government House while the former President
lies in State.
•Government will convey the body of the late
Tui Vuda to the Vanua o Vuda on Tuesday,
February 15.
•The procession will march along the main
street of the city.
•The march will extend through to the old
Government Supplies building at Walu Bay
before the chiefly hearse, escorted by the
Republic of Fiji Military Forces, continues the

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama has expressed his concerns
about the alleged misuse of his name by
people to obtain money and gifts.
He raised his concerns after a Suva lawyer
and a businessman were taken into custody
for alleged fraud, including obtaining money
from foreign investors by allegedly misusing
the Prime Minister’s name.
“Of course I am worried,” Commodore
Bainimarama said.
“Anyone will be worried if the same happens
to them.”
Commodore Bainimarama said the
investigation on the two was currently
being undertaken by the Fiji Independent
Commission Against Corruption (FICAC)
and Police.
The two allegedly obtained money from
an investor who was here for a gas and oil
exploration project.
The lawyer was also alleged to have obtained
money from another foreign investment
company.
Commodore Bainimarama declined to
comment further, saying everything was
being handled by FICAC.

Threats were allegedly made by the
businessman to the investor.
“The businessman had threatened that
money be given to him whenever he wanted
it or else his uncle (a senior military officer)
would deport him (the investor),” a source
said.
“The investor asked him once why his car
window was tinted and he said it was because
the vehicle was used by the Prime Minister
on weekends for personal runs.”
When contacted, Police spokesperson
Atunaisa Sokomuri said he had no
information about the case.
Inspector Sokomuri said the FICAC would
be the best people to talk to because the
suspects were believed to be in their custody.

Fiji Government likely to tour Russia

RUSSIA’S ambassador Mr Vladimir
Morozov met with Prime Minister
Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama.
The closed-door meeting lasted less than
an hour.
Commodore Bainimarama told Mr
Morozov of Fiji’s interest in touring
Russia to exchange ideas on how the
two countries could work together and
develop bilateral relations.
He said Fiji would love to tap into
Russia’s tourism market and other
relevant areas.
“We could arrange for a visit to Russia
later in the year for tourism and trade,”
Commodore Bainimarama told Mr
Morozov.
“The trip will be to see ways in which Fiji
and Russia can strengthen their relations
on trade and tourism.”
Mr Morozov said it was part of the
Russian Government’s plan.
“The trip will go ahead and it’s intended
for later this year,” he told the Prime
Minister.
“Preliminary discussions are underway
for the Moscow trip and a date will be
confirmed later, once the logistics are
finalized.”
Mr Morozov called on the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs office in Suva and
later presented his credentials to His
Excellency the President Ratu Epeli
Nailatikau at Government House.
Mr Morozov and Ratu Tui then explored
areas of mutual cooperation between
the two countries and how these may be
advanced to benefit both countries.
Fiji products hit European
markets
ALEX and Ana Theofanous are the

to $900,000 in the process.
In the three years that have passed
alone, Glitterati Distributions is
now the major supplier of Pure Fiji
products in the UK and Ireland.
They are also catering for emerging
markets in Italy, Austria, Spain,
Greece, Cyprus, and other parts of
Europe.
The couple admitted they did not face
any difficulty promoting Pure Fiji
products which were proving to be
quite popular with consumers in their
expanding European markets.
“For most Europeans, the idea of
a line of products as exotic as Pure
Fiji’s coming from such a small place
in the world is really appealing. They
want to find out as much as they can
about the country and as result their
interest in the product grows,” Mrs.
Theofanous said.

American tourist ‘honored’ to SCREENING MACHINES FOR

AN American tourist feels privileged to be
visiting Fiji at this time of the year.
36-year-old Glenn Fasnacht of Colorado
as he joined Viseisei villagers clean-up the
village to prepare for the State funeral of
the late Tui Vuda Ratu Josefa Iloilo.
Mr Fasnacht said he was privileged to
experience first-hand the Fijian traditions
and culture. “I am honored to be here
especially learning the circumstances
when I heard that he was a very great man
and a great teacher,” he said.
“It’s a sad loss for everybody and I am
privileged to be part of the village in
cleaning up.”
“It was already poised to be a memorable
moment getting to stay in a real traditional
Fijian village apart from the resorts. But to
be here at this very special time and live
where the late chief lived is even more
special.
“Everybody has been positive despite the
sad circumstances and I feel like a friend
even though I am just here for one day.”
He said his contribution in cleaning up
might go unnoticed but was grateful to be
part of Fiji’s history in bidding goodbye to
a great statesman.

FIJI Water and Cure Kids Fiji in
association with Accor Hotels Fiji
have formed a partnership to purchase
screening machines to detect rheumatic
heart disease in children.
Speaking at a roll giving ceremony
held at Yaqara, FIJI Water Foundation’s
manageress Fane Niumataiwalu said
the machines would be vital in helping
doctors at Nadi Hospital detect the illness
in young children.
“This will help doctors get a better
diagnosis with what we believe is a
growing heart condition in the country,”
she said.
Cure Kids has recently set up an office
and is registered locally and is currently
working with FIJI Water to purchase this
valuable equipment.
Receiving their gift from FIJI Water,
Severo Tagicakiverata, sales manager
at Accor said they were grateful for the
assistance provided by FIJI Water and
more details about the partnership would
be announced as discussions between the
two organizations progressed.

New complex for Pure Fiji

PURE Fiji celebrated its new location
beside its Vatuwaqa factory.
The celebration was attended by the
owners’ family and friends, Pure Fiji
overseas distributors and the media.
Guests were entertained by the
Conservatorium of Music and
humorous antics of Pure Fiji staff.
After its purchase, Pure Fiji
immediately began upgrading
existing buildings on the property
adding an outdoor dining area for
staff and parking lot for visitors, staff
and tenants of the property.
The blessing of the new complex also
marked the launch of the company’s
Zenergy Centre that would feature a
suspended wooden floor suitable for
low impact exercises.
It would be located on the third floor
of the main building on the new
property.
The centre would accommodate 35
people at a time and would be open
to fitness trainers or local art and craft
exhibitions.
According to Pure Fiji, the centre
would serve the recreational needs of
the community.
Pure Fiji co-founder and director
Gaetane Austin, while addressing
guests, reminded them of the natural
resources that were rich in the country.
She urged people to work with
resources that were available to them.
“Not once did I think all those 14 years
ago when we first began working on
our products on a table at home that it
would come to this,” she said.
“I would like to thank everyone who
has had a hand in the success of Pure
Fiji from the bottom of my heart.”
Pure Fiji had gained worldwide
recognition in recent years for the
quality of its products.

Kava ban for civil servants Vodafone to launch in Labasa

Civil servants had been told not to drink
kava during working hours or in any
Government premises.
Public Service Commission Permanent
Secretary Parmesh Chand said a circular
instruction was in place on the ban.
Mr Chand’s reaction followed the
suspension of 12 Public Works Department
employees earlier this week because of
drinking kava during working hours.
“There is strictly no drinking of kava
allowed during working hours in any
Government premises,” Mr Chand said.
“The rules and directives are very clear on
this.”
Mr Chand said any civil servant found
breaching the rules would be disciplined
in line with established procedures in the
civil service.
“It will be seen as a breach of code of
conduct and anyone found to be in such
breach gets subjected to disciplinary
action,”
PSC has also issued a stern warning to civil
servants that it will have zero tolerance for
breaches of the Public Service Code of
Conduct.
Commission chairman Josefa Serulagilagi
said there were marked improvements in
handling of cases pertaining to breaches
of code of conduct and abuse of office last
year.
“In this regard, there was full operation
of work activities of the Public Service
Disciplinary Tribunal,” Mr Serulagilagi
said.
“This allowed a quicker turnaround in
hearing and determination of disciplinary
cases and at the same time, provided an
opportunity to the commission to focus
on strategic and bigger picture issues and
policy matters.”

launched in Labasa on February 24.
The World of Difference is a global
flagship programme which has to date
allowed over 700 individuals around the
world to volunteer for their dream charity
while being paid their salary and project
expenses.
The programme aims to build capacity in
organizations and enhance organization-
effectiveness with a particular focus on
building social leadership in youths and
communities.
Foundation executive officer Ambalika
Kutty said this global initiative gave
ordinary people an opportunity to literally
make a difference to a community or
project that they connect with.
“Currently being run in several Vodafone
operations across the world, the programme
has impacted thousands of lives across the
globe,” Ms Kutty said.
She said this year the WOD programme
would be nationally-launched in Labasa.
“Interested people and charity organizations
who wish to help their communities can
file in their applications,” Ms Kutty said
She said candidates would work with
charities of their choice on projects that
would bring about positive changes in the
community.
“Our motivation is driven by our passion to
promote volunteerism, community work,
enhance knowledge and skill transfer in
community-based programmes,” Ms Kutty
said.
She said the charities and communities
would benefit from the exchange of skills,
knowledge and goodwill between World
of Difference participants and the project
partners.

ICBC's top five tips for buying a used vehicle
How to protect yourself from making a mistake on a major investment
Buying a vehicle is a significant
investment so why wouldn't you do your
homework to ensure you know what
you're really buying — especially when
that vehicle is a used one?
Inflated prices, hidden damage,
mechanical problems, liens, impulse
buys — we've all heard the horror stories.
But buying a used vehicle doesn't have
to feel like a risk.
We've recently enhanced the ICBC
Vehicle Claims History report to help our
customers make sure their used vehicle
purchase is a good one. The report now
provides even more purchase protection
for our customers by including warnings
that the vehicle may be in an unsafe
condition and require an inspection, and
it will also indicate if the vehicle is listed
by the police as stolen. We've made these
improvements and more at no extra cost.
If you're shopping for a used vehicle,
you can purchase the report at icbc.
com. About 275,000 of these reports
are purchased every year and they're
also used by B.C.'s vehicle dealers,
Autoplan brokers and our own Special

There are many ways to protect yourself
as you potentially make a major
investment in a used vehicle. Here are

No. 1 — Find the right model for

Indian community outraged by irresponsible media and
mis-representations in New Zealand

A recently inaugurated media watchdog,
the Hindu Media Watch feels that while the
tragic death of Indo-Fijian nurse Ranjeeta
Sharma in Huntley, Waikato, New Zealand,
revealed the vicious and nasty side of
human nature, it also subtly exposed the
ugly, insensitive and irresponsible stance of
some NZ media.
A report in the Waikato Times of January 23
and subsequently speculated and reported
in Fairfax’s influential and widely-quoted
website, “Stuff” branded and effectively
euphemised a seemingly calculated cold-
blooded murder as an Indian ritual of
“honour killing.” Hindu Media Watch
believes that this unsubstantiated,
uneducated and incorrect information on
ethnic culture was gullibly swallowed by
other media, including TV 3, subsequent to
an interview with Roy Vellara, President of
Waikato Indian Cultural Society.
The Stuff reported that:”Police would not
comment on whether the case was a “bride
burning”, or honour killing, a form of
domestic violence practised on the Indian
subcontinent when a victim had brought
shame on the family. But the manner in
which Mrs Sharma died did not surprise
Waikato Indian Cultural Society president
Roy Vellara, who said the name Sharma
was common in North India where most
honour killings were performed. Mr Vellara
said people were burned alive as it was a
way to get rid of any evidence and could
be considered an accident. Reasons for the
killing were often due to dowry the payment
by a woman’s family to her new husband or
adultery. “
Outraged at such statements, and
subsequent other copy-cat ethnic-tagging
and racial-stereotyping by media prompted
some concerned Indo Fijians and Indians
to call meetings in Auckland to show their
concerns and disappointment at the “media-
bashing’ of a community on speculative
reporting of a tragic incident.
The meetings held in Manukau and
West Auckland on January 27 and 28
respectively resolved to form a media
watchdog, Hindu Media Watch which
would monitor and report on distortions and
sensationally hurting issues affecting ethnic
communities, especially, Indians in general
and Hindus in particular. This organisation
is a division of Hindu Council of NZ. The
inaugural Coordinator and spokesperson
of Hindu Media Watch, Rakesh Krishnan
expressed his disappointment at the way
media handled this tragic happening in the
ethnic migrant community, which is rarely
represented in the newsrooms of media
which tend to report on stories hurting to
ethnic minorities.
As a result of such dereliction of its
responsibilities by some media, Krishnan
said that Hindu Media Watch was intending

“A number of communities have raised
great concerns about the negative labelling
by targeting a particular last name and
stigmatising manner in which some
community groups have been sought to be
labelled as condoning of “honour killing”
by some fringe organisations claiming to
be Indian but only seeking cheap publicity
and following a bigoted agenda, sensation
seeking journalists and news media” said a
statement from Hindu Media Watch.
The media watch group regretted the fact
that malicious attempts had been made
to malign people with a certain surname,
and the incident was even more abhorrent
than the one where TV 1 journalist Paul
Henry mocked the surname “Dixit”, and
was eventually forced to resign. Perhaps
he escaped too lightly, since the current
incident showed that no lessons had been
learnt by irresponsible and apparently ill-
trained and insensitive journalists.
Other community organisations and leaders
have also slated the media tagging by race,
surname and “honour killing” which tended
to lessen the seriousness, magnitude and
gravity of a violent killing.

Ramayan Mandali, an Auckland-based
Indian religious society, told the NZ
Herald that honour killings were “very
uncommon” in Fiji, while Auckland Indian
Society president Harshad Patel said media
speculation that Mrs Sharma’s death was
an “honour killing” was premature and it
seemed unlikely to be the case. He added that
such incidents were nonexistent in civilised
societies, especially in New Zealand.
According to radio Australia, human rights
activists and Director of Fiji Women’s
Crisis Centre, Shameema Ali expressed
scepticism about reports in New Zealand
media speculating that the death of Ranjeeta
Sharma in Auckland may have been an
honour killing, as such incidents do not
happen in Fiji among Indo Fijians.
Krishnan said they have received numerous
concerns from members of other community
organisations. He added that the meetings in
Manukau and West Auckland were called
because of the concern of the community
at unabated Indian and Hindu-bashing
and distorted reporting on ethnic issues
by some media in New Zealand despite
attempts at correcting such disinformation.
The formation of Hindu Media Watch was
in response to such habitual lackadaisical
attitude of some NZ media towards ethnic
reporting.

the irresponsible reporting by the Waikato
Times journalist and the failure of Stuff.

about a certain Asian reporter at The New
Zealand Herald who is known to have a
habit of reporting on ill-researched and ill-
informed stories on Indians and Hindus
without getting information from reliable
and credible sources. As a result the media
watch representatives, expressing the
concerns of the community would meet
the media organisation to raise its concerns
about their poor journalism standards on
ethnic reporting.
Krishnan said that some issue rests with
ethnic communities themselves who
are represented by ignorant and divisive
leadership. As a result, the community and
Hindu Media Watch seek an apology from
the President of Waikato Indian Cultural
Society, Roy Vellara and call him to step
down from his position for bringing disrepute
and division in the Indian community. This
is because he stands out as an individual
who was unworthy of occupying such a
position where he maligns the community
he is supposed to protect and honour.

A man attending an illegal cockfight in
California died after being stabbed in the
leg by one of the birds, officials have said.
The cock had a knife attached to its limb
to take part in the gambling fight in Tulare
County, central California.
Jose Luis Ochoa, 35, was declared dead in
hospital where he arrived some two hours
after being injured.
The coroner’s report said he had suffered
an accidental “sharp force injury” to his
right calf.

Woman locked in Brazil
house for 20 years
POLICE in Brazil said on Friday they had
freed a 45-year-old woman who had been
locked in a house for 20 years with no
communication with the outside world.
Police in the state of Parana said the woman
was locked in the home by her partner, a
60-year-old man, in the city of Mariluz,
550km from the state capital Curitiba.
Following a complaint by social workers,
police arrived at the house to find it closed
but heard the voice of a woman who
appeared to be calling for help, a police
statement said.

attending fights as a spectator are all
classified as misdemeanors on the first
offence, rather than more serious criminal
offences in the state.
Hassan never denied killing her but said
she had abused him and that he had acted in
self-defence. He served as his own lawyer
during the three-week trial.
Hassan, who founded a Muslim-oriented
TV network, could face life in prison.
Prosecutors argued Hassan abused his
wife and planned the attack in a hallway
at Bridges TV, a satellite channel he set
up in 2004 in an effort to counter negative
portrayals of Muslims following the 9/11
terror attacks.
He was arrested in 2009 after he walked
into a police station in the city of Buffalo,
in upstate New York, and told officers his
wife was dead.
Mrs Hassan, 37, had filed for divorce after
enduring domestic violence, her lawyer
told the Buffalo News newspaper in 2009.
The couple had been married for eight
years and had two children.

to ‘winter’ time starting from autumn of

need to adapt to the time change each year

PORT MORESBY: Residents of a Papua
New Guinea mining town say they found a
man with a history of drug abuse allegedly
eating his screaming, newborn son during
a sorcery initiation ceremony.
Police said locals on the outskirts of the
town of Tabubil, in Western Province,
woke on Thursday to the screams of the
baby.
Beset with the grisly sight of the father
allegedly eating his child, an angry mob
chased him to the police station where he
was detained after a short struggle.
Police said the discovery was too late to
save the baby, who died of his injuries.

said officers had detained a man and his
wife to assist them with their inquiries.

Canadians open to shorter
mortgage term: Poll
More than half of Canadians would consider
a shorter term for their mortgages to save on
interest costs in the long run, according to a
BMO survey.
Those aged 35 to 44 were the most open to
shorter amortizations, with 77% saying it was
something they would consider. The survey
also found 70% of families with children
would consider shorter amortizations,
compared with 48% of those without children.
To curb excessive borrowing, the government
is cutting the maximum length of time a
mortgage can be taken out with government
insurance from 35 years to 30 years. Longer
time spans means initial mortgage payments

Yet another winter storm has hit Atlantic
Canada, knocking out power and forcing
widespread school closures.
Harsh weather has plagued Atlantic
Canada this winter. There’s been almost
one major storm per week since the
season began, according to The Weather
Network.
Nova Scotia and P.E.I received the brunt
of it Wednesday, with most schools across
both provinces shutting down for the day.
In Nova Scotia, blowing snow warnings
were issued early in the morning for
Cumberland County north, the Cobequid

A Surrey woman is suing her ex-business A news story in the Vancouver Province -ÊLesÊMitchell

partner for what she says is her rightful share
of a $12.6-million lottery jackpot won more
than two years ago.
Maria Ganguin has filed a lawsuit with the
B.C. Supreme Court in which she claims she
is owed half the winnings picked up in 2008
by Maria Linsenmeier and Daniel Fehr.
Ganguin said she and Linsenmeier ran a
catering business together and had agreed to
share any winnings from lottery tickets they
purchased.
The lawsuit claims that Ganguin was led to
believe it was her partner’s husband who
bought the ticket.
“My client says she was notified by her partner
that there had been a winning,” said Ganguin’s
lawyer, Stephen Herman. “But that it was a
winning on a lottery ticket purchase by her
partner’s husband, Mr. Fehr.”
Herman said if that was so, Ganguin might not

quotes Linsenmeier as saying she bought the
ticket while on her catering route, saying, “I
just bought the Quick Pick with the Extra,
$11 in total, and when I went to validate it, I
thought something was wrong because all the
numbers came up on the screen.”
The B.C. Lottery Corporation has also been
named by Ganguin in the legal action.
“The lottery corporation has an obligation to
ensure before they release the funds that the
rightful owner receives the winnings,” said
Herman. “And to the extent that was not done
in this case, we say that the lottery corporation
may well have failed in its obligation to my
client.”
Ganguin is seeking half the lottery jackpot,
plus damages, alleging the conduct of
Linsenmeir and Fehr was “egregious, high-
handed and offensive.”

weddings when decorated with frosting

3 cloves garlic, minced
5 pounds whole leg of lamb
1 teaspoon coarse sea salt
Directions:
In a small bowl, combine the honey,
mustard, rosemary, ground black pepper,
lemon zest and garlic. Mix well and
apply to the lamb. Cover and marinate
in the refrigerator overnight.
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230
degrees C).
Place lamb on a rack in a roasting pan
and sprinkle with salt to taste.
Bake at 450 degrees F (230 degrees C)
for 20 minutes, then reduce heat to 400
degrees F (200 degrees C) and roast for
55 to 60 more minutes for medium rare.
The internal temperature should be at
least 145 degrees F (63 degrees C) when
taken with a meat thermometer. Let the
roast rest for about 10 minutes before
carving.
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano
1 teaspoon chopped fresh basil
2 teaspoons chopped fresh parsley
1/2 (1 pound) loaf Italian bread, cut
into 1 inch slices
1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan
cheese
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200
degrees C).
In a medium bowl, combine tomatoes,
onion, olive oil, oregano, basil and
parsley. Place bread on a baking sheet,
and top with tomato mixture. Sprinkle
with Parmesan.
Bake in preheated oven for 8 to 10
minutes, or until bottom of bread is
browned. Allow to cool 5 minutes
before serving.

Telus to start unlocking its phones

Telus will begin unlocking its SIM-card based
wireless devices for a $50 fee starting Feb. 15.
The unlocking service, which allows the
phone to be used on a different carrier’s
network, will be available at all Telus stores
for existing customers who have compatible
phones, company spokeswoman Anne-Julie
Gratton confirmed on Monday.
That means it will be offered on Telus
phones using HSPA technology and also the
company’s Mike brand phones.
To be eligible for the service, customers
must:
•Be on a monthly plan.
•Have a device that is active and has been on
the Telus network for at least 90 days.
Phones under Telus’s Koodo brand are
already available for unlocking.
Gratton said the move is Telus’s latest attempt
to improve the “customer experience” and is
targeted at customers who want to use their
phones on long overseas trips or customers
who upgrade their phones and want to sell or
give away their old phones.
The unlocking will be available to eligible
customers regardless of whether they are
contracts or have subsidized phones — those
sold to customers at a discount when they
sign contracts with Telus. The unlocking
service will not affect contracts.
Rogers and Fido began providing handset
unlocking for $50 on Dec. 14, but it’s only
available to customers who have paid the
unsubsidized purchase price for the phone or
have finished their contract.
This has led to pressure from consumers
and their advocates to push for phones to be
available unlocked so that providers can be
switched without having to buy a new phone,
forcing wireless providers to compete more
with one another.
Mel Fruitman, spokesman for the Consumers’
Association of Canada, said Telus’s move is a
step in the right direction.
“How good it is depends on the specifics of
the case, unfortunately,” he said.
For example, it would be a good deal if the
phone is bought at a price subsidized by the
carrier, and consumers don’t get charged
a large connection fee when they move to
another carrier, he said.
Gratton said Telus accepts customers who
come with unlocked handsets but can’t
guarantee the phone will work properly
with its network. Such customers pay the
same $35 account setup fee as other Telus
customers.
Rogers similarly charges the same $35
account setup fee for customers who buy
Rogers handsets and those who come with
their own.
Consumers can get their devices unlocked
at some wireless retailers and online for far
less than $50. However, Gratton said Telus
works with manufacturers to guarantee that
the device will work properly on the Telus
network after it is unlocked.
Private member’s bill
Last June, NDP MP Bruce Hyer introduced
a private member’s bill called the cellphone
freedom act that would require wireless
providers to:
•Notify customers whether a phone is locked
to work only on their network.
•Remove the lock free of charge at the end of
the customer’s service contract.
•Remove the lock if the customer does not
enter into a contract within six months of
buying the device up front.
Some manufacturers and wireless device
retailers have also started offering their
devices unlocked.
Last June, Apple confirmed that customers
would be able to buy the iPhone 4 unlocked
in Canada. It sells the unlocked 16-gigabyte
version for $659. In contrast, a locked version
is $160, when sold with a three-year contract
from Bell, Rogers or Telus.

WestJet, Delta in interline deal Crown and gov’t lawyers in

Calgary-based WestJet announced Monday it
has signed an interline agreement with Delta
Air Lines.
The deal allows fliers on WestJet and Delta
flights to purchase connecting flights on one
ticket, receive boarding passes for all segments
at their first check-in, and tag bags through to
their final destination.
The agreement takes effect immediately
at more than 25 airports in Canada and the
United States.
“This news today demonstrates that we
continue to deliver on our strategic plan to
establish partnerships with airlines from
around the world,” said WestJet executive vice
president Hugh Dunleavy.
“Delta is an established, worldwide airline,
and this interline agreement will open yet
another channel for guests from around the
globe to connect to WestJet’s network.”
WestJet already has interline agreements
with American Airlines, British Airways, Air
France/KLM and China Airlines.
WestJet has said it aims to turn these interline
agreements into full code-sharing partnerships,
where each airline sells seats on the other’s
flights and shares the revenue. It already has a
code-sharing relationship with Cathay Pacific.
Quebec begin legal strike
dubbed a Canadian first
In what’s being billed as a Canadian first,
Crown prosecutors and government lawyers
have gone on strike in Quebec, adding a pile
of delayed cases onto the backlog already
plaguing the province’s justice system.
Hundreds of criminal cases were sidelined
when 1,450 lawyers and prosecutors walked
off the job on Tuesday, emptying countless
courtrooms and inspiring memorable
protests in Montreal and Quebec City.
About 350 lawyers in black robes marched
Key issues include pay and workload.
Prosecutors want their salaries to grow
enough — about 40 per cent — so that
they would be comparable with those of
counterparts elsewhere in Canada. Quebec
prosecutors top out at about $102,000 a year,
compared to their Ontario counterparts who
earn as much as $196,000.
They also want the government to hire 200
new lawyers to help alleviate their workload.

January housing starts rise

Canada is on track to start building 170,400
units of housing this year, about 10 per
cent less than in 2010, according to figures
released Tuesday.

Fijian Soccer League of Greater Vancouver
should consider having two divisions for the
premier teams says former Eagles F.C soccer
coach Saizad Khan.
He said the legislators of the Association
ought to reduce the 12-team premier division
to super premier and premier divisions;

Khan believes the top six super premier
teams would give a breath of fresh hope to

“Lets be honest here, some teams get beat
to a pulp. How fair is that? And where are
we headed, by introducing this new system,
we’ll see evenly contested matches,” said
Khan.
He’s convinced the new initiative will
enhance the level of the competitions and
draw huge fans.
The former Eagles coach has seen for years
the bottom 6 teams struggle and get routed,
not that they didn’t give it all but their
performance compared to the opponents

rounds, home and away series to determine

UFC 130: Rampage Jackson, Rashad Evans Slap Each Other

As if there wasn’t already enough heat, now there’s
more. While some fans have expressed dismay at
the idea Thiago Silva may be removed from UFC
130’s card, it appears there is unfinished business.
Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer reports the
two were in a night club together over the weekend
and when they ran into each other, problems arose.
The real main event for UFC 130 may end up being
a rematch with Quinton Jackson vs. Rashad Evans.
Jackson is currently scheduled to face Thiago Silva,
and as of a few hours ago, that was still scheduled,
although those in Silva’s camp admitted they had
a bad feeling about it. The Nevada State Athletic
commission a few hours ago listed 14 fighters from
the 1/1 show whose urine tests came back clean.
They also said there is one test pending. By process
of elimination, given that every other name tested
but Silva was listed as clean, that would say his is
pending. Evans is apparently being looked at for
the sport in what would be a grudge match. Jackson
and Evans were at a night club in Las Vegas over
the weekend and Jackson slapped Evans, who
slapped him back before the situation was broken
up.
Promoting a fight often results in a serious descent
into idiocy. Or it results into nothingness. The hype
for Michael Bisping vs. Wanderlei Silva was a
moment where both fighters professed to hate one
another and yet, when pressed for a reason were
reduced to “I don’t know, I just do”. In this instance,
however, the dispute between Evans and Jackson
appears to still carry real heat. To be cliche about
it, there is unfinished business between the two. If
the UFC does have to go the route of putting this
rematch on, I suspect the promotion won’t be as
labored as some fans fear.

Fight Club members get first crack at UFC tickets

The first blocks of tickets for UFC 129 go on sale
Thursday morning, and if you’re hoping to secure a seat
at Rogers Centre April 30 you should do two things.
First, join the UFC’s Fight Club, where a $74.99 (U.S.)
annual fee gives you a chance to buy up to eight tickets
before they go on sale to the general public. Non-
members must wait until Saturday morning to buy
tickets.
Then you need to act fast.
To ensure the general public will still have seats to buy
on Saturday the UFC will cap initial ticket sales to Fight
Club members. With the most heavily hyped event
in the UFC’s history approaching and nearly 20,000
people enrolled in the Fight Club, the UFC could easily
sell all 40,000 seats without even opening sales to the
general public.
Hence the cap on pre-sales. Tom Wright, the UFC’s
director of Canadian operations, says that even for $75

It just gives you a better place in line — as long as you
line up early.
“I could say I wish they all went to Fight Club members
because my goal is obviously to sell (the event) out,”
Wright said. “But my real goal is to make sure it’s
accessible to as many fans as possible. We will not allow
the fight to be sold out just to Fight Club members.”
Wright wouldn’t specify Thursday’s sales limits but
affirmed that tickets still available Saturday morning
will number “in the thousands.”
But they still may total a small percentage of the
available remaining seats.
Three years ago the UFC staged its first show in
Montreal and broke existing records for attendance
(21,390) and fastest sellout (five minutes). But the
record for quickest sellout only counted the tickets that
remained after the UFC sold roughly 20,000 seats to
Fight Club members.
Ticket prices range from $50 in the Rogers Centre’s
upper levels to $800 for seats closer to ringside, and
organizers expect all of them to sell quickly.
When that happens Wright says the UFC and Rogers
Centre are prepared to add more seats, which will be
made available on a first-come, first-served basis.

wins during nearly a half–decade of unrivaled
perfection in the UFC octagon, Anderson Silva
still came up with another spectacular way to
finish a fight.
Silva stopped Vitor Belfort with a single kick
to the face in the first round, defending his
middleweight belt for a record eighth time at
UFC 126 on Saturday night.
After little action in the opening minutes of their
bout, Silva (28–4) flattened his fellow Brazilian
brawler with one magnificently placed kick that

Always remain 10 steps away from the
bus to be out of the “Danger Zone” and
where the driver can see you. Always
cross the street in front of the bus. Never
go behind the bus.
To be safe when they travel to and from
school, follow these simple safety rules:
AT THE BUS STOP:
•Always walk to the bus stop. Never
run.
•Walk on the sidewalk. If there is no
sidewalk, walk on the left facing traffic.
•Always go to the bus stop about five

•While at the bus stop, wait in a safe
place away from the road. Do not run

Cilantro is an herb that is commonly

of the cilantro plant are also used to
season food, and are called coriander.
Growing your own cilantro can be a
bit tricky, but with attention and care
you’ll be harvesting this wonderful
herb and using it in your own cuisine.
Let’s get started!
Cilantro plants grow and go to seed
very quickly, so you’ll want to plant
them continuously throughout the
growing season; every three weeks
or so to maintain your crop. Once the
roots consistently reach 75 degrees, the
plant will start to seed.
Plant the seeds a few inches apart in an
area of your garden that gets both sun
and shade - preferably morning sun and
afternoon shade. Planting them close
together will give your cilantro plants
a bit of extra shade to keep the roots

Chest x-ray
This shows abnormalities in the size or
shape of the heart, and whether fluid
is building up in the lungs because
the heart isn’t working efficiently as a
pump.
Coronary angiogram
•This is often used to assess whether
people with angina require surgery.

disease of the aorta - the largest artery
in the body and involves little potential
risk to patients. In stroke patients, it
gives valuable information about the
location and extent of brain injury.
Doppler studies and
echocardiography
Blood samples taken over a series of
days can reveal the level of enzymes
- proteins that help with chemical
actions in the body and are released
after a heart attack - in the blood.
Echocardiogram
This scan uses sound waves to create
an image of the heart as it beats. It
shows the structure of the heart, how
the walls of the heart move, and how
well the heart valves are working.

Echocardiography
A pulse of high frequency, inaudible
sound is transmitted through the skin
by placing a recorder or probe on the
chest wall. The probe picks up the
echoes reflected from various parts
of the heart and displays them as an
echocardiogram - a picture on a screen.
The recorded waves show the shape,
texture and movement of the valves
and the size and function of the heart
muscle and chambers. The test can take
up to an hour and is painless. It provides
information about disease of the heart
muscle for those who have suffered a
heart attack or heart failure and to assess
people with disease of the heart valves.
Exercise stress test (or treadmill test)
This monitors the heart during exercise
and shows how well it responds when
the demands on it are increased. It’s a
good way to detect blockages in the
blood flow through the coronary arteries
to the muscle of the heart (coronary
artery disease).
Holter monitoring
Also known as 24-hour ECG, involves
electrocardiogram recordings taken
over 24 hours and can help diagnose
palpitations, which occur infrequently
and can easily be missed in a short
test. The electrodes are placed on the
chest and attached with wires to a small
portable tape recorder which is worn on
a belt around the waist. The recorder -
the Holter monitor - takes constant or
intermittent readings.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI
scan)
Produces detailed pictures of internal
organs, including the heart and brain.
Patients lie in a short tunnel-like
machine which contains a cylindrical
magnet. Short bursts of magnetic fields
and radio waves create images of parts
of the body as required.
MRI can measure the flow of blood
through some of the major arteries and
can detect abnormal heart function
in disorders such as cardiomyopathy
(heart muscle disease), coronary heart
disease, and congenital heart defects
and help define the location and extent
of brain injury in stroke patients.
Nuclear imaging
A very small and harmless quantity
of radioactive substance, called an
isotope, is injected into the blood, often
while exercising. Gamma rays emitted
by the isotope - usually technetium or
thallium - are picked up by a “camera”
positioned close to the chest and tests
the size and pumping function of the
heart chambers, taking pictures of the
inside of the heart as it empties and fills.
Blood flow to the heart muscleis also
studied, taking pictures of the flow of
blood to the muscular walls of the heart.

Australia MPs weep for
victims of natural disasters
Australian PM Julia Gillard: “What it means
to be Australian”
Australia’s prime minister and other MPs
wept as they paid tribute to the thousands
of people whose lives have been rocked by
natural disasters.
Julia Gillard struggled to hold back tears
while speaking of the 35 killed in last
month’s floods in Queensland.
Powerful Cyclone Yasi compounded the
misery of Queenslanders, and wildfires are
still burning in Western Australia.
She said Australia “watched in horror
as day after day a new chapter in natural
disaster history was written”.
At the first parliament opening for 2011,
Ms Gillard said the past few months
would be “remembered for the force and
scale of the natural disasters the nation has
endured”.
She wept as she presented a flag to
parliament given to her by rescue workers
in Queensland, who had found it at the
scene of deadly flash floods described as
“an inland tsunami”.
Landlords profiteering in
cyclone-ravaged Tully
Residents in the cyclone-devastated town
of Tully in far north Queensland are angry
that landlords are trying to raise rents and
exploit the reduced availability of homes.
Authorities say up to 40 per cent of the
houses damaged by Cyclone Yasi will have
to be demolished.
Residents and even a real estate agent
are complaining about profiteering by
landlords.
Many residents, including Marge
Youngman, are busily salvaging what they
can and piling their destroyed belongings
on the roadside.
“A bunch of rubble... you never replace
what you’ve lost. Even though we have got
insurance, you never replace it. It’s hard to
salvage,” she said.
Ms Youngman’s rented home is one of
hundreds that is barely standing. A few wet
discolored photos are laid carefully on the
grass to dry, but nearby the pile of ruined
belongings is two meters high.

“It spoke to them of courage; the courage
it takes to keep filling sandbags even when
your back is breaking, the courage it takes
to hold your nerve in the dark as a cyclone
races around you,” she said.
As she recounted the story of 13-year-old
Jordan Rice, who urged rescuers to save
his younger brother first as he was swept to
his death, many MPs were reduced to tears.
She also told of a pregnant woman whose
child was torn from her arms and drowned,
just seconds before help arrived.
“We will always remember the days of
despair and the days of courage we’ve
lived through together this summer,” she
said.
Evacuation centers
Across Queensland, 35 people have been
reported dead in flood-related incidents
since December. Several people remain
missing in the Lockyer Valley.
About 26,000 Brisbane homes have been
hit by either major or partial flooding. In
nearby Ipswich, 3,000 homes were flooded.
Nearly a week after Cyclone Yasi battered
Queensland coastal communities, the army
is cutting its way through mountains of
debris to reach townships and farms that
remain isolated.
In suburbs of Western Australia’s state
capital, Perth, fierce bushfires which started
at the weekend have razed more than 70
properties and damaged dozens more.
After 17 years in the place Ms Youngman
and her husband have to find a new
home, but she says they may not be able
to afford it.
“I’m not going to pay big rents -
everyone’s bumped rent up. I think it’s
very disgusting,” she said.
“People have not got jobs and I think
that’s the worst thing, because after
Cyclone Larry they did exactly the same
in the Tully area and everywhere else.”
Ms Youngman says rents are rising by
around 50 per cent in some cases.
“Up the road was $180. I think he told
his guys $250; so some could be $300
to $350. The young guy my husband
had here working with him said ‘I can’t
afford that, I’m going to have to go’.”
Similar stories of cyclone profiteering
are being told around Tully. One man
told PM that landlords are telling renters
they are welcome to vacate as soon as
they like ahead of likely rent hikes.
At the moment it seems most of the
people whose homes were damaged are
staying with family and friends, as there
are only about 30 people staying in the
Red Cross shelters in Tully.
The Government and charities are
working on a plan to help house people,
but with about 400 homes unsalvageable,
hundreds of families will need
accommodation.
Grim find as missing
businessman Allan Noor’s
body found in freezer
A SYDNEY businessman’s frozen
body was found dumped in a
freezer chest, a week after he
disappeared from his tire shop.
Police confirmed that they made the
gruesome discovery last month.
Allan Noor’s body was hidden
inside a commercial freezer in the
basement of an apartment block in
Sydney’s south.
Mr Noor, 49, was last seen on
December 31 at the Payless Tyres
store he owned and operated at
Chatswood in Sydney’s north.
The father-of-three was reported
missing to police on New Year’s
Day after he failed to turn up to a
party the night before.
A week later, police found Mr
Noor’s frozen body, which showed
no signs of violence or injury,
beneath a unit block in Carlton.
Police appealed to the public for
information which may help them
track down his killer.
Senior police defended their
decision not to release details of
Mr Noor’s gruesome death earlier,

It is understood the entire freezer
chest, with Mr Noor’s intact body,
was taken to Glebe Morgue for a
post-mortem examination. No cause
of death has been established.
Strike Force Kenton, which
comprises detectives from the state
crime command’s homicide squad
as well as St George, Dee Why and
Chatswood police, was established
to investigate the circumstances
surrounding Mr Noor’s death.
Detectives believe Mr Noor may
have been kidnapped from his work,
or at least incapacitated, after they
discovered the business unlocked
and unsecured.
“Obviously we are treating this
as a murder, yes, and it is out of
character for the business to be left
unsecured,” a police spokesman
said.
Police are keen to speak to anyone
who may have seen Mr Noor in
the vicinity of his tire shop on the
Pacific Highway, or near the unit
block in Hampton Court Rd at
Carlton, between December 31 and
January 7.
His green Volvo sedan was last seen
leaving the business on December
31.
The car was later found abandoned
and parked on the corner of
Buchanan St and Hampton Court
Rd at Carlton on January 3.
The car has since been seized for
forensic analysis.
“Police are appealing to anyone who
has any information about the green
Volvo or who may have seen any
activity around the vehicle in and
around the Carlton area between
December 31, 2010, and January 3,
2011,” police said in a statement.
A fire which has destroyed more than 60
homes in the Perth Hills has been brought
under control, but authorities say the blaze
is still not considered safe.
The fire in the bush-fringed Perth suburbs
of Kelmscott and Roleystone, south-east
of Perth, has destroyed 64 houses and
damaged 32 others.
Emergency services were surprised by
the fire, which started about midday last
Sunday, 40 kilometres south-east of the
Perth CBD.

completed by Sept. 30
BC Place officials have announced
revitalization work on the stadium is
scheduled to be completed by Sept. 30.
The massive $565-million renovation
includes the installation of the largest
cable-supported retractable roof of its kind
in the world. The stadium’s seats are also
being replaced with wider versions.
Work to install the 36 masts and
compression beams that make up the steel
superstructure of the new retractable roof
at BC Place is now complete. The cable-
net system to support the new fabric roof is
now being installed.
Public assistance still needed
in postal carrier robbery
Surrey RCMP are re-appealing for public
assistance in locating the person/persons
responsible for an unprovoked assault and
robbery of a postal worker that occurred over
7 weeks ago.
On Wednesday, December 15th at
approximately 11:30am, a 44 year old postal
carrier from Canada Post was assaulted in the
area of 132nd Street and 105th Avenue. The
carrier was transported to hospital with non-

A minor earthquake measuring 3.2 on the
Richter scale was felt in Victoria Tuesday
morning.
The United States Geological Service
pinpointed the epicentre within 8 km of
Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands region
of Washington State, about 23 km south of
Victoria on the southern tip of Vancouver
Island.
The tremor was almost 51 km deep but the
West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning
Centre said it was too small to issue a tsunami
alert.
Twitter and other social networks briefly lit
up after 8:36 a.m. PT with B.C. residents
reporting they’d felt the tremor.

painkillers recalled
A company that makes over-the-
counter drugs is voluntarily recalling
selected lots of six health products
sold as store brands by various
retailers.
Health Canada says the recall is the
result of an inspection at the Pharmetics
manufacturing plant in Laval, Que.,
where deficiencies were detected on
the production line.
It says there was possible contamination
between the product lines, and some
products were labelled with the wrong
expiry dates.
The recall covers specific lots of:
•acetaminophen 500-milligram extra
strength tablets sold by Shoppers and
Loblaws
•acetaminophen, caffeine & eight-
milligram codeine phosphate tablets
