Task Description
Students will plan, storyboard and edit a short film inspired by the Soviet Montage Theory. This task
requires you prepare and present, in groups, a film using ONE of Sergei Eisenstein’s Methods of
Montage. The film must address the key concepts previously studied in class, in particular the use of
pacing and montage editing techniques. Students will be marked individually based on their
contribution to the task. The grade is a culmination of their involvement throughout the entire
production process from planning to shooting, editing and reflecting.

Criterion B : Application (Maximum 10)

Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to apply the knowledge and understanding of the concepts previously studied in class.
Assessment will be based on how well their chase scene demonstrates :
- Application of the understanding of Eisenstein’s Methods of Montage;
- Application of the appropriate use of montage editing techniques;
- Thorough and effective planning and pre-production skills;
- Thorough and effective time management;
- Creativity and resourcefulness in shooting and editing;
An ability to work well alone and as part of a team in the role of either: Writer, Cameraperson, Sound Director or Editor

- The student plays a superficial role in the task.
- The student understands Eisenstein’s Methods of Montage but has difficulty applying this, even
3-4 with support;
- The student understands the meaning of montage editing but has difficulty applying the
techniques, even with support;
- The student shows ineffective planning and time management;
- The student shows ineffective attempts to solve problems creatively;
- The student plays a minor role in the task.
- The student shows a good understanding of how Eisenstein’s Methods of Montage works and can
5-6 apply this;
- The student understands how to montage edit and can apply the different techniques effectively in
obvious situations
- The student shows moderate planning and time management;
- The student shows moderate attempt to solve problems creatively;
The student plays an active role in the task.
- The student shows a thorough understanding of how Eisenstein’s Methods of Montage works
7-8 and can apply this consistently and effectively
- The student understands how to montage edit their film and can apply the different techniques
effectively in a variety of situations;
