How to Prepare for the Final Portfolio

(Due on January 21, 2011)

I- What is your portfolio?

Your portfolio is a folder/binder that contains a reflective journal in which you assess your
own progress throughout the course, and a selection of the multiple drafts of the papers
you think they reflect your improvement during the semester.

II- How do you prepare your portfolio?

You review the list of objectives and learning outcomes designed for English 203 course
(check course syllabus on moodle for this purpose).

You select the papers you think you have worked hard on and they reflect your acquisition of
these objectives. They could be the free writings, the reading responses and /or the essays.

You review these papers and highlight what exactly you have achieved in each. You have the
opportunity to improve any paper (especially the reading responses and essays) if you feel
you have learnt something important from the feedback given on it.

You write a reflective journal whereby you assess your progress and state where exactly you
feel your strengths are and what you think you still need to work more on.

You refer to your own papers for evidence - e.g. I am now able to phrase an argument and
support it with credible evidence from a reliable source (see Draft 2 of essay 1 paragraph 5).

Your reflective journal would be a 2-3 page paper that starts with an introduction that
prepares your reader for the content, has a number of body paragraphs where you detail your
progress with evidence, and ends with a conclusion that reflects your impression on the work
you have done.

III- How do you organize your portfolio?

Prepare a table of contents whereby you list the papers you are including in the folder in
order.
Set a title page as the first paper in the folder before the table of contents.

Place the reflective journal as the first paper following the table of contents, and place the
rest of your papers in the order you have referenced them in your reflective journal and in the
table of contents.

IV-How is the portfolio assessed?

Your portfolio is reviewed based on the reflective journal you produce.

The new drafts of the papers are also reassessed and graded.

The quality and organization of the portfolio will comprise part of the overall grade on the
course.

The grades would be distributed as follows:

Reading Responses (10%)

Free Writings and class participation (10%)
Essay I Draft and Final Draft (15%)
Essay II Draft and Final Draft (20%)
Test 1 (10%)
Test 2 (15%)
Project (10%)
Portfolio (10%)
