Mobile Marketing Stats and Trends - If Your Business isn't Mobile

Optimized, You're Obsolete.

By 2012, an estimated 10 trillion text messages will be sent and delivered globally, once
again hammering home the fact that the future of mobile marketing is bright. Without
question, the ultimate consumer device is the cell phone - everyone's got one, and as
technology grows, everyone's always on the lookout to upgrade their cell phones and
service plans. Consider the following:

• 250+ million Americans carry mobile phones (that's over 80% of the population
and that phone is NEVER more than 3 feet away from them!)

• Cell phone subscriptions will top 5 BILLION globally in 2011.

• The mobile marketing and advertising market is currently valued at over $16
billion dollars.

• More than 160 million people in the U.S. are on a text plan with the average age
of the texter being 38.

• In January alone, more than 27 million people accessed a social networking site
from their mobile phone and a third of young adults are regularly accessing
Facebook and Twitter from their mobile phones

• Jupiter Research reports that revenues from mobile applications will top $25
billion by 2014.

• Last year, over 285 million wireless connections were recorded, a year-over-year
increase of 15 million. Further breakdown of those stats reveal:

- 1.12 trillion voice minutes were used, up 38 billion year-over-year

- 6.1 billion voice minutes were used per day
- almost 5 billion text message were sent per day
- More than 1.5 trillion text messages were sent or received

• There are 54.5 million mobile Internet users on a regular basis. Add to that the
fact that more than 172 million phones are capable of browsing the Web and it's
easy to see the value mobile marketing can bring to a brand.

These stats should surprise no one to learn that SMS text message marketing
and mobile marketing gives brands the greatest reach and taps into the behaviors

and interests of hundreds of millions of potential customers with the best brand
loyalty tool ever devised. All studies and trends are showing that the growth in
wireless and mobile marketing is continuing at an astonishing rate - a wave that
marketers certainly do not want to miss.

Wireless carriers are also obviously a big winner with mobile marketing. Wireless
service revenue for the second half of 2010 was almost $77 billion, up from $75 billion.
The big revenue increase came from wireless data services which were more than $22
billion during the last months of 2010. That’s an incredible 25.7% increase from the
previous year’s period. The significance of wireless data revenue has grown to
encompass 28% of all wireless service revenues.

In other words, more and more people are accessing the internet from their wireless
devices. In fact, with mobile phones worldwide reaching 4.6 billion (and expecting
to increase incrementally as well), the mobile marketing industry is actually
almost 5 times as large as the entire internet!

The trends definitely show web access by people on the move, including through
laptops and smart mobile devices, which will surpass web access from desktop
computers within the next five years. And as more and more super-powered phones hit
the market, the one thing they all have in common is the heavy use of the mobile web.
Case in point:

• The iPhone is still the top smartphone worldwide and has a proven track record
of success - Among the devices making the heaviest use of the mobile web are
the iPhone and its non-smartphone counterpart, the iPod Touch. The data traffic
created by these two handhelds has increased 19 times from September 2008 to
this past month and now accounts for 43% of all smartphone requests worldwide.
In the U.S., that percentage is even slightly higher, with iPhone traffic accounting
for nearly half (48%) of all smartphone requests.

• But the Android market is rising quickly - and trends show it will quickly surpass
that of Apple probably before I finish this article. The growth rate of Android has
been absolutely amazing and dramatically increasing. Also, Google's mobile OS
is already beating out competitors like RIM, the maker of Blackberry devices, and
Windows Mobile. What that translates to for mobile marketers and application
developers is that you can't just focus on the iPhone, because you'll be missing a
hugely growing market.

• Perhaps one of the greatest parts of mobile marketing is something people

somehow take lightly: mobile is worldwide. What other market can you

realistically market to very inexpensively when your customers may be in China,
India, Europe, etc.?

You can summarize everything in this article in one sentence: "Smart phones are taking
over". The mobile web is growing leaps and bounds and nothing is poised to stop it. As
smart phones continue their staggering path of growth, your customers are browsing the
mobile web over the "traditional" internet and downloading mobile applications that fit
their needs... everyday... constantly...

Apple's iTunes store recently celebrated their 10 billionth download. with 3.5 million
apps downloaded daily. How would you like just a small piece of that? Could it be more
obvious that it's time to take your business mobile? Could all these stats and trends
point to something that's just a fad that'll go away soon? Of course not! We cannot
stress the following takeaway points strongly enough if you want your business to stay
relevant in 2011 and beyond:

1. Get your current website mobile optimized , including the creation of mobile
optimized landing pages and squeeze pages.

2. Have an mobile application developed for your business and use it to create
customer loyalty program to increase your brand awareness.

3. Begin a mobile permission-based SMS text message marketing campaign (for

just $24.95/month) and start developing a subscriber list of potential customers
that love your brand are just waiting for a mobile coupon offer to buy something
from you.

4. Implement a QR Code so users can scan a graphic and get your content
delivered to their cell phones on a location-based basis.

And guess what? After all those stats, we still maintain that the mobile marketing
industry is still in its infancy! That's right - there's still time! But, you really need
to get on board with the above takeaways TODAY to stay ahead of your
competition. These stats and trends can't hit you in the face hard enough. Do it, or go
the way of the 8-track tape.
