cooking pot

Before you begin, study the thing you want to copy. If you're copying
professional quality models, they usually have the most efficient
use of polys.

1. spacebar/add/mesh/circle vertices 8
2. go TABKEY edit mode select the outer edges and EKEY extrude in ZKEY
vertical.

3. select the extruded edges, get a NUMPAD 7key top view and get your
cursor over the center of the circle. SKEY and SHIFT Z to restrict the
scale to x and y,

scale out (this is the 1st time this actually worked, it always only went in x or y before) hold down shift to control the size better

4. TAB object mode and SHIFT-D duplicate this, it's a nice frying pan.
5. tab back to edit mode ekey zkeyez the next 2 rings of polys, and
scale to suit.

OTHER METHOD- solidify, makes many more faces than necessary in

this case-select all faces, go mesh/scripts (it's at the very top, some times
I can't see it) solidify selection, 'skin' the default is -.1 but
I put -.02 for a real skinny one.

END OTHER METHOD

7. select all faces get a side view get a face NOT edge or vertex selection AKEY all select, UKEY cylinder from view,

this will be changed later, with selections 'project from view' or smart unwrap.Actually the 2nd time (I had to start over) cubic projection
worked better than cylinder.
tip: 2 monitors with the model you're copying in the other monitor,
a good viewer is Deep Exploration, after the trial is over it still
displays models.

select the top edge loop with 'select/edges/edge loop, and EKEY ZKEY
this time DOWN

to make the bowl interior and the soup surface.

next go vertex mode and make the soup surface with 3 verts counter
clockwise and FKEY

'the next bit'

The handle, add mesh cube, move and scale the sticking out parts,
just 1 side we'll mirror it later. make sure you have the 3d cursor
selected as your pivot point for scaling and moving.

Next for the triangular sticking out thing, in object mode add
plane (no idea if this is the easy way, there's no 'add triangle')
TABKEY to edit, mesh/faces/convert quads to triangles,

now you
have 2 triangles, delete 1 shift-d duplicate it, select the copy and PKEY separate it into an object, then move the other where it should go and
extrude. before I could extrude, though I had to rem doubles, I
guess a plane is 2-sided. It removed 6, a lot for 1 triangle!

Now extrude in x
Now the handle, for the other triangle I unchecked double sided and
rem doubles removed 0

Line up your triangle and extrude ekey in zkey, move each top
face in x, the second time rotate the face in y

make sure your

3d cursor is positioned right. now in object mode select the
handle, hold down shift and select the little knob sticking out and
CTRL-J join selected meshes.

Do it again for the other part of the handle.

Next select all handle faces in edit mode and move them so the
pink dot, pivot point? of object is at the end of the handle where
we want it mirrored,

go back to object mode and move it back into

place on the pot.

select all in edit mode and in f9 buttons window 'add modifier'

'mirror'

on the Y axis 'do clipping' which merges vertices on

the mirror line, go tabkey object mode and 'apply' if the mirrored
half disappears.

Now join the pot to the handle, select all faces and
ukey smart unwrap. Note-I asked for Y, but X might be the right one.

in f9 buttons menu change name to pot.

What we end up with is a close copy of a copyrighted model, but it could be scaled and tweaked to make it 'original', Anyhoo,
the idea is to learn how these things are made.
