PROJECTS
Under Graduate - Conceptual development of Autonomous Navigation Robot for Planetary Exploration.
Level
In this project we studied various Autonomous navigation robots being developed at major
research universities and learned about the techniques they are using for the navigation and
control. After the literature survey we started working over the mechanical design aspects of the
Robotic vehicle and Neural Networks based navigation and autonomous functioning of the
vehicle.
The project was carried out to develop a neural network based model that will be trained initially
to learn the best driving performance of the instructor and later on as a Instructor to monitor the
online performance of learners without the actual presence of the Instructor. The project made it
feasible to learn the best of the driving skills from the best performer irrespective of the
geographical domains of the learner. A brief part of the paper was published in the proceedings
of International Conference on Systemic, Cybernetics and Informatics, Hyderabad- (feb11-15,
2004).
The project was funded by the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Govt.
of India). The aim of the project was to solve the problem of image segmentation of objects from
the complex scenes (like Satellite images of the vegetation) as because of the variation in the
intensity of the pixels belonging to the same object and geometric nature of the object makes it
difficult to apply general deterministic algorithms for the segmentation. As such, Markov
Random Field models were used for the problem. I was involved in implementing the Tree
structure MRF model. Various optimization techniques like SA (Simulated Annealing) and GA
(Genetic Algorithms) were also applied.
This work was the part of my research internship at ETH Zurich. The aim of the project was to
detect the Dissection Membrane in Aorta using the CT images. The work required thorough
research survey and development of the non-linear line detector. Since most of the line detectors
are basically edge detector, line with a thickness is usually recognized as two different edges.
The non linear filter developed could detect the presence of the single line with a given thickness
without being affected by the isolated edges. The detector was used to detect the dissection
membrane which follows variable thickness in the CT images.
The aim of the research was to develop an optimum Group Technology model based on particle
swarm optimization and compare the model results with existing GA (Genetic Algorithm) based
models. A Comprehensive study of existing GA and SA (Simulated Annealing) technique in GT
was undertaken. A new mapping technique was developed and implemented for the cell
formation problem in Group Technology. A hybrid model based on combined GA and PSO was
also proposed.

PROJECTS Is Voice over IP Safe
Graduate Level
This project was aimed at verifying if a machine learning model can break into the encryption of
the VoIP conversation using the components of the communication that are unaffected by the
encryption. In the project, it was verified if the in between silences and voice suppressions to
estimate the words used for the communication can be used to break the encryption. A Bayesian
classifier was developed to identify the simple voice from the pattern of the packet timings. This
method was further augmented using the Hidden Markov Models (HMM) to frame a comparison.
This project was carried out to verify the perceptual thresholds of the human beings while
working on the sketch application. A simple set of tasks were developed to be sketched by the
users and their perceptual thresholds for perpendicularity and closeness were determined using
the various classifiers.
This project is being funded by National Endowment for Humanities and is aimed at developing
computer vision based technique to monitor the chromaticity condition of the architectural
heritages. Since the color of an object is affected by the shadows, it is very important to get the
actual nature of the surface with the color information to distinguish natural shades of color from
the varying color shades due to shadows. In this project, we are using the high dynamic range
imaging techniques clubbed with the other machine learning and image processing techniques to
identify and remove shadow and hence obtain the color information.
Most of the time, we use conventional paper and pen to explain the design concept, or draw a
map, or just scribble some design on paper. However, at latter stage, we would like to use the
drawn concept to be modeled using the CAD tools or just would like to digitalize the concept to
be manipulated through computer. This project is aimed at extracting the sketch information
from the images and using the information to be incorporated in the sketch recognition system,
LADDER, for manipulation and as input to advance CAD system.
It has been observed that contextual information along with the perceptual information can affect
the thresholds for recognition of objects in sketch recognition. In this project, we are trying to
find these thresholds in various contexts and then utilize these thresholds in the sketch
recognition system LADDER developed at CSAIL MIT.
