This section serves to provide the users with the skills required to complete assignments that

involve the integration of the productivity tools: Word, Excel® and Access®. As prerequisites,
the users are expected to complete the sections on Word, Excel® and Access®. These sections
form the foundation for the integration section.

LESSON 1: WORKING IN ACCESS® – INTEGRATING DATA FROM EXCEL®

 Create the following spreadsheet in Excel® and Save it As Claimant.

 Close the spreadsheet and Exit Excel®.

 Create a database named NMI CLAIMS.

 Create a table named CLAIM with the following structure:

Field Name Data Type Size


Claim # Number Long Integer
Claimant Id# Text 8
Claimed Amount Currency
Awarded Amount Currency

 Set Claim # as the primary key.

Importing an Excel® Worksheet into Access®

 With the database NMI CLAIMS open, click Excel in the Import group on the
External Data tab.

The Get External Data – Excel Spreadsheet dialog box pops up.

 Select Import the source data into a new table in the current database.

 Click Browse… to select the Excel® file to import.

 Select the Excel® file Claimant and then click Open.

 Click OK on the Get External Data – Excel Spreadsheet dialog box.

The Import Spreadsheet Wizard pops up.

 Ensure that Show Worksheets – Sheet1 is selected in the Import Spreadsheet Wizard
and then click Next >.

 Check the First Row Contains Column Headings check box and then click Next >.

 Click Next > again since there is no need to modify the fields.

 Select the Choose my own primary key radio button and then click Next >.

 Type CLAIMANT in the Import to Table: text box and then click Finish.

 Click Close on the Get External Data – Excel Spreadsheet dialog box.

The Excel® table is now an Access® table.

 Select the Design View and ensure that the table structure is as follows:
