Q1 (a) (i) Briefly explain about the power electronics.

(b) Briefly describe the conditions for a thyristor to conduct and the way to
turn off with the aid of suitable diagram or circuit.

(c) (i) List all the design considerations on power semiconductor switches.
(ii) Sketch the turn-on and turn-off switching waveform of gate current,
Ig, anode to cathode voltage, VAK, and anode current, IA of a Gate
Turn-off Thyristor (GTO).

Q2 (a) Draw completely the waveforms of vs, io, vo, ig1, and ig2 for the circuit
shown in Figure Q2(a). The firing angle  of the rectifier circuit is 45o and
the output current is in continuous mode (CCM).

(b) Prove that the power factor, pf for a single-phase full-wave controlled
rectifier with resistive load is

(c) A controlled single-phase full-wave rectifier has a resistive load of R with


the average output power of 2 kW. The rectifier is connected to a 240 V,
50 Hz AC source through an isolation transformer with a turns ratio of

(i) Find the value of the resistive load, R.


(ii) Find the firing angle,  for the rectifier.

Q3 (a) A 120 V battery need to be charged from 600 V DC source using a DC


chopper. The average battery current should be 20 A, with a peak-to-peak
ripple of 2 A. The DC chopper circuit and the desired battery current
waveform are shown in Figure Q3(a). If the chopper frequency is 200 Hz,
calculate the following:

(i) Find the DC current drawn from the source.


(ii) Find the DC current flowing through the diode.
(iii) Draw the current waveform in Q3(a)(i) and (ii).
(iv) Find the duty cycle and turn ON times.
(v) Find the inductance of the inductor.

(b) A boost converter circuit as shown in Figure Q3(b) has an input of 5 V and
an output of 20 W at 15 V. The minimum inductor current must be no less
than 50% of the average value. The output voltage ripple must be less than
1%. The switching frequency is 30 kHz.

(i) Obtain the expression of the output voltage using volt-second balance
technique.
(ii) Find the duty ratio of the converter.
(iii) Find the minimum inductor value.
(iv) Find the minimum capacitor value.
(v) Based on the calculation in Q3(b)(iii), give your conclusion.

Q4 (a) (i) Briefly discuss about the Total Harmonics Distortion (THD) of an
inverter.
(ii) Draw the square-wave waveform with fundamental sine wave
component, third harmonic and fifth harmonic.

(b) A full-bridge inverter has an RLC load with R = 5 Ω, L = 10 mH, and C =


26 F. The inverter frequency, fo = 400 Hz and the input DC voltage, Vs =
220 V.

(i) Express the instantaneous load current as a Fourier series.


(ii) Find the rms load current at the fundamental frequency, Io1,
(iii) Find the THD of the load current,
(iv) Find the power absorbed by the resistance load, and
(v) Find the peak current of each transistor.

Q5 (a) (i) State the advantages and disadvantages of the on-off control AC
voltage controller.
(ii) Briefly discuss the principle of Phase Control AC voltage controller
with the aid of the converter circuit and its waveform.

(b) A single-phase half-wave AC voltage controller as shown in Figure Q5(b)


has a resistive load of R = 5  and the input voltage is Vs = 120 V (rms),
60 Hz. The delay angle of thyristor T1 is  = /3. Determine

(i) The rms output voltage Vo,


(ii) The input power factor PF, and
(iii) The average input current.

Q6 (a) (i) A well known power electronics application is High Voltage Direct
Current (HVDC) system. Briefly discuss the main purpose for the
application of HVDC schemes.

(ii) Sketch the basic block diagram of the main equipment for HVDC
converter station with monopolar operation.

(b) (i) Briefly explain the phrase Flexible AC Transmission System


(FACTS).
(ii) The per phase AC transmission line model and it phasor diagram is
depicted in Figure Q6(c).  is the phase angle between sending end
voltage, Vs and receiving end voltage, Vr. For a lossless line, prove
that the active and reactive power of the line is given by
