A. INTRODUCTION

Living Skills for Primary Schools (KHSR) is a subject taught at Level ll in


the Integrated Curriculum for Primary School (KBSR). This subject is
formulated to instill technology awareness through the mastery of practical
skills and knowledge while cultivating positive attitude based upon
technology and entrepreneurship.

Formation of a technology and entrepreneurship oriented society is in


consistent with the aspiration of the country and suitable with current
technological and entrepreneurship development. Therefore, efforts made
through education will enable society to be aware of technological
development and be able to cope with the challenges. As an initial step to
produce a society inclined towards these, practical skills based on design,
technology and entrepreneurship are exposed to pupils through this
subject.

In this subject, the main focus is to master the skills of Design and
Technology as well as Business and Entrepreneurship. The skills in Design
and Technology as well as Business and Entrepreneurship enable pupils to
come out with creative, innovative and inventive ideas. Pupils carry out
activities like recognizing basic shapes, designing, understanding product
function and initiating projects using range of materials like wood, metal,
recycled materials and introduction to electric and electronic components.
In addition, pupils could do basic maintenance and repair of equipment,
tools and furniture. Pupils are also trained to sew, alter clothing, planting
and caring of ornamental plants, keep pet fish and plant vegetables. The
Business and Entrepreneurship field stresses upon the entrepreneurship
elements in business transactions. This activity provides chance to pupils
to practice smart consumer attitude.

From the aspect of individual development, KHSR helps to fulfill pupils’


natural instinct and the curiosity to try equipment, tools and machines that
exist all around them. This provides opportunity for pupils to try, invent,
modify, operate and examine the various technological products that suit
their intellectual development. Pupils have also the chance to carry out
transactions.

Through this subject also, positive attitude among pupils could be nurtured.
Through the activities carried out, pupils have the chance to practice good
work culture like giving priority to safety, systematic, cooperative,
responsible and disciplined working style. Apart from that, KHSR also gives
space for pupils to expand imagination and creativity besides exposing and
encouraging them towards entrepreneurship. This subject also creates
awareness for pupil the necessity to look after environment and
appreciation for work in the field of engineering, design and business.

All of these would contribute to the desire in producing a balanced and


harmonious society as enshrined in the National Education Philosophy.

B. AIM

The aim of Living Skills for Primary School subject is to enable pupils to
acquire basic skills and knowledge based on technology and
entrepreneurship so that they can carry out do-it-yourself work, to invent
and have tendency towards doing business as well as implementing good
attitude and work culture.

C. OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this subject are to enable pupils to:
1. Know and practice security measures at work place.
2. Choose the right equipment and tools and use them with the right
technique.
3. Design basic form in the 2D and 3D format.
4. Understand function and external form of a product.
5. Assemble the construction set model and analyze component.
6. Design and produce simple products from various recycled
materials.
7. Identify electric and electronic components.
8. Maintain and repair minor damages to equipment, tools, furniture
and part of building.
9. Alter clothing and produce stitched articles.
10. Produce and care for ornamental plants, keep pet fish and plant
vegetables.
11. Plan and manage systematic sale and practice business ethics.
12. Manage work, money and effective expenditure.
13. Practice smart and responsible consumer attitude.
14. Have interest in business.
15. Expand creative and innovative efforts.
16. Practice good attitude and work culture.

The subject content is composed based on two area of study i.e.


Design and Technology, and Business and Entrepreneurship. Field of
study comprises several learning unit containing topics based on skills and
knowledge. The description of field of study and list of learning units are
listed below:

1. Design Form and Technology

This area of study aims to enable pupil to design and produce product
based upon to ideas creative. Creative mind formation carried out through
activity spot basis forms, design, understand function and product design
follow his suitability. Knowledge of technology, building material and
component electricity and electronic also is molded supply steady and form
mind creative and innovative. Pupil also doing things maintain and repair
little damage to easy equipment and machine by carry out work do-it-
yourself. Pupil also be exposed into practice ornamental plant cultivation
and vegetable and ornamental fish care. Pupil give way repair clothing and

management also absorbed during doing things this.

This area of study aims to foster pupil interest and awareness in


business and entrepreneurship through trade activity. The skill learning

venture.
