Te Matatini O Te Ra
In the world of kapa haka the Te Matatini National Festival
reigns supreme! It’s the place where haka groups from
around Aotearoa and Australia congregate to see who will
wear the title of the Māori world’s top group for the next
two years. This biennial event is a must on the Māori
social calendar and mixes competition with tradition.
This year 42 haka groups representing 13 regions including
Australia, competing in a highly skilled and disciplined
demonstration of the Māori performing Arts.
The event is the ‘premier Māori cultural performing arts
festival’. It is the world’s largest celebration of Māori
performing arts, showcasing Māori culture and talent
attracting upwards of 30,000 participants and visitors.
This year Nelson was represented by Te Whatukura.
Whaea Erina, who teaches in Room 17, was a member of
the group. Although they performed very well they didn’t
make the finals. However, we congratulate them for having
made it to this year’s festival – kia kaha koutou.
Federated Farmers Farm Day
Ian & Barbara Stuart, Cable Farm, 799 Cable By Road,
Nelson 7071 are opening their farm to families on Sunday
13 March, 10am – 3pm. For further information go to:
www.farmday.org.nz for maps, directions and further
information.
No Dogs
I’m sure the family dog is much loved by all in the family
and for all intents and purposes is treated as a family
member. However, when it comes to school it would be
appreciated if you would leave them at the school gate.
Most people won’t know your dog as you do and all they
see is a potential health threat for their children. From that
point of view we prefer that they not come onto the school
grounds.
Trinity Parking
I have been asked to let members of our school community
know that Trinity Church grounds are not to be used as a
drop off point for the school. It’s tempting to use it that
way but also very annoying for the church and its business.
The last offender was the drive of a silver station wagon
registration number DRS471.
No Homework?
Last week I wrote about the importance of pencil grip
when children start writing. This week I have included 3
