Summary
NetScaler VPX is a virtual NetScaler appliance that is hosted on a virtualization platform, either Citrix
XenServer™ managed by Citrix XenCenter™ client or VMware ESX and ESXi managed by VMware
vSphere client. It supports all the features of a physical NetScaler, except interface related events and
tagged VLAN. Before a NetScaler VPX can be deployed to support any of its application optimization
features, application security features, or application switching features, it must be properly licensed.
License delivery for the NetScaler VPX products will be fulfilled through the Activation System/Manage
Licenses tool on MyCitrix.com. This article contains instructions on how to license Citrix NetScaler VPX
virtual appliances.

Licensing Overview
Note: Evaluation and Not For Resale (NFR) licenses are restricted to Platinum Edition only.
2
Citrix NetScaler Licensing Guide
For a list of features associated with NetScaler family edition licenses, read the Citrix NetScaler VPX Data
Sheet located on the Reference Desk on MyCitrix.com. Family edition licenses are not coupled to the
software release running on the virtual appliance, meaning customers are free to upgrade or downgrade
the operating system version on the NetScaler VPX without modifying their family edition license.
Upgrade Licenses
Customers are able to upgrade their virtual appliance from one family edition to another and from one
performance range to another by purchasing an upgrade license.
There are two types of upgrades for this product.
Edition Upgrades- Standard to Enterprise, Standard to Platinum and Enterprise to Platinum. Edition
upgrades must be within the same bandwidth.
Performance (Bandwidth) Upgrades- 10Mbps to 200 Mbps, 10Mbps to 1000Mbps and 200Mbps to
1000Mbps. Performance upgrades can only be performed on the same Edition (Standard, Enterprise,
or Platinum).
Example: In order to upgrade a NetScaler VPX 10 Mbps Standard Edition license to the NetScaler
VPX 200 Mbps Platinum Edition, the upgrade must be done in two steps.
o Citrix NetScaler VPX Upgrade from 10 Mbps Standard Edition to 200 Mbps Standard Edition
o Citrix NetScaler VPX Upgrade from 200 Mbps Standard Edition to 200 Mbps Platinum Edition

License Delivery
Delivery of NetScaler VPX feature and upgrade licenses is done through the Activation System/Manage
Licenses tool on MyCitrix.com. The NetScaler VPX virtual appliance will start and run the pre-installed
operating system version, but the features of the virtual appliance cannot be enabled until a family edition
license is installed. The NetScaler VPX family edition license and any additional upgrade licenses
(purchased separately) are retrieved through the Activation System/Manage Licenses tool on
MyCitrix.com. For each NetScaler VPX virtual appliance purchased, a license authorization code is
electronically delivered to the customer’s MyCitrix Account. Customers must use the Activation
System/Manage Licenses tool on MyCitrix.com to convert the license entitlement(s) to license file(s)
required to run on the Citrix NetScaler VPX virtual appliance(s). Once the license file(s) have been
downloaded from MyCitrix.com, the file(s) should be copied to the respective virtual appliance(s). Then
the virtual appliance must be restarted for the applied license to activate the NetScaler VPX feature-set.
This article provides step-by-step instructions to generate, download, and install NetScaler VPX family
edition and upgrade licenses using the Activation System/Manage Licenses tool on MyCitrix.com. If you
encounter problems with your license allocation, contact Citrix Customer Service. To locate a Customer
Service or Technical Support center near you, visit

Citrix NetScaler Licensing Guide
Use the Activation System/Manage Licenses tool to convert your license entitlements to license files that
you install on the Citrix NetScaler VPX virtual appliance. Once you navigate to MyCitrix.com and log on to
your account, you will allocate your licenses using the license code(s) under your organization’s account,
generate the license file, manually download the file, and copy it to the /nsconfig/license directory on the
NetScaler VPX virtual appliance.
For further instructions on using Activation System/Manage Licenses tool on MyCitrix.com, refer to

Upgrading from Release 9.1 Build 97.3, Build 98.5 or Build 99.8 to Release 9.1 Build 100.3
or above
Starting with Release 9.1 Build 100.3, the license file for the NetScaler VPX virtual appliance is linked to
the MAC address of the lowest numbered device in the virtual network interface list. Previously, if the
network interface (and associated MAC address) used to generate the license file for NetScaler VPX had
been reordered, the MAC address of the NetScaler VPX license changed. Depending on the Host ID
used to allocate your NetScaler VPX license, an upgrade from any previous builds to Release 9.1 Build
100.3 or higher may impact whether the license is read correctly when the VM is restarted or rebooted.
For VPX customers who upgrade to Release 9.1 Build 100.3, recent changes in the licensing server
process on the virtual machine will invalidate licenses on VMs which had more than one interface.
Beginning with Release 9.1 Build 100.3, the Host ID contained in the NetScaler VPX license should
match the MAC address of the first interface created for the VM. To ensure that the NetScaler VPX
license functions as expected, choose one of the available workarounds.
1) If you have only one virtual interface defined on the NetScaler VPX, no license change is required.
2) If you have more than one virtual interface defined to the NetScaler VPX:
Through XenCenter, delete all but the highest numbered virtual interface and add back the other
interfaces. This has the effect of making the highest numbered interface the lowest. Step-by-step
instructions are described in License Workaround Following an Upgrade to Release 9.1 Build
100.3.
OR
Obtain a new license for the lowest numbered defined interface. You are allowed to do so without
charge. You can re-host NetScaler VPX license files up to a maximum of three times. After that,
you must call Citrix customer support to request for additional re-hosting of license files. (See
How to Re-Allocate a VPX License section at the end of this document.)
4
Citrix NetScaler Licensing Guide
Similarly, the output of the command <lmutil lmhostid –ether> on the NetScaler VPX console shows the
same MAC address 0204de74aabb.
Following and upgrade of the NetScaler VPX virtual appliance to release 9.1 build 100.3, the license file is
not read properly. This is noted in the output of <show license> which indicates a throughput of 1Mbps
and very few features licensed.

The /var/log/license.log file contains the reason: a mistmatch between the expected host ID MAC
address (00:04:de:74:aa:bb) and the current valid MAC address (4a:fc:6e:15:34:c1) as defined by the
command <lmutil lmhostid –ether>. (See Obtaining the Host ID section at the end of this document.)
Through XenCenter for NS VPX for XenServer, it is possible to delete all virtual network interfaces except
for the one interface using the licensed MAC address.
1. Shutdown the NetScaler virtual appliance. This can be accomplished two ways.
Through XenCenter, select the NetScaler virtual appliance and then click Shutdown button on the top
menu bar.
A second method is to select the XenServer host machine and then select the Console tab. From the
XenServer console, type xe vm-shutdown vm=<name of the NetScaler VM>. To quickly retrieve
the correctly formatted name of the NetScaler VPX virtual machine, type xe vm-shutdown vm=
followed by <tab> <tab> to display the names of the installed virtual machines. Then re-enter the
command and cut and paste the name of the VM into the command or enter the first few letters (case
sensitive) of the command followed by <tab> to autocomplete the name.
2. Select the lowest numbered virtual network interface, then click Remove Interface. Repeat for all of
the interfaces except for the interface with the highest device number. After removing the extra virtual
network interfaces, there should be one virtual interface listed as Device 0.
Now you can re-enter the deleted interfaces. The re-added interfaces will appear as Device 1, Device 2,
etc.
3. Click Add Interface and select the network interface and allow the MAC address to autogenerate.
Click Finish. Repeat to re-add all of the previously deleted virtual interfaces.
