Vocabulary Related to Aquatic
1. Swimming

STYLES PENJELASAN/EXPALANATION CONTOH/EXAMPLE

a. Breaststroke a swimming stroke executed in a prone position by
coordinating a kick in which the legs are brought
forward with the knees together and the feet are turned
outward and whipped back with a glide and a backward
sweeping movement of the arms

b. The Crawl Stroke the swimmer, lying flat on the water with face
submerged, takes alternate overhand arm strokes while
moving his legs up and down alternately from the knee.

c. Butterfly Stroke a stroke performed face down, in which both arms are
thrust out at the sides at the same time, brought forward
out of the water and then down through the water in a
circular motion, while using an up-and-down leg
movement

d. Back Crawl Stroke uses alternating and opposite arm movements. As one arm
pulls through the water from an overhead position to the
hip, the other arm recovers above the water from the hip to
the overhead position and vice versa. The legs perform a
flutter kick, similar to the one used in the front crawl

In forward dives, divers will face the end of the board and
rotate themselves away from the diving board using a
forward approach and hurdle. There are two main positions
for forward dives.
Forward Dive in the Pike Position
Forward 2 1/2 Somersaults in the Pike Position
In back dives, divers will face the end of the board with their
back towards the water and rotate themselves away from the
board. There are also two positions for back dives.
Back Dive in the Straight Position
Back 2 1/2 Somersaults in the Tuck Position
 c. Reverse Dives Reverse dives are also known as a “gainer”, where the diver
faces the end of the board and rotate themselves back
towards the diving board, while moving forward and away
from the diving board. The two positions for reverse dives
are:

d. Inward Dives For inward dives, divers begin on the end of the board with
their back to the water and rotate themselves towards the
diving board, while moving away from the board. There are
two methods for inward dives as well.

1. High Jump

a. The Standing Jump The athlete would stand sideways right next to the
high bar, and jump standing straight up, only
veering slightly sideways and landing upright. For
the moment they were in the air and crossing the
high bar, there was a slight scissor motion to add

b. The Hurdle The technique is performed as one does a hurdle,

with the run being a straight approach, with one
leg raising up to the bar, and quickly raising the
other one over the bar once the first has cleared

c. The Scissor The scissor involved a skewed J shape approach,

where the jumper would hurdle the bar like
normal, but while going over the athlete would do
a sciccor kick with their legs, while twisting the
back slightly to raise the hips

d. Eastern Cutoff Think of this one as essentially the scissor

technique, only with the back being quickly
straightened out while clearing the bar. This also
grants the advantage of the athlete still being able
to land on their feet, while at the same time still
doing a sideways layout, if you will, over the bar
 e. The Straddle in the straddle the jumper crosses the bar while facing
the bar. From this position, the jumper has a huge
advantage because they will be going over a height
more relative to their center of mass

f. Western Roll  the takeoff leg is the one nearer to the bar. The
leading leg is kicked high and fast, lifting the body
into a layout on the side or back above the bar,

leg. After the bar is crossed over top, the jumper
will rotate in mid-air, allowing for a 3 point
landing.

g. Fosbury flop With the center of mass so low, he was able to jump
