ASSEMBLAGE and PAINTING

"When you put together things that other

people have thrown out, you’re really bringing
them to life – a spiritual life that surpasses the
life for which they were originally created."

- Louise Nevelson
WHAT IS ASSEMBLAGE?
SCULPTURE (in “Western” art), used to be pretty
much:
ADDITIVE (like clay, where you
add material to make your
sculpture)

SUBTRACTIVE (like wood or

stone, where you carve away
parts to make your sculpture)

ASSEMBLAGE started in the 1950s, and focuses on

combining “found objects” or parts to create sculpture

In your groups:
CREATE a “narrative assemblage” from discarded
objects and materials.
• what is the story behind your assemblage?
• what is happening?
• what mood or feeling is created by your
assemblage?
• what primary or secondary color would best suit
your assemblage?
