Sterlite Power Conductors commissioned in India’s 1st 765kV Power Transmission Line

…. PGCIL successfully charges Circuit-I of the Sipat-Seoni Line

Press Release For Immediate Publication
Pune, INDIA – January 9, 2008: Sterlite Technologies Limited (formerly, Sterlite Optical Technologies Ltd), India’s only
integrated optical fiber manufacturer and global provider of Power Transmission Conductors, Optical Fibers and
Telecommunication Cables, today announced that its Power Transmission Conductors were successfully
commissioned by PGCIL (Power Grid Corporation of India Limited) in the first 765 kV EHV (Extra High Voltage)
Transmission Line to be charged in India. PGCIL announce the charging of this transmission line at a press
conference held on January 8, 2008 in New Delhi, India.
Sterlite was the sole manufacturer and supplier of over 4200 km of ACSR Bersimis Conductors that were
installed in Circuit-I of the 351 km route of the Sipat-Seoni EHV Transmission Line that connects the Indian states of
Chattisgarh & Madhya Pradesh.
The Sipat-Seoni Line would transmit 1500MVA power on a single circuit line. These 765 kV lines will be able to link
generation projects at the pitheads with the consuming states across the country and in process, reduce transmission
losses.
Says Mr Pravin Agarwal – Director, Sterlite Technologies Limited, “We are honored to partner with PGCIL for its
landmark project in India. With over a decade of experience with the varying requirements of customers in global
markets in the Power Sector, Sterlite is uniquely positioned to be a significant contributor to India’s vision of Power for
All by Year 2012”

Sterlite is a significant contributor to the global power sector through indigenous manufacture of a complete range of
power transmission conductors at Extra High Voltages (400kV - 800kV), High Voltages (66kV – 220kV) and power
distribution conductors (11kV- 33kV).
Sterlite has a cumulative manufacturing capacity of 115,000 MT (Metric Tons), making it the largest manufacturer in
India and amongst the Top 5 global manufacturers of Power Conductors. Sterlite currently has about 3% global market
share for Power Transmission Conductors and these products have been sold in 38 countries across Africa, Middle
East, Asia & Europe.
Sterlite currently supplies about 27% of India’s total demand for power transmission & distribution conductors. In
H1 2007-08, the Company earned revenues or INR6401.4 Million (US$ 160 Million) of which Sterlite's Power
Transmission Business earned net revenues or INR 4079.3 Million (US$ 102 Million). Export sales for the Sterlite's
Power Conductors accounted for about 28% of total revenues from sale of its Power Conductors.

Introduction to 765kV EHV Transmission Lines

Electrical transmission lines are much like water pipes. In the case of transmission lines, the higher the voltage, the
more electricity that can be transmitted, just like a wider water pipe can carry a larger volume of water. Electrical
transmission lines operate at high voltages and 15 double circuit 138 kV lines One 765 kV line
carry large amounts of electricity over long
distances. These power lines generally range in
voltage from 46 kV to 765 kV; those in the upper
levels of that range (230 kV and above) are called
extra high-voltage (EHV) lines.
The average 345 kV circuit is typically capable of
carrying five times the amount of electricity of a
138 kV circuit, and a 765 kV circuit is typically
capable of carrying six times the amount of
electricity of a 345 kV circuit.
There are numerous advantages to 765 kV
technology. In most instances, the size of the
structures and the right of way needed to build 765
kV are comparable to smaller voltage lines.
However, 765 kV transmission lines are much
more efficient than lower voltage lines. For
example one 765 kV line on a 60 meter wide right
of way can carry the same electricity as 15, double
circuit 138 kV lines that would require about 450
meters of right of way. 450 meters 60 meters
