Sector History
Telecom reforms:
India has one of the largest numbers of mobile operators among the emerging
markets. Most of the domestic players have significant foreign investments. For
example, Telekom Malaysia owns around 40% stake in Spice Telecom, one of the
oldest mobile operators in India with approximately 4 million subscribers. Similarly,
Singaporean Sing Tel owns about 30% stake in Bharti Airtel, India's leading mobile
operator.
The sector of telecom was a monopoly under the Central Government of India.
During the 1990s this sector faced fierce challenges due to the development in the
technological sector.
The sector was privatized and with the abolition of the monopoly new player entered
the consumer market. The competition increased in the telecom sector, the rates were
slashed in order to grab the share of the market and the customers were provided with
better services.
The telecommunication reforms in India started in the eighties with the mission better
communication. This is regarded as the first phase of the reformation process. Several
private manufacturers of tailor made equipments entered the market. There were
private developer for indigenous technologies and the franchisee for STD/ISD and
PCO increased. The Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) and Mahanagar
Abhivaykti 2010 Page 5
Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) were set up under the Government of India's
Department of Telecommunication.
The second phase of telecommunication reforms in India came in the early nineties.
The introduction of the New Economic Policy (NEP) in the year 1991 was a landmark
in the history of telecom industry sector in India. The manufacturing of equipments
pertaining to telecom sector was decentralized and several value added services were
introduced into the market. The telecom services were divided into basic telephony,
radio paging and cellular mobile The TRAI was established an independent regulatory
body pertaining to telecom sector. The growth of the private sector increased.
The third phase of the telecommunication reforms in India took place in the period of
the late nineties. The government of India introduced the New Telecom Policy 1999.
The TRAI was endowed with more power. The concept of revenue sharing was
introduced to replace the fixed license fee. The National Long Distance was
introduced with free entrance. Moreover, there was introduction of International Long
Distance schemes. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a corporate body of
the telecom service sector was formed, followed by the introduction of the Internet to
the Indian market.
The rates of the National Long Distance were cut down by 60%
The prices of the hand sets and telephone equipments were reduced
The charges on calls were reduced by 8 times
The introduction of the cellular mobile phone
The bandwidth availability was increased

Current Trends & Technology
Current Trends:
Telecom sector, unlike other sectors has shown the highest growth in terms of competition,
benefit for end users, and pricing, social policies, etc.
Although biggies like Airtel, BSNL and Reliance leading in the race to access rural markets,
smaller players are not behind. In past few months, DoCoMo witnessing the biggest jump in
proportion of subscribers coming from the rural areas (increased from 10% to 18% in one
quarter). Even Uninor, albeit on a smaller subscriber base, has a relatively high proportion of
subscribers coming from the rural areas at 34%. Aircel is the only operator whose proportion
from rural areas has actually gone down.
Abhivaykti 2010 Page 7
The competition in terms of pricing has become intense. More number of players, per second
plans has reduced the pre-paid rev/min saw a sharp fall from 76p/min in Mar-09 to 55p in
Mar-10; a fall of 30%. Post revenues are relatively stable as of now. The reason is that
incumbents (majority of postpaid subscribers) right now have no incentive to cut tariffs as
MNP and 3G will take some time. However this segment is too going to witness pressure in
terms of tariffs
The Circle C MoU have held on and even widened the gap versus the A/B circles in the last
12 months. Investors’ concern on C circle subscribers diluting the ARPU have also not
materialized given ARPU is in-line with the B circles and only 10% below national average.
This usage elasticity for C circle is especially strong as it comes despite a relatively higher y-
o-y increase in penetration in these circles.
The two key reasons for this trend are: Low fixed-line usage resulting in fixed-line like usage
in wireless and High market concentration results in lower incidence of multi-SIM and
prevents leakage of minutes
If you look at the table below, many of the circles have more than 100% teledensity. Even C
category circles like Bihar and Orissa’s urban penetration is also at 130% (national average at
120%). This is mainly due to multi Sim usage which is facilitated by handsets and sometimes
due to attractive tariffs. The switching cost in this case is negligible.
Abhivaykti 2010 Page 8
Fixed line network is likely to be sustained, albeit with a very small footprint. India
has already crossed the stage where Mobile lines are in multiples of fixed lines
The next phase will be crossover between data and voice There will be a process of
technical consolidation and system integration of different competing standards in a
single platform
Future vision of telecom is a vision of IT. Telecom will be the springboard of future
expansion of IT heralding in an information society. ICT will spread among the
masses and will spur innovation, entrepreneurship and growth

Recent Mergers and Acquisitions
The number of mergers and acquisitions in Telecom Sector has been increasing significantly.
Telecommunications industry is one of the most profitable and rapidly developing industries
in the world and it is regarded as an indispensable component of the worldwide utility and
services sector. Telecommunication industry deals with various forms of communication
mediums, for example mobile phones, fixed line phones, as well as Internet and broadband
services.
Abhivaykti 2010 Page 17
Over the last few years, a phenomenal growth has been witnessed in the number of mergers
and acquisitions taking place in the telecommunications industry. The reasons behind this
development include the following:
9 Deregulation
9 Introduction of sophisticated technologies (Wireless land phone services)
9 Innovative products and services (Internet, broadband and cable services)
Mergers and acquisitions in Telecom Sector can also have some negative effects,
which include monopolization of the telecommunication products and services,
unemployment and others. However, the governments of various countries take
appropriate steps to curb these problems.
Abhivaykti 2010 Page 18
Following are the important mergers and acquisitions that took place in the
telecommunications sector:
Abhivaykti 2010 Page 19
Related terms to the sector
3G Wireless :
Application services include wide-area wireless voice telephone, mobile
Internet access, video calls and mobile TV.
ATM Protocols:
In the ATM protocol domain the socket interface provides an application with
direct access to an ATM virtual connection. The ATM protocol is offered as a new
address family.. Each Protocol Data Unit (PDU) to be transmitted over the connection
is handed directly to the ATM adaptation layer for segmentation into ATM cells and
subsequent transmission.
Broadband Cable:
Abhivaykti 2010 Page 20
Internet access is Internet access provided through satellites. The service can
be provided to users world-wide through Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.
Geostationary satellites can offer higher data speeds, but their signals can not reach
some polar regions of the world. Different types of satellite systems have a wide
range of different features and technical limitations, which can greatly affect their
usefulness and performance in specific applications.
GPRS:
GPRS General packet radio service (GPRS) is a packet oriented mobile data service
on the 2G and 3G cellular communication systems global system for mobile
communications (GSM).
GPRS usage charging is based on volume of data, either as part of a bundle or on a
pay as you use basis. An example of a bundle is up to 5Gb per month for a fixed fee.
Usage above the bundle cap is either charged for per megabyte or disallowed. The pay
as you use charging is typically per megabyte of traffic. This contrasts with circuit
switching data, which is typically billed per minute of connection time, regardless of
whether or not the user transfers data during that period.
CDMA
Code division multiple access (CDMA) is a channel access method used by various
radio communication technologies.
One of the basic concepts in data communication is the idea of allowing several
transmitters to send information simultaneously over a single communication channel.
This allows several users to share a band of frequencies . This concept is called
multiplexing.
CDMA employs spread-spectrum technology and a special coding scheme (where
each transmitter is assigned a code) to allow multiple users to be multiplexed over the
same physical channel.
Telecommunications Services (In telecommunication, the term telecommunications
service has the following meanings:
• Any service provided by a telecommunication provider.
Abhivaykti 2010 Page 21
Telecommunications Software :
Telecommunications software is any type of software package that aids in the process of
electronic communications, especially those that involve the transmission of audio in some
manner. There are many different tyapes of software designed to handle telecommunication
functions in various settings, ranging from simple software that is installed and utilized by an
end user, to the software that is necessary to drive the function of entire networks. Depending
on the purpose of the software, it may be used to drive wireless devices as well as those used
to drive fiber optic and copper wire networks.

MICRO ANALYSIS
Company History & Corporations
Associated With It
Idea cellular Ltd. is one of the bigger players in growing Telecom sector of India.
Initially the Birlas, the Tatas and AT&T Wireless each held one-third equity in the
company. But in 2004 AT&T merger with Cingular lead to sale its equity share to
Tata and Birlas in equal propotion.
After that TATA ventured in CDMA service with TATA indicom that arises
differences between both the partners. (Tata and Birala's)
Following that when TATA Indicom applied for license in Mumbai DOT India
refuses to give license. (A single company cant operate in a sector with two different
operators i.e. Idea and tata indicom)
Idea Cellular is a wireless telephony company operating in all the 22 telecom circles in India
based in Mumbai. It is the 3rd largest GSM company in India behind Airtel and Vodafone
and ahead of state run player BSNL.
In 2000, Tata Cellular was a company providing mobile services in AP. When Birla-
AT&T brought Maharashtra and Gujarat to the table, the merger of these two entities
was a reality. Thus Birla-Tata-AT&T, popularly known as Batata, was born and was
later branded as !dea.
Abhivaykti 2010 Page 23
Then Idea set sights on RPG’s operations in Madhya Pradesh which was successfully
acquired, helping Batata have a million subscribers, and the licence to be the fourth
operator in Delhi was clinched.
In 2004, Idea (the company had by then been rechristened) bought over the Escorts
group’s Escotel gaining Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (West) and Kerala — and licences
for three more — UP (East), Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. By the end of that
year, four million Indians were on the company’s network.
In 2005, AT&T sold its investment in Idea, and the year after Tatas also bid good bye
to pursue an independent telecom business. And Idea was left only with one
promoter, the AV Birla group.
Customer Service
The company has its retail outlets under the "My Idea" banner. The company has also
been the first to offer flexible tariff plans for prepaid customers. It also offers GPRS
services in urban areas.
Idea Cellular won the GSM Association Award for "Best Billing and Customer Care
Solution" for 2 consecutive years.
IDEA Cellular has been recognized as the 'Most Customer Responsive Company' in
the Telecom sector, at the prestigious Avaya GlobalConnect Customer
Responsiveness Awards 2010.
Abhivaykti 2010 Page 24
Holding
Initially the Birlas, the Tatas and AT&T Wireless each held one-third equity in the
company. But following AT&T Wireless' merger with Cingular Wireless in 2004,
Cingular decided to sell its 32.9% stake in Idea. This stake was bought by both the
Tatas and Birlas at 16.45% each.
Tata's foray into the cellular market with its own subsidiary, Tata Indicom, a CDMA-
based mobile provider, cropped differences between the Tatas and the Birlas. This
dual holding by the Tatas also became a major reason for the delay in Idea being
granted a license to operate in Mumbai.
Abhivaykti 2010 Page 25
Current position of company
Idea Cellular Limited was incorporated in 1995. The company is among the top four
mobile telephony players in India with an 11 per cent all-India subscribers market
share. More importantly, it ranks third in terms of wireless revenue market share at
12.7 per cent. Idea ranks second with 20.8 per cent revenue market share in nine
service areas where it holds 900MHz spectrum and which derive 48 per cent of
industry's gross revenues (based on gross revenues for UAS and mobile licenses only,
for December 2009 quarter, as released by TRAI).
The market positioning of Idea reflects the strength of its brand considering the fact
that Idea added 14 out of its total 22 service areas in the past four years. Today it is a
pan-India player with commercial operations in all 22 service areas. Its subscriber
base has grown multifold from 7.37 million in March 2006 to 63.82 million in March
2010.
Idea holds 16 per cent stake in Indus Towers, a joint venture with other telecom
majors Bharti Airtel and Vodafone. Indus Towers is the world's largest tower
company with over one lakh towers. In 2007, Idea was listed on the National Stock
Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
Idea enjoys a market leadership position in many of its operational areas. It offers
GPRS on all its operating networks for all categories of subscribers, and was the first
company in India to commercially launch the next generation EDGE technology in
Delhi in 2003. As a pioneer in technology deployment, it has been at the forefront
through the adoption of bio fuels to power its base stations, and by employing satellite
connectivity to reach inaccessible rural areas in Madhya Pradesh.
Abhivaykti 2010 Page 26
Idea has been a leader in the introduction of value-added services, and there are many
firsts to its credit, including a voice portal 'Say Idea', Idea TV, voice chat and instant
messenger. Tariff plans have been customer-friendly, catering to the unique needs of
different customer segments, for instance the 'Women's Card' caters to the special
needs of women on the move, and 'Youth Card' covers the emerging youth segment.
Idea has won numerous awards and is the only Indian GSM operator to win the
prestigious GSM Association Award consecutively in the best mobile technology
category for the Best Billing and Customer Care Solution both in 2006 and in 2007,
even in the face of international competition.

OVERVIEW:
Until recently, there were two types of corporate social responsibility:
Now, the folks at Idea Cellular have come with a third and more cost effective way.
Imagine you are helping society and advertise it.
9 The campaign highlights the power of Mobile telephony to address the socially
relevant theme of education.
9 By integrating a social message into the new campaign, we are not only
reinforcing the difference that can be made through the use of modern technology
but also the power of a new idea.
The second quote is especially awful. Advertising a potentially impractical and unfeasible use
of your product, while extolling its virtues is definitely not a social message. While the line
between advertising a product and corporate social responsibility is not exactly thin, the folks
at Lowe Lintas and Idea have managed to blur even that successfully.
