INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE

1. The Old Testament has 17 Historical, 5 Poetical, and 17 Prophetic books in it.

 The 17 Historical Books are: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth,
1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther.
 The 5 Poetical Books are: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon,

 The 17 Prophetic Books are: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos,
Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.

2.The New Testament has 4 Gospels, Acts, 21 Epistles, and Revelation in it.
 The 4 Gospels are: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,

 The 21 Epistles are: Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1
Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1

5. The first translation of the English Bible was initiated by John Wycliffe and completed by John Purvey in
1388.

6. The Bible has since been translated in part or in whole into over 1200 languages and dialects.

7. The Bible was divided into chapters by Stephen Langton in 1228. The Old Testament was divided into verses
by R. Nathan in 1488 and the New Testament by Robert Stephanus in 1551.

8. The entire Bible divided into chapters and verses first appeared in the Geneva Bible of 1560.

9. Today, the Bible, is the largest seller of all books published.
