HRD Report 2008-09
Preface
On December 20, 2006, I was invited to speak at Bijoy Krishna Girls’ College, Howrah, on the
occasion of a seminar sponsored by NAAC. The topic I was given to speak on was “The
Changing Face of Higher Education: Introduction of IT in College Curriculum”.

The subject and the issue intrigues me. I happen to be a computer scientist by education, a
technologist by experience and an entrepreneur by choice. For eighteen years, in the United
States, I have had the opportunity in developing, deploying and managing hardcore IT and
Telecom Technologies; in various executive capacities and then as a business owner (all of
the above because the Indian tax payers footed the bills for my education). Engaged in the
above capacities, hence, I managed to gather first hand experience in what this industry
requires (any modern industry for that matter) in its HR in addition to formal education. Now I
am back in India and have incidentally engaged my focus on development of adequately
skilled HR for the new economy industries for the sustenance of the current economic upturn
in India. The occasion, hence, gave me an opportunity to express my views on introduction of
IT and other necessary skills development programs in college curriculum in the context of
changing face of higher education in India, which I wish to share with you here.

Introduction of any subject in the Higher Education (HE) curriculum should serve either of the
two purposes stated below so that the recipients of the HE can equip themselves for gainful
engagement (employment or entrepreneurship) immediately after their graduation: (1) increase
the recipients’ knowledge in some specific domain such as, Medicine, Law, Commerce,
Computer Science, Pure Science, Arts, etc. and/or (2) increase the recipients’ generic skills or
ability to apply such knowledge for gainful engagement.

Industry, across the various emerging segments, requires that the graduates must have the
ability to apply and express the knowledge acquired, by use of two generic skills, namely, IT
skills (degree varies depending on profession) and communication skills. Industry also requires
that the graduates hone up another generic skill popularly known as soft skills in order to be
able to perform on job. Some soft skills are analytical ability, logical reasoning, decision
making, team temperament, positive attitude, leadership ability, etc.

For the last five years we have been involved in conducting industry requirements research;
developing awareness about the industry, emerging job prospects and corresponding
requirements; career counseling of students; conducting training needs analysis through
assessments; training the students with above employability skills and providing trained
students with employment linkage to hiring companies. It was proactive effort on part of the
Dept. of IT, Govt. of West Bengal to take the initiative of starting this program by forming the
Centre of Excellence for IT/ITeS Assessment and Training (CEIAT). The budding resurgence
of industry in the state has benefited from this effort by way of receiving trained manpower.

We have been generously supported and appreciated by the Academic community at large
throughout the span of the program. So much so that, some of the colleges have already
introduced on campus Career Development and Placement Cell (CDPC) which are being
implemented with our support and assistance. These cells will train the students of these
colleges with employability skills while they are in the college and provide employment linkage
to the students after they graduate. This is a step towards introduction of IT, communication
and soft skills in the Higher Education curriculum.

HRD Report 2008-09

Over the last five years we have been able to assist around 2000 families with an earning
member. Majority of them are from rural and suburban areas. We have been able to generate
employment ourselves. Many of our students opted to work with us. We have made substantial
investments in establishing centers, developing infrastructure and providing quality training and
placement assistance primarily in non-metro areas. Starting with one center at St. Xavier’s
College, Kolkata in March 2004, we now operate from all the districts of West Bengal besides
Guwahati in Assam. We have been able to attract professional and management talents from
MNCs primarily because of the social focus of the organization and potential for career growth.
Our vendors, ranging from eminent media houses to young men engaged in distributing
handbills, have sensed our honest effort to involve people from all walks of life, strengthening
the potential for sustainable growth. They have been lending support to our cause all along.
My observation reveals that, some of these budding entrepreneurs have consolidated over the
past few years by means of business from us and have managed to generate employment in
the process. There have been ups and downs from time to time but my colleagues have
worked through them diligently and labouriously with commitment to the cause. We sure have
made human mistakes at times but have been prompt in correcting them. As a result of all the
reasons above, we earned the trust and respect of the community.

I wanted to come back to India while I was still productive. I am glad I did. It gives me immense
pleasure to be engaged in a work with social implications, addressing the issue of
unemployment, a critical problem faced by our country. There is no better reward than a
student hailing from a remote village, with a family of 7 to support, when gets a job and comes
back with a box of pera to express his appreciation. Money could never buy this happiness for
me. I sincerely convey my appreciation and gratitude to all who took notice, paid attention and
helped.

This is my humble submission. I solicit suggestions, from all the concerned stake holders in the
context that could provide positive reinforcement of our effort.

Warm regards
Sincerely,

Santanu Bhattacharjee
Director

Subject: Request to be a speaker at NICT 2006, 31 August - 01 September 2006,

Guwahati, India

Dear Mr. Bhattacharjee,

I write to thank you for your presence at "ITES-BPO Conclave East 2006" the meeting
organised by NASSCOM held in Kolkata on 14th July 2006, and particularly for your
participation as a speaker at the event.

The event offered a good opportunity for senior decision makers in the industry, government
and media to understand the developments in the BPO industry, opportunities for
collaboration and turning the so termed `mid-life crisis’ into an opportunity. The response to
the conference was most heartening and the feedback has been very positive.

I would appreciate receiving any reactions and suggestions that you may have, so as to
further improve the event.

We look forward to your continued support to NASSCOM.

With warm regards,

Kiran
