Human Development 101 Research Paper

Guidelines

This assignment is intended to give you the opportunity to explore some of the empirical
and theoretical work conducted in Child and Human Development over the past few
decades. Your finished paper should be 800 to 1200 words (approximately 4-5 pages) in
length. No paper should be shorter than 3 pages or longer than 6 pages in length and
should include your name, student number and a title. It is required that the all papers be
typewritten or word-processed and should be double-spaced with 12-point font. These
papers should include a summary of an approved research article from an accredited
journal in a field related to human development. These papers should also include a
proposed research study that follows logically from the summary of the approved article.

Your completed paper is due April 22, 2011, is worth 35 points, and should include the
following:

1. Provide a brief introduction to your topic (5 points). In a few sentences describe the
broad issue you are addressing and why it is important to the field of human
development.

2. Summarize your research article (10 points). In this section, you should provide a
complete summary of the article you have selected including the author's question of
interest, the author's predictions, a detailed review of the research studies, the author's
findings, and the author's conclusions. Please provide appropriate references for the
information presented in your paper. This is an important section since it will provide the
background for your proposed study and should receive significant attention.

3. Proposed research question (5 points). Based on the summary, suggest a specific,

follow-up research question and indicate why the question is important.

4. Proposed research study (15 points). In this section, you should describe in detail how
you plan to answer the research question posed. This description should include the
participants (who and how many), materials (what is needed to conduct the research),
procedure (a step-by-step account of how the study will unfold), and hypotheses about
the results. This is an important section since it will provide the full description of how
your research question will be answered and should receive significant attention.

All papers will be submitted through the turnitin.com link on eLearning.

NOTE: IF YOU EVER USE A DIRECT QUOTATION FROM ANY READING THAT
WAS WRITTEN BY SOMEONE ELSE, YOU MUST USE QUOTATION MARKS TO
INDICATE THAT THOSE WORDS ARE NOT YOUR OWN. FAILURE TO DO SO
CAN BE CONSIDERED PLAGARISM, AND IS A SERIOUS OFFENSE. Always use
your own words whenever possible.
