Tom’s Job

1. One thing that shows that work is the most important thing in Tom Benecke’s life is that his wife, the
woman who knows him best, tells him that he works to much: “Darling, you are working yourself to the
bone” (6).

2. Another thing that shows that work is the most important thing to Tom is that he stays home to work on a
Saturday night instead of going to the movies with the woman he loves: “He apologized and told his wife
he couldn’t go out with her” (7).

3. A third thing that shows that work is the most important thing in Tom’s life is that he often worked
Saturdays, doing marketing research by counting customers passing store displays: “This would make the
fourth weekend in a row he would have to go to the super-market” (7).

4. A fourth thing that shows that work is the most important thing in Tom’s life is that he has obsesses
about finishing a research report that he believes will get him a raise: “He worked feverishly in hopes of
promotion and compensation” (8).

5. Perhaps the most powerful evidence that shows that work is the most important thing in Tom’s life is
that he is willing to risk his life to retrieve his research notes from the ledge outside his apartment building,
a ledge high above the street below: “He knew it was dangerous, but even so, he climbed out onto the
ledge” (9).
