ARTIST STATEMENT

My vision of visual art lies in attention and intention. As an artist I appreciate and strive to convey the details. I find
inspiration, beauty and life in those details. From the stamen of a flower to the way a dancer performs a pirouette, I notice
the little things. My eye is naturally trained to see the tiny beads of dew on the flower or the powder on the dancer’s feet.
And for that very reason I feel the need to produce art in all forms. My choice of medium varies based upon each project
but I generally start with my sketchbook and my trusty black warrior number two pencil. Initially I close my eyes and
imagine what I want to convey. Loosely I let my hand sketch to find my shape. As the shape becomes more defined I will
start the arduous task of finding my details. It could be the reflection in a mirror or a key pose in an animation. It all starts
with that pencil and paper. As forms and details appear, I focus on my intention. What am I trying to say? What story am
I trying to tell? Who am I trying to speak to? With that intention I transfer my drawings into various media, ranging from
Maya, Adobe Illustrator, Final Cut Pro to an empty canvas. I don’t want to limit myself to one art form. Art is continually
changing and transforming itself. In order to keep up I stick to my attention to details, my intention to create and my desire
to learn new ways to convey them.

CURRICULUM VITAE OF ANGELA I. DAVIS 4

UNIVERSITY: East Tennessee State University
COURSE: Vector Imaging
PROJECT: Energy Drink Product Development
PROGRAMS USED: Adobe PhotoShop, and Illustrator
ASSIGNMENT
This project focused on developing a brand image for a fictional
energy drink. I chose to develop a typographic and logo dominant
design Based upon the product’s physical size I felt it best to develop
a design that could be read and recognized easily. I also wanted to
incorporate a trompe l’oeil so I merged the “i” and the “m” in impact.
The background design was constructed using caffeine molecules I
developed in Illustrator.

PROJECT: Magazine Cover
PROGRAMS USED: Adobe PhotoShop, and Illustrator
ASSIGNMENT
The purpose of this project was to design a Vector themed
magazine cover using Illustrator and Photoshop. A requirement
was to incorporate article titles, bar codes and a logo header. Based
upon the theme I developed a design that would catch readers’ eye
and be relevant to the magazine. The portrait of the woman eating
the cherry was created using shapes, colors and the pen tool in
Illustrator.

UNIVERSITY: East Tennessee State University
COURSE: Raster Imaging
PROJECT: Create A Poster
PROGRAMS USED: Adobe PhotoShop
ASSIGNMENT
This project was focused on creating an 11x17 poster for a local event.
I chose to develop a poster based upon a musical festival in Tennessee
called Bonnaroo. Playing upon the diverse musical line-up scheduled
to perform I drew the central images in pen, scanned them and added
color in Photoshop. In order to balance the typography with the
image I went with a non-linear design and created a frame-like text
field. I also focused on the hierarchy of the information, making sure
to organize it in order of importance.

COURSE: Vector Imaging
PROJECT: Software/Game Development
PROGRAMS USED: Adobe PhotoShop, and Illustrator
ASSIGNMENT
The purpose of this project was to develop and design a software box
using Adobe Illustrator. The game concept was left entirely up to us.
This project was limited to a box template. Upon completion the class
had to print out their designs, fold them according to the template and
present them as a new game. I chose to create a game for younger
children. Keeping that audience in mind I chose a very colorful palette
and appealing characters.

PROJECT: Word Meaning in Design
PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Illustrator
ASSIGNMENT
This project was designed around matching the typography of words
to their actual meanings. When considering “disconnect” I used
tracking and leading to create a separation effect. For “elimination”
I merged the i’s into the m and the n. I also chose to make the last i
grey to further the notion of elimination. “Disruption” was meant to
be read abruptly. Since we read from left to right my thought was that
the word would be harder to read and therefore more disrupted.

PROJECT: Develop an interactive video using Flash
Media Used: Adobe Flash
ASSIGNMENT:
This project was based upon designing an interactive video which
incorporates animation, sounds, buttons and action scripting. All
characters and backgrounds were created in Flash. The basic concept
was an interactive concert in which the user could control the camera
angle by clicking on different band members. The music is by Cowboy
Mouth and is used with permission of the band.

COURSE: Animation I
PROJECT: Develop a worm walk cycle using Clay Worms
Media Used: Monkey Jam
ASSIGNMENT:
The purpose of this assignment was to introduce stop motion
animation techniques. I had to create a controlled environment in
order to keep the images consistent, so I filmed this at night with
a tri-pod and I also used a desklamp to create dramatic shadows.
The actual process of moving the worms proved to be very time
consuming but I found using pencil marks kept my timing consistent. I
also used the editing software, Monkey Jam, to fix any timing issues.

PROJECT: Animated Words
Media Used: Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Motion Builder, Soundtrack Pro
ASSIGNMENT:
The purpose of this project was to animate words from a movie script.
I began by choosing different fonts and placing the words on different
layers in Photoshop. Then I animated the words in Motion focusing
on certain words and their meanings. I also paid special attention the
cadence of the word and the emphasis the speaker placed on each
one. Next I put everything together in Final Cut Pro and exported the
final compression into a quicktime movie.

COURSE: Painting II
PROJECT: Reproducing Portraits using the Grisaille Technique
Media Used: Acrylic Paint, Oil Paint and Liquin
ASSIGNMENT:
The professor asked the class to reproduce two paintings by a 15th
and 16th Century painter. I chose Vermeer and Botticelli because
of their ability to cpature light and shadow. These paintings were
completed using the Grisaille technique. I began each one with an
underpainting and then applying oil glazes in varying colors.

PROJECT: Portraits using the Grisaille Technique
Media Used: Acrylic Paint, Oil Paint and Liquin
ASSIGNMENT:
These portraits were completed using the Grisaille technique. I began
each one with an underpainting in black and white acrylic paints. Next
I mixed oil paints with liquin and glazed over the underpainting. By
building the layers with oil glazes it gives the paintings a translucent
quality. I chose these two characters from Alice in Wonderland
because of their vivid color and design strength.

COURSE: Painting II
PROJECT: Still Life Using the Impasto Technique
Media Used: Oil Paint and Liquin
ASSIGNMENT:
This still life of a skull was created with the Impasto technique.
This technique does not involve an underpainting like the Grisaille
technique. It is basically oil painting straight on the canvas. I began
by mixing oil paint with liquin and glazed over the background to
create a smooth background. Next I began painting the basic shape
of the skull using the oil paint colors I mixed. As the paint dried I
applied more layers of different colors to help define the skulls details.
The opacity of the oil paint and the extended drying time makes this
painting and technique quite different than the previous Grisaille
works.

PROJECT:
A local writer commissioned this graphic design for the cover of his
book. He wanted the cover to consist of a shopping cart full of ABC
blocks. I began the project by drawing several drafts of the cover and
sending them to the client. Once receiving his approval I drew the
final draft and scanned it. After this point the rest of the work was
achieved using Photoshop. I kept in constant contact with the client,
sending him numerous e-mails with different versions of the cover.

PROJECT:
This was a commission for a local musician’s cd cover art. Keeping
in mind the theme of her cd, which was about changing your future
and letting go of your past, I decided to photograph her walking
along a railroad track. The front cover portrays her walking towards
a new future and the back cover portrays her walking away from the
past. I also decided to incorporate the musician’s favorite flower onto
the actual cd and the inside artwork. All photo manipulation and
photography was performed by me.
