Asking and Giving Directions is a way of asking ang giving directions or directions to
others. (asking and giving direction merupakan cara menanyakan dan memberikan petunjuk
atau arah kepada orang lain)
1. Asking Direction
a. Greeting
Before asking others for directions, it is the best to greeting first. It is to give an
impression of courtesy so that person to talk will respon well.
(sebelum menanyakan arah kepada orang lain, sebaiknya kita mengucapkan
salam terlebih dahulu. Hal ini untuk memberikan kesan sopan sehingga orang
yang di ajak bocara akan merespon baik)
A typical Greeting
Hello / Hello sir or madam. (hello tuan atau nyonya)
Excuse me! / Excuse me sir or mom! (permisi tuan atau ibu)
Good morning / Good afternoon / Good evening (selamat pagi / selamat
siang / selamat malam)
Pardon sir or mom! ( maaf pak atau bu)
Excuse me, could you help me, please? (permisi, bisa tolong saya,
tolong?)
Excuse me madam, I seemed to be lost. (permisi nona, sepertinya saya
tersesat)
May I ask you a minute sir / mom? (boleh aku bertanya pak/bu?)
Sorry for bothering you sir / mom ! ( maaf mengganggu anda Pak/Bu)
Sorry, I am not from around here. (maaf aku bukan dari sekitar sini)
I am sorry to interrupt you, but… (maaf mengganggu, tapi...)
I am new here. (saya baru disini)
I’m lost. (saya tersesat)
I am sorry. (maaf)
b. Asking Direction
After greetings, we can begin asking for directions using modal auxiliary (could,
would, dll), information questions (where, what, which, how), or interrogative
sentence (is it…, do I…).
( setelah menyampaikan greetings atau salam, kita bisa memulai menanyakan
arah dengan menggunakan modal auxiliary, information question, or
interrogative sentence)

Example :
Could you tell me how to get to …? (bisakah anda memberitahu
saya bagaimana agar sampai ke..?)
Could you tell me where the … is? (bisakah anda memberitahu
saya dimana...?)
Would you give me directions to go to …? (apakah anda bisa
memberi saya araah untuk pergi ke..?)
Can you direct me to …? (dapatkah anda mengarahkan saya ke..?)
Would you show me the way to …? (bisa tunjukkan jalan
kesana...?)
May I ask you the way to …? (bolehkah saya meminta anda cara
untuk..?)
Can you show me the … on the map? (bisakah kau tunjukkan
padaku...pada peta?)
I’m looking for …. Would you give me direction to get it? (aku
mencari... apakah anda bisa memberi saya arah untuk
mendapatkannya?)

ke....dari...?)
Which is the best way to …? (mana cara terbaik untuk...?)
What’s the best way to get to …? (apa cara terbaik untuk sampai
ke...?)
What’s the quickest way to get to …? (apa cara tercepat untuk sampai
ke.....)
What’s the easiest way to get to the …? (apa cara termudah untuk
sampai ke...?)
Where are you exactly? (dimana anda sebenarnya?)
Interrogative Sentence (is it…, do I…)
Example :
Is it the right way to / for …? (apakah itu cara yang benar untuk...?)
Is there a … around here / near hear? (apakah anda...sekitar sini/dekat
mendengar?)
Do you know where the … is? (kau tahu di mana...?)
Do you have a map to …? (apakah anda memiliki peta untuk...?)
Are we on the right road for …? (apakah kita dijalan yang benar

Am I in the right place to go …? How can I get there? (apakah aku di
tempat yang benar untuk pergi...? bagaimana aku bisa ke sana?)
Giving Directions
Untuk menjawab atau memberikan arah (giving directions), kita bisa
gunakan cara di bawah ini:
Jika tidak tahu arahnya, gunakan ungkapan di bawah:
I am sorry, I don’t know the road of … (mohon maaf, saya tidak
tahu jalan ke …)
I couldn’t show you the way to ... (saya tidak bisa menunjukkan
jalan ke …)
I couldn’t help you to get … because I live here just now. (saya
tidak bisa membantu anda untuk menemukan … karena saya baru
tinggal di sini)
I am stranger here. (saya orang asing di sini)
Lita : I am trying to find a bookshop sir. Could you show me the way to get that?
(Saya sedang mencari toko buku pak. Bisakah anda menunjukkan jalannya?
Mr. Alex : Yes, of course! Start from this, you have to go straight until you find T
junction. Then turn right and follow the street. The bookshop is on your left side, in front of
the bank.
(Tentu! Dari tempat ini, anda harus berjalan lurus sampai anda menemukan pertigaan.
Kemudian belok kanan dan ikuti jalannya. Toko buku berada disebelah kiri anda tepatnya di
depan bank.)
