“TechSmith is considered

TechSmith
A Homegrown Global IT Success
When Bill Hamilton co-founded TechSmith in 1987,
the picture of success was of a company that would
happily employ 20 people and develop a few software
products. What has transpired in the past 23 years has
exceeded Hamilton’s wildest expectations. TechSmith
has evolved into the world’s leading provider of screen
capture and screen recording software and the employee
count now stands at 205 – and growing. Today, TechSmith
is considered the “poster child” for the greater Lansing
region’s increased presence in the global IT industry.
Like most start-ups, the TechSmith team survived
the first few years and paid the bills through consulting
contracts. But, Hamilton and his team dreamed of making
a mark in software development. The big breakthrough
occurred in 1991, with the launch of Snagit®, which
quickly became a word-of-mouth wonder, and its use for
screen capture and editing spread rapidly. Today, there
are more than seven million Snagit users worldwide.

A Message from the President

Making our Mark in IT
When we look at the rapid pace of changes in technology and the growth of the global Information Technology (IT) industry,
January

thoughts inevitably center on technology giants like Microsoft, Apple and Google. If there was an IT success story to be told, most
of us probably thought it had to be from places like Silicon Valley, Austin, TX, Boston or other high tech regions.
I find it interesting, however, that the lightening-fast changes in technology brought about by many of the aforementioned
companies and other IT giants are making it possible for a location like Lansing, Michigan to compete and grow our global
presence in technology related fields.
The cover story in this month’s FOCUS is a classic example. Over the past 23 years, TechSmith has quietly grown into a
world leader in screen capture and video recording programs. Many other companies in this region are also making their mark,
including Liquid Web, Sircon, Netvantage and Spartan Internet. In fact, there are now 300 IT companies in the tri-county region,
Tim Daman and the industry as a whole employs 9,000 people in the area.

Chamber Fights Prevailing Wage

Proposal in Delta Township
The government relations team of the Lansing Region-
al Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) has been working for
several weeks to defeat a proposal before the Delta Town-
ship Board of Trustees, which would establish a prevailing
wage policy for construction projects over $25,000.
“The prevailing wage proposal would be a job killer
in Delta Township or any other jurisdiction that adopts it,”
said Kristin Beltzer, LRCC senior vice president Govern-
ment Relations & Public Affairs.
Supporters of the prevailing wage believe such a
policy will protect jobs. Hard data suggests otherwise.
Passage of such an ordinance would likely have the oppo-
site effect of what backers intend, making construction
jobs even more scarce than they already are during these
difficult economic times.
LRCC opposes the prevailing wage proposal because
it will inflate overall wage and construction costs for proj-
ects in Delta Township. Testimony at a recent Township
Board meeting estimated that such an ordinance would
raise construction costs 10-15% for affected proj-
ects.
The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce is
encouraging its members and all interested parties to con-
tact Delta Township officials to show the strong opposition
to prevailing wage among the business community.
