RS232 to Eaton Leonard Interface (CB-EL1) v2.

RS232 to Eaton Leonard (CB-EL1) v2.0

for Advanced Tubular, Inc.
Overview
The RS232 to Eaton Leonard (CB-EL1) interface converts RS232 electrical signals to
levels compatible with Eaton Leonard tubing benders. This board is a low cost, better
functioning alternative to the EATON LEONARD PC TO VECTOR INTERFACE (ASSY NO
805757).

Original Bender Interface Design

In order to ensure electrical compatibility, both the input and output circuitry for
communicating with the bender originally found on the EATON LEONARD PC TO VECTOR
INTERFACE (ASSY NO 805757) has been preserved. The same implementation of level
shifter (7406N) and optocoupler (HCPL2731, which is a dual 6N139) has been used for
this portion of the interface.
While the connector for interfacing with the bender has been changed to the more-useful
RJ45, the original pinout has been maintained.

Changes From Original Version

• RS232 interface uses a MAX232-based design, requiring only a +5VDC supply,
instead of the a MC1488/MC1489 design which required +15/-15/+5VDC supply.
• LEDs indicating power, transmission and reception of data (TX, RX), and status of
RTS and CTS lines. Labeling is from the perspective of the device attached to the
RS232 port.
• Current reversal protection, so that if power is connected backwards the board will
simply fail to power on without damaging components.
• Screw terminals for power connection.
• Dual optocoupler (HCPL2731) to reduce size and simplify design.
• Physically smaller board, 1/3rd the size of the original (6 in2 vs. 18 in2).
• RJ45 connectors for RS232 and bender connections (bender connection retains
original pinout).
• Branded for Advanced Tubular, Inc.
• Jumper pack allows selection of board function, allowing use in a Measuring Center
or Bender. This is similar to the function of JP5 on the EATON LEONARD PC TO
VECTOR INTERFACE (ASSY NO 805757).

Jumpers
In the center of the RS232 to Eaton Leonard (CB-EL1) interface are four jumpers used to
configure the board for use in either a Measuring Center (MC) or Bender (BND). All four
jumpers must be moved into either the MC or BND column to configure the board.
(Note that when the board is configured for Measuring Center (MC) and is not connected
to a Bender via the EL interface, the RX LED will remain lit.)

Loopback Test
Using a loopback adapter and a special configuration of the jumpers, the full function of
the send and receive circuits in RS232 to Eaton Leonard (CB-EL1) interface can be
validated. Perform the following steps:

1. Connect 5VDC power.

2. Connect the board via RS232 to a PC running serial port test software.
3. Connect a loopback adapter to the connector labeled EL.
4. Move the upper two jumpers to the MC position and the lower two to the BND
position.
5. Test the board as a typical loopback.
6. Move the upper two jumpers to the BND position and the lower two to the MC
position.
7. Test the board as a typical loopback.
8. If all loopback tests pass as expected, the board passes the basic tests for
function in either configuration.

RoHS Compliance
Except on boards specifically marked, all components and materials used in the RS232
to Eaton Leonard Interface (CB-EL1) comply with European Union directive 2002/95/EC,
also known as the RoHS Directive.
The RoHS compliance of the components used is based upon evidence from the
distributors and manufacturers of the individual components who have indicated that the
part numbers are in compliance with the RoHS Directive. Reasonable steps have been
taken to confirm distributors’ and manufacturers statements regarding the absence of
the restricted substances in order to support the claim of compliance.
