Derek  Powell  is  a  Senior  Learning  Consultant  with  Sedona  Learning  Solutions.  He  has  significant  
experience  leading  Training,  Instructional  Design  and  eLearning  initiatives  for  EMR  (MEDITECH,  Cerner)  
implementations.  He  has  functioned  in  a  Project  Management  role  with  experience  directing  LMS  
implementations  and  comprehensive  MEDITECH  curriculum  projects.  Derek  holds  a  BS  in  Education  from  
Taylor  University  (Indiana)  and  an  MBA  from  Trinity  College  Dublin  (Ireland).  
 
Brenda  Kulhanek,  PhD,  RN,  CPHIMS  has  been  involved  in  clinical  informatics  for  over  15  years  in  a  variety  
of  roles  that  have  included  clinical  analyst,  project  manager,  clinical  documentation  manager,  nursing  
informatics  specialist,  and  implementation  specialist.  She  has  lead  projects  related  to  EMR  configuration,  
implementation,  maintenance,  and  training  development  in  diverse  healthcare  environments  for  both  
clinical  and  business  applications.  She  has  presented  at  ANIA-­‐Caring  and  other  national  and  international  
conferences  on  topics  such  as  EMR  system  adoption  and  end  user  training,  and  is  co-­‐author  of  the  book  
“Ready  for  the  EMR?”    Dr.  Kulhanek  holds  a  PhD  in  Training  &  Performance  Improvement  and  currently  
works  as  an  informatics  and  training  consultant.  She  is  an  active  member  of  HIMSS,  ANIA-­‐Caring,  and  
ASTD.      
 
Bruno  Neal,  MS,  CPLP,  Instructional  Multimedia  Designer  for  Sedona  Learning  Solutions,  is  an  author,  
Instructional  Systems  Designer,  and  a  Training  and  Performance  Improvement  Specialist.  He  has  been  
appointed  to  the  2010  Board  of  Examiners  for  the  Malcolm  Baldrige  National  Quality  Award  and  2011  
ASTD  BEST  Award.  Mr.  Neal  was  awarded  with  the  highly  esteemed  American  Society  of  Training  and  
Development  BEST  Award.  Mr.  Neal  also  serves  on  the  panel  of  columnists  for  T+D  (Training  and  
Development)  Magazine.  He  is  the  author  of  the  following  articles:  “Stop  Following  Joe  Around!  (an  
article  about  On-­‐The-­‐Job  Coaching  –  OJC),  Heroes  and  Sidekicks  (an  article  about  the  partnership

702  -­‐  Thinking  Outside  of  the  Box  with  NPR  Report  Writer  
Come  join  us  as  we  demonstrate  how  to  use  the  NPR  Report  Writer  to  do  things  that  you  never  thought  
were  possible.    We  will  take  the  Report  Writer  to  new  levels  while  learning  more  about  standard  NPR  
features,  macros,  and  magic  programming  concepts.  
 
Topics  include:  
• Utilize  multiple  Indexes  for  report  selection  in  a  single  report  
• Create  one  report  that  can  be  formatted  multiple  ways  upon  execution  
• Leverage  the  NPR  Report  Writer  to  generate  and  send  multiple  files  via  FTP  
• Upload  text  files  from  your  PC  for  display  within  your  report  
• Launch  Windows  applications  from  MEDITECH

703  -­‐  PHA  Report  Writing  
Learn  how  to  write  pharmacy  reports  that  include  administration  data,  laboratory  data  and  present  the  
new  V2  allergies  (including  the  comments).    We  will  show  you  how  to  write  a  custom  version  of  the  
Medication  Administration  report.    We  will  also  discuss  how  to  include  administration  data  on  a  printed  
MAR  that  you  can  schedule  as  a  backup  for  downtime.  
 
This  workshop  is  for  MAGIC,  C/S,  and  6.0  users.

Instructor:    Jim  Fahnestock  is  a  programmer  in  the  Report  Writer  Group  at  Iatric  Systems.    Prior  to  joining  
Iatric  Systems  in  2002,  Jim  was  a  MEDITECH  Applications  Analyst  and  NPR  Report  Writer  at  Catholic  
Health  Initiatives  (CHI).    At  CHI,  he  supported  clinical  applications  with  a  focus  on  pharmacy,  lab  and  
radiology.    Jim  is  one  of  Iatric  Systems’  NPR  Report  Writer  trainers  that  has  taught  more  than  60  report  
writer  classes  in  the  US  and  Canada.

This  workshop  will  present  the  fundamentals  of  the  MAGIC  programming  language  as  needed  for  
advanced  report  writing.

Instructor:    Joe  Cocuzzo  is  the  Vice  President  of  the  NPR  group  at  Iatric  Systems.    Since  2000  he  has  
headed  the  NPR  Group  at  Iatric  Systems,  currently  21  strong,  which  provides  NPR  Report  Writing,  CDS  
Attribute  and  Rule  writing,  Proration  rule  assistance,  and  on-­‐site  training  to  MEDITECH  hospitals  in  the  
US,  Canada,  and  the  UK.    Prior  to  joining  Iatric  Systems,  Joe  was  a  Senior  Programmer-­‐Analyst  at  
Newton-­‐Wellesley  Hospital  in  Newton,  MA  from  1992-­‐2000  and  before  that  he  was  an  Applications  
Consultant  at  MEDITECH.

We  will  delve  into  the  world  of  HL7  standards;  both  in  terms  of  HL7  today  and  what  can  be  expected  
tomorrow.    We  will  discuss  the  statement,  “If  you’ve  seen  one  HL7  interface,  you’ve  seen  one.”

Instructor:    Ken  Hoffman,  Vice  President  of  Interfaces/Integration,  Iatric  Systems,  has  worked  as  a  
healthcare  IT  professional  for  over  16  years  and  is  well  known  for  his  ability  to  effectively  integrate  
systems.    He  actively  seeks  to  use  proven  technology,  industry  standards  and  strategies  to  achieve  client  
goals.    Ken  spent  six  years  working  in  hospital  IT,  where  he  gained  his  technical  and  application  
experience.    He  has  extensive  knowledge  of  clinical,  administrative  and  financial  processes.    This  
understanding  together  with  his  technical  expertise  allow  Ken  to  effectively  consult  with  staff  from  every  
facet  of  healthcare  -­‐  from  clinicians  to  IS  staff  to  senior  management  -­‐  on  the  benefits  that  can  be  
realized  by  integrating  previously  "stand-­‐alone"  software  solutions  into  hospitals'  HIS  systems.    Ken  
received  his  formal  education  in  programming  and  technical  design  from  Northern  Illinois  University  and  
spent  seven  years  supporting  the  US  Navy  SEAL  Teams  where  he  received  training  on  team  building.  
 
 
 
 
 
706  -­‐  Integration  and  Adoption  using  the  Physician  Care  Manager  in  6.0  
Healthcare  Organizations  continue  to  struggle  with  Physician  adoption  of  electronic  documentation  and  
order  entry.  This  presentation  will  outline  how  Ontario  Shores  Centre  for  Mental  Health  Sciences,  a  330  
bed  tertiary  mental  health  hospital,  was  able  to  implement  and  facilitate  physician  adoption  of  
electronic  documentation  and  order  entry  in  conjunction  with  the  implementation  of  a  fully  integrated  
electronic  health  record  over  a  short  period  of  time.  We  will  provide  an  interactive  instructional  session  
on  building  documentation  templates  in  PCM,  building  order  sets  and  integrating  physician  documented  
information  into  the  EMR.

Instructors:    Alison  MacDonald  &  Erin  Anstey  are  the  Clinical  Education  Leaders  in  the  Clinical  Informatics  
Department  at  the  Ontario  Shores  Centre  for  Mental  Health  Sciences  in  Whitby,  Ontario.  Both  studied  
their  Master  in  Nursing  with  a  focus  in  Informatics  at  the  University  of  Toronto.  Alison  and  Erin  led  the  
development,  build  and  education  for  the  6.0  PCM/CPOE  implementation  at  Ontario  Shores.  
 
Dr.  Ilan  Fischler  joined  Ontario  Shores  Centre  for  Mental  Health  Sciences  (Ontario  Shores)  in  July  2007  as  
a  staff  psychiatrist  in  the  Special  Services  Program.  He  is  currently  the  Interim  Physician-­‐in-­‐Chief  as  well  
as  the  Physician  Champion,  Project  EASIER,  helping  to  bring  integrated  electronic  health  records  to  
Ontario  Shores.  Some  of  his  other  internal  positions  at  Ontario  Shores  have  included  Chair,  Clinical  
Information  Committee,  Chair,  Physician  Advisory  Group,  Member,  Research  Ethics  Board  and  Secretary,  
Medical  Staff  Association.  Dr.  Fischler  completed  his  training  in  medicine  and  psychiatry  at  the  University  
of  Toronto.  Some  of  his  current  professional  associations  include  membership  in  the  American  
Association  for  Geriatric  Psychiatry  and  Canadian  Academy  of  Geriatric  Psychiatry.    
 
 
 
 
 
707  -­‐  SQL  Tips  and  Best  Practices  for  MEDITECH’s  DR  
Implementing  and  managing  your  MEDITECH  Data  Repository  (DR)  can  be  overwhelming.  Establishing  
standards  is  key  to  maintaining  efficient/organized  data  and  report  development  environment.    We  will  
help  you  get  started  with  some  best  practices  and  SQL  development  tips  that  will  aid  you  in  writing  
efficient  T-­‐SQL  code,  building  indexes,  creating  datamarts  and  managing  your  DR  more  effectively.    
 
In  the  long  run,  taking  the  time  to  establish  overall  naming  conventions  and  organize  your  stored  
procedures  can  alleviate  confusion  and  improve  productivity.    Finding  the  right  data  can  be  a  challenge.  
We’ll  go  over  the  tools  and  methods  we  use  to  determine  the  best  tables  to  use.  We’ll  teach  you  how  to  
easily  combine  data  from  multiple  MEDITECH  modules,  as  well  as  things  to  consider  when  joining  these  
tables.  We  will  cover  some  of  the  functions  we  use  to  make  certain  calculations  or  conversions  easier.    
We  will  also  go  over  creating  indexes  and  managing  those  indexes,  which  will  help  you  write  efficient  
code.  
 
This  session  will  benefit  both  new  and  established  DR  customers  whether  you  are  looking  to  learn  more  
about  custom  report  development,  routine  maintenance,  or  data  validation  for  your  DR.  You  will  get  a  
good  foundation  of  how  to  manage  and  use  your  DR  so  that  you  will  be  well  on  your  way  to  providing  
valuable  reports  for  your  organization.

Instructor:    Jamie  Gerardo  spent  six  years  at  Hays  Medical  Center  (MEDITCH  C/S)  in  the  IT  and  Decision  
Support  Departments.    She  helped  implement  and  support  the  MIS,  OE,  and  BAR  applications,  and  
specialized  in  NPR  report  development.    Jamie  implemented  MEDITECH’s  DR  at  Hays  Medical  Center  in  
2005  and  its  DR  reporting  is  now  an  integral  part  of  daily  operations.  Jamie  brought  her  combination  of  
MEDITECH  knowledge  and  healthcare  process  experience  to  Acmeware  Inc.  in  2008.    Jamie  is  a  Microsoft  
certified  Technical  Specialist  in  Business  Intelligence.  
708  -­‐  Key  Strategies  to  Enhance  the  Patient  Experience  through  Effective  Use  of  the  EHR  
PatientBridge  is  an  integrated  solution  that  supports  your  organization’s  effective  use  of  the  EHR  for  key  
strategies  such  as  Patient  Centered  Medical  Home,  Meaningful  Use,  and  patient  experience.    It  provides

Instructor:    Laurence  H.  Baker,  Ph.D.,  a  clinical  psychologist,  provides  training,  coaching,  and  
consultation  in  communication  and  leadership  in  health  care.    He  is  a  clinical  Associate  Professor  of  
Medicine  at  the  Oregon  Health  and  Sciences  University,  the  Western  Regional  Consultant  for  the  Institute  
for  Healthcare  Communication,  a  Consultant  to  the  National  Health  Service  in  the  United  Kingdom,  and  
faculty  for  the  Institute  for  Healthcare  Improvement.  
 
He  consults  with  health  care  organizations  to  create  solutions  to  the  challenges  of  communication  
between,  doctors,  staff,  and  patients  and  has  24  years  of  clinical  experience  in  primary  care  clinics.    
Consulting  with  health  systems  around  the  world  as  they  adopt  the  Electronic  Health  Record  (EHR),  Dr.  
Baker  led  the  development  of  PatientBridge,  an  organizational  learning  system  that  supports  clinicians  
using  communication  techniques  for  efficient  and  effect  use  of  the  EHR  with  patients.  
 
Dr.  Baker  conducts  research  and  publishes  on  communication,  the  doctor  –  patient  relationship,  and  the  
Electronic  Health  Record.    Recent  articles  include,  “Adoption  of  EHR  Does  Not  Equal  Implementation:

803  -­‐  PHA  Clinical  Rules  and  NPR  –  Magic/Client  Server  5.6  and  Beyond  …  
This  workshop,  intended  for  the  beginner  to  intermediate  level,  will  teach  you  about  the  world  of  
Clinical  Rules.  The  basic  set-­‐up  of  both  LINE  and  NPR  styles  of  writing  will  be  covered.  And  we  will  look  at  
NUR/eMAR  rules  too.    Advanced  rules  will  also  cover  macro  and  NPR  fragment  calls  to  create  pop-­‐ups  
for  end  users.  
 
PHA-­‐specific  NPR  reports  and  fragments  will  be  covered  including,  but  not  limited  to  Meaningful  Use  
Metrics,  labels,  MAR’s,  custom  Refill  Lists,  PHA  Profiles,  Pt  Views,  PHA  Custom  Keywords,  etc.

Instructor:    Dr.  Kevin  McConnell  has  roughly  22  years  of  relevant  professional  experience  including  over  
14  years  of  experience  as  a  MEDITECH  consultant,  project  manager,  and  application  specialist  in  
healthcare  system  implementation/assessments  and  is  currently  an  Associate  Partner  with  Santa  Rosa  
Consulting.    Dr.  McConnell  specializes  in  the  implementation  and  support  of  MEDITECH’s  Advanced  
Clinical  Applications  with  a  particular  emphasis  on  the  Pharmacy  and  Order  Management  modules,  and  
related  interfaces/applications.  Areas  of  expertise  include  pre  and  post  implementation  assessments,  
developing  implementation  and  training  plans,  revenue  cycle,  coordinating  process  and  departmental

804  -­‐  NPR  Report  Writing  for  the  Nursing  Module  
NUR/PCS  is  a  challenging  application  for  report  writing.  Documentation  is  stored  per  query  and  time  
documented,  and  you  have  edits,  undo’s  and  multiple  queries  (and  repeat  queries  in  C/S).  
 
This  workshop  will  show  you  how  to  write  NPR  reports  to  get  the  last  time  documented,  post  edit,  
skipping  undo’s  or  get  the  documentation  for  a  date/time  range  (post  edit/skip  undo).    For  extra  credit  
we  will  show  how  to  get  the  latest  instance  of  documentation  across  multiple  interventions.      
Additionally,  we  will  show  how  to  use  the  standard  MIS.SCREEN.print  program  (MAGIC)  or  a  custom  
variant  or  a  generic  C/S  report  that  uses  the  MIS  assessment  dictionary  to  print  out  nursing  
documentation  without  hard-­‐coding  query  mnemonics.

If  you  have  MEDITECH’s  Data  Repository  (DR),  you  already  have  all  the  tools  you  need  to  successfully  
develop  a  Business  Intelligence  (BI)  environment  at  your  facility.    Jump-­‐start  your  BI  functionality  with  
Microsoft  SQL  Server  2008  Reporting  Services  (SSRS)  using  Report  Models  and  the  easy-­‐to-­‐use  Report  
Designer  tool.    This  ad-­‐hoc  query  tool  allows  non-­‐technical  end  users  to  develop  reports  on  the  fly  using  
a  drag  and  drop,  web-­‐based  reporting  tool  that  is  intuitive,  flexible,  and  requires  minimal  knowledge  of  
the  underlying  database  structures  and  relationships.  
 
This  half-­‐day  workshop  will  demonstrate  the  ease  of  use  and  powerful  report  capabilities  of  SSRS’s  
Report  Models.    Efficient  BI  reporting  starts  with  well-­‐designed  SQL  Report  Models.  We  will  review  how  
raw  MEDITECH  DR  data  is  transformed  into  the  SSRS  Report  Models  which  are  the  foundation  on  which  
Report  Builder  3.0  functionality  resides.    We  will  review  how  to  build  and  deploy  models  using  the  
Model  Designer,  then  dynamically  create,  execute  and  manage  reports.  We  will  also  educate  you  on  
how  the  Report  Builder  tool  allows  non-­‐technical  staff  to  develop,  enter  formatting  and  layout  features,  
and  deploy  web-­‐based  reporting  solutions  without  involving  the  IT  department.  Finally,  we  will  discuss  
how  easy  it  is  to  implement  and  maintain  secure  access  to  reports  using  your  Active  Directories  groups  
and  the  SSRS  Report  Manager.

Repository  (DR)  application.  Under  Glen’s  guidance,  Acmeware  has  earned  a  reputation  as  a  leader  in  DR  
consulting  field  and  is  recognized  for  developing  innovative  DR-­‐based  reporting,  custom  application,  and  
interfacing  solutions.    He  has  also  developed  a  DR  report  writing  training  program  that  has  been  
attended  by  participants  from  dozens  of  DR  sites.  Glen  has  an  undergraduate  degree  in  Engineering  and  
Economics  from  Trinity  College  and  graduate  degrees  in  Biomedical  Engineering  and  in  Finance  from

808  -­‐  Grant  Writing:    Tips  for  Success  
This  session  will  include  a  presentation  on  grant  writing  tips,  interactive  discussion  about  miscellaneous  
topics  involved  with  grant  writing,  and  instruction  on  how  to  access  websites  used  for  finding  grants  and  
applying  for  funding.  Brief  information  on  Citizen  Memorial  Healthcare’s  successful  grant  applications  
and  strong  points  of  those  applications  will  be  presented.  Attendees  will  be  asked  to  bring  ideas  for  
grants  and  strategies  will  be  discussed  among  the  group  as  well  as  questions  regarding  topics  typically  
required  for  grants.

Instructor:    Susan  Sanders  has  been  employed  by  the  Citizen  Memorial  Healthcare  (CMH)  organization  
for  seven  years.  Past  positions  included  registered,  certified  pharmacy  technician  in  the  inpatient  
pharmacy  and  management  of  the  outpatient  pharmacy  operated  by  CMH.  Ms.  Sanders  transferred  to  
the  role  of  Telehealth  Coordinator  in  2010.    
 
Susan  Sanders  graduated  from  Missouri  State  University,  Magna  Cum  Laude  in  the  Honors  College,  with  
a  Bachelor  of  Science  in  Gerontology,  Minor  in  Psychology,  and  emphasis  in  Biomedical  Sciences.  Ms.  
Sanders  is  currently  pursuing  a  Master  in  Business  Administration  with  a  concentration  in  Health  Care  
Administration.    
 
During  her  time  as  CMH  Telehealth  Coordinator,  Ms  Sanders  has  acted  as  grants  administrator  for  three  
grants  pertaining  to  telehealth.  Activities  of  those  grants  surround  a  telehealth  expansion  to  17  video  
conferencing  sites  and  tele-­‐diagnostics  programming  will  fully  integrated  imaging  and  diagnostic  
software  and  equipment.    Ms.  Sanders  has  also  successfully  written  grants  for  a  telepharmacy  grant,  
telehealth  expansion,  and  new  clinical  services  for  rural  health  clinics.
