CONFESSION OF SINS
lmighty and Most Merciful Father, you.
we come before You, acknowledg-
ing our sins, our shortcomings, and
our breaking of our Covenant with You.
MINISTER: This is a new season where we honor the vision of Rev. Dr. Kenneth B. Smith, the tenacity
of Rev. Willie B. Jameson, the boldness of Rev. Reuben Sheares II, the creavity of Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A.
Wright, Jr., the standard of excellence presented by Rev. Barbara J. Allen and the musical genius of Mr.
Jeffrey P. Radford.
MINISTER: We invite the enre village, naon and community to return home and celebrate with us
during this year, this new season.
MINISTER: All debts are forgiven this year! All grudges are forgoen. All loans are paid in full. We all
stand equal at the foot of the cross, thanking Jesus for His forgiveness and love. This is a new season.
MINISTER: This is a new season. This is the year of Jubilee! This is a year of celebraon. This is a year
of sacred reflecon. This is a year of chains being broken, of dreams being realized and of hope being
restored to the hopeless.
ALL: This is the year! This is the year! This is God’s year! This is our year! This is the year of Jubilee!
“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil and aer fasng forty days and
forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these
stones to become loaves of bread.” Mahew 4:1-3
Fasng has been used throughout the ages to prepare the people of God for the great things God has in store
for them. As we pray through this season of transion and Divine imaginaon, I am calling, I am asking, I am
requesng that the enre church become involved in some form of prayer and fasng. The following are several
types of fasts that can be used to develop spiritual power and clarity.
LENTEN FAST
March 28 – April 2 Eat only one meal a day
April 3 – April 9 Drink only juices, water and/or tea
April 10 – April 16 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.
April 17 – April 23 Slowly begin to add meat to your diet
Fast #2 – The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians, he
asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, could fast, eang only fruits and
vegetables so they would be prepared to confront the Babylonian king.
March 9 – March 19 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.
March 20 - March 27 Eat only two meals a day before 6 p.m.
March 28 – April 2 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.
April 3 – April 9 Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added.
April 10 – April 16 Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added
April 17 – April 23 Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m.
Please consult your doctor before proceeding with fasng. If you take medicaon or have any parcular ailment, it
is important to first communicate with your physician.
It was this past week, when one of our dedicated Deacons asked me, “Why do you preach the same
message at all three services?” It dawned on me, I “understood” the why, but my friend “assumed” the
why. I shared with my friend that we have three different services with three different demographics:
churched, un-churched, and post-churched parishioners. I preach the same message to lay the
groundwork for the enre congregaon to learn, reflect, and study from the same sheet of music.
My Deacon friend thanked me and said, “I figured as much, but unl you stated it, I could not know
definively.”
I recognize this is a departure for some, since our Pastor Emeritus, Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.,
preached three different messages each Sunday; I might add, because of Dr. Wright’s brilliance. He is
one of the few ministers in the country who preached three different messages on Sunday during his
tenure as pastor.
Those who have been at Trinity prior to the construcon of the 400 building remember the preaching of
mulple messages was an evoluon in ministry, not a revoluon. At one point during our ministry, only
one message was preached and when Trinity began to broadcast on television, mulple messages were
instuted. I say all of this just to reiterate the goal of being on one accord.
As we move through this year of Jubilee, let us remember, different is NOT deficient.
Below is informaon for a new docu-movie, Men Ain’t Boys, which debuts in Chicago on
Thursday, March 17, 7:15 p.m. at the ICE Theater, 210 W. 87th St. Our members, Deacon Larry
Merrills, Tyrone Jackson, Rudolph Brown, Melvin Thompson, Kyle Strong, Durell James and
Anthony Fleming are among the men interviewed in the documentary. Informaon about the
movie and to purchase ckets is below.
Synopsis: At a me when African American men are oen depicted poorly throughout
mainstream media Tyler New Media breaks that trend with Men Ain't Boys. The film offers
a thought-provoking look at issues such as stereotypes surrounding manhood, the results
of effecve fatherhood and the requirements for maintaining lasng love, relaonships and
marriages. Men Ain't Boys provides a blueprint for men, women and children to learn how
real men live and how real men love. Limited seang is available - early purchase is strongly
suggested! We do expect a sellout!
Special Offer: Your $15.00 cket purchase includes a copy of the Men Ain't Boys DVD which

SERMON NOTES
I
n the Gospel reading from Mahew, wherein Jesus was preaching to 5,000 people and dusk was
starng to set in, supper was long overdue, stomachs were starng to growl, and all there was to eat
were two fish and five loaves of bread. The disciples were aware of the predicament. They said to
Jesus, in effect, “This is a scky situaon, and we can’t do anything about it, anyway. Let’s take what we
have gathered and go away and eat!”
By nature, there is some of that mentality in all of us. Whenever God places us in a situaon that
challenges us to use our me and talent, and to invest some of ourselves in finding a soluon to
someone’s problem or need, our first response is to remove ourselves from the problem.
Mahew, the one who wrote the account of the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand, was an
STEWARDSHIP
eyewitness to the event. Can you imagine the joyful sasfacon…the upli in faith Mahew (…they
trusted and had the joy and sasfacon that comes with being a partner with Jesus? A partner in his
ministry of love and service) experienced when he was able to write, “But everyone ate, and there was
more than enough. They gathered twelve baskets full of leovers!”
Do you think there could be any symbolic significance to the fact that there were twelve baskets full - one
for each disciple, and enough to sasfy their needs for days to come; all because they trusted God and had
the joy and sasfacon that comes with being a partner with Jesus - A partner in his ministry of love and
service?
For that maer, some of the most red, worn out at mes, almost burnt out disciples at every church have
become that way because they have a difficult me saying “no” when our Lord calls them to join hands
with Him in using their me and talent to serve their church. Tired? Yes! Weary? Yes! But then, you should
be let in on a lile secret – you should see their “baskets”!
First Fruits - Giving God the first of all that God has given us, with praise and thanksgiving.
As we celebrate our 50th year as a church, we set a goal of aaining 500 new members as electronic givers, those
that commit to give of their first fruits.
In the coming weeks we will be including addional informaon in the bullen, and providing other resources to
encourage and inform you. To assist you in making this important commitment to Trinity, and answer any quesons
you might have, we have tables set up in the Narthex and Atrium for your convenience.
