STRATEGI 1: GAGASAN POKOK

 Pada bagian Reading di pastikan bahwa di setiap teks yang

tersedia selalu ada pertanyaan atau soal yang menanyakan
tentang gagasan utama (main idea) bacaan atau paragraf.
 Pertanyaan seperti ini dapat muncul dalam berbagai variasi
kata, sekalipun dengan maksud yang sama.
 Bacaan dalam tes TOEFL biasanya ditulis dengan cara
tradisional seperti yang pernah anda ketahui di SMP atau
SMA mengenai Gagasan Utama dari teks atau paragraf,
sehingga memudahkan Anda menemukan jawaban untuk
pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang diberikan.
 Gagasan Utama ini, jawabannya biasanya termuat di awal
paragraf atau disebut deduktif atau bila di awal paragraf
(untuk gagasan utama teks) atau di awal kalimat (untuk
gagasan utama suatu paragraf) tidak ada, maka sudah
dipastikan Gagasan Utamanya berada di akhir paragraf atau
disebut Induktif.

Contoh pertanyaan yang sering muncul untuk mencari tahu

akan Main Idea, diantaranya:

INGAT! Untuk menjawab pertanyaan diatas, anda tidak

usah terlalu repot untuk membaca keseluruhan teks, tapi
langsung saja baca awal dan akhir paragraf atau kalimat dari teks
atau paragraf dan lakukan skimming atau scanning untuk
mengonfirmasi.
Setiap pilihan jawaban dari pertanyaan pasti bervariasi, namun
yang biasanya menjawab jenis-jenis pertanyaan di atas adalah
seperti berikut:

Jawaban yang tepat untuk pertanyaan-pertanyaan main

idea, main topic, atau main purposes secara tepat menyimpulkan
main points atau titik utama dari suatu teks; Jawabannya
cenderung lebih luas atau general dari informasi pendukung atau
informasi detail, tetapi tidak terlalu general keluar dari cakupan
teks yang disediakan.

Jawaban yang tidak tepat dari tipe pertanyaan main

idea mempunyai karakteristik sebagai berikut:
1. Jawabannya terlalu spesifik.
2. Jawabannya terlalu umum atau general.
3. Jawabannya sama sekali tidak menyangkut topik atau
diluar informasi dari teks.
4. Jawabannya berkebalikan dari informasi yang terdapat
dalam teks.

Cara Mencari Jawaban

 Jawaban untuk pertanyaan ini secara umum dapat
ditemukan di Jawaban bagian pertama tiap paragraf.

Cara Menjawab Pertanyaan

1. Baca baris pertama dalam masing-masing paragraf.
2. Cari sebuah tema atau gagasan umum dalam baris
pertama.
3. Lihat sekilas bacaan untuk mengecek apakah Anda
benar-benar telah menemukan topik/gagasan pokok.
4. Eliminasi keberadaan jawaban-jawaban yang tidak
sesuai dan
5. pilih jawaban terbaik dari pilihan yang tersisa.

Contoh soal 1:
Passage 1
There are two main types of cell division. Most cells are
produced by a process called mitosis. In mitosis, a cell divides
and forms two identical daughter cells, each with an identical
number of chromosomes. Most one-celled creatures reproduce
by this method, as do most of the cells in multicelled plants and
animals. Sex cells, however, are formed in a special type of cell
division called meiosis. This process reduces the number of
chromosomes in a sex cell to half the number found in other

Jawaban yang tepat dari pertanyaan diatas adalah opsi

(B), karena mencakup keseluruhan teks, menyiratkan There are
two main types of cell division (terdapat dua tipe divisi sel).
Untuk opsi (A) terlalu spesifik tidak mewakili keseluruhan teks,
lihat saja kalimat awal There are two main types of cell division,
berarti jawabannya harus mewakili kedua tipe sel, sedangkan
opsi (B) hanya menyebutkan metode saja padahal teksnya tidak
hanya membahas metode, tapi secara keseluruhan tentang dua
tipe sel. Opsi (C) juga dianggap salah karena tidak sesuai dengan
informasi yang berada pada teks. Opsi (C) menyebut meiosis
sebagai proses yang menghasilkan multiple sel, padahal
informasi di teks menyebutkan bahwa meiosis hanya
menghasilkan single cell (sel tunggal).

Contoh Soal 2:
The passage:
In the philosophy of John Dewey, a sharp distinction is
made between "intelligence" and "reasoning". According to
Dewey, intelligence is the only absolute way to achieve a
balance between realism and idealism, between practicality and
wisdom of life. Intelligence involves "interacting with other
things and knowing them," while reasoning is merely the act of
an observer, "... a mindthat beholds or grasps objects outside the
world of thing.... "With reasoning, a level of mental certainty can

be achieved, but itis through intelligence that control is taken of

events that shape one's life.

The question:
What is the topic of this passage?
(A) The intelligence ofjohn Dewey
(B) Distinctions made by John Dewey
(C) Dewey’s ideas on the ability to reason

work

Kalimat pertama pada bacaan ini membahas sebuah

perbedaan antara gagasan "intelligence" (kecerdasaan) dan
"reasoning" (penalaran) dalam pandangan hidup John Dewey,
maka kemungkinan inilah topiknya. Cepat periksa bagian dari
kalimat dalam bacaan ini untuk memastikan bahwa topik yang
dibicarakan adalah fakta perbedaan antara "intelligence" dan
"reasoning". Kemudian, periksa setiap pilihan jawaban untuk
menentukan manakah yang paling sesuai.

Jawaban (A) hanya menyebutkan intelligence

(kecerdasan), sehingga ia bukan topiknya. Jawaban (B)
menyebutkan perbedaan yang John Dewey buat, tetapi tidak
mengatakan secara khusus apa jenis perbedaannya. Jawaban (C)

Nitrogen fixation is a process by which nitrogen is
continuously fed into biological circulation. In this process,
certainalgae and bacteria convert nitrogen into ammonia (NH3).

by plants. The opposite process of denitrification returns
nitrogen to the air. During the process of denitrification, bacteria
cause some of the nitrates from the soil to convert into gaseous
nitrogen or nitrous oxide (N2O). In this gaseous form, the
nitrogen returns to the atmosphere.The question:

Pembahasan Soal dan Jawaban

Pertanyaan ini menanyakan tentang judul terbaik untuk
bagian ini. Dalam bagian yang memiliki lebih dari satu paragraf,
Anda harus yakin untuk membaca kalimat pertama dari setiap
paragraf untuk menentukan subjek, topik, judul, atau gagasan
utama. Dalam contoh ini, kalimat pertama dari paragraf pertama
menunjukkan bahwa paragraf pertama membahas tentang proses
fiksasi nitrogen.

Jika Anda hanya melihat paragraf pertama, Anda

mungkin memilih jawaban yang salah (A), yang dapat jadi judul
yang baik untuk paragraf pertama saja. Kalimat pertama dari
paragraf kedua menunjukkan bahwa proses denitrification
(denitrifikasi) dibahas dalam paragraf kedua. Jawaban (C) juga
tidak benar, karena kembalinya nitrogen ke udara adalah proses

Passage 2 (Questions 3-4)

One identifying characteristic of minerals is their relative

hardness, which can be determined by scratching one mineral
with another. In this type of test, a harder mineral can scratch a
softer one, but a softer mineral is unable to scratch the harder
one. The Mohs' hardness scale is used to rank minerals
according to hardness. Ten minerals are listed in this scale,
ranging from talc with a hardness of 1 to diamond with a
hardness of 10. On this scale, quartz (number 7) is harder than
feldspar (number 6) and is therefore able to scratch it; however,
feldspar is unable to make a mark on quartz.

Passage 3 (Questions 5-6)

Hurricanes generally occur in the North Atlantic from May

through November, with the peak of the hurricane season in
September; only rarely will they occur from December through
April in that part of the ocean. The main reason for the
occurrence of hurricanes during this period is that the
temperature on the water's surface is at its warmest and the
humidity of the air is at its highest. Of the tropical storms that
occur each year in the North Atlantic, only about five, on the
