Our Mission: Strengthening Relationships, Building Community

Founded in 1970, the New York Center for Interpersonal Development (NYCID) is a not-for-
profit organization on Staten Island providing youth, community and professional
development programs, as well as dispute resolution services that educate and inform
the public about constructive problem-solving, effective communication and intercultural
awareness. We also operate a training institute to teach these skills to others.

Four decades ago we first opened our doors with The Rap Center on New Dorp Lane, a place
for young people to gather, explore personal issues and forge healthy relationships with
caring adults willing to provide support and guidance through very difficult times.

In 1982, NYCID broadened our scope of services and opened the Community Dispute
Resolution Center. With the training of volunteers in mediation and other methods of
conflict management, we began providing professional dispute resolution services to the
Staten Island community at large.

Over the years, NYCID has reaffirmed our commitment to supporting young people and
peacefully resolving conflicts. The years have seen us grow into the noteworthy and unique
service provider that we are today. Working not only with Staten Islanders but with residents
throughout New York City, our menu of programs and services has expanded to include:
school-based after school enrichment programs; a transfer high school; drop out prevention
services; a GED/career preparation program; numerous innovative mediation and conflict
management services; and dynamic trainings and professional development workshops.

Now in our 40th year, NYCID continues to value the cultivation of positive, respectful human
relationships and the strengthening of communities as fundamental to achieving a civil and
just society. It is towards this mission that NYCID, through our committed and talented staff,
volunteers, partners and supporters, dedicates itself each and every day.

We thank you for your continued support of our work and mission.

Youth & Community Development Programs
Olympus Academy: A joint venture between NYCID and the NYC Dept. of Education, Olympus Academy is a transfer High School in Canarsie,
Brooklyn, that offers over-aged and under-credited students an opportunity to earn their high school diploma by providing them with a rigorous
academic program, small class settings, tutoring, supportive counseling services, career preparation trainings and paid internships. Students
graduate prepared to participate in post-secondary education, meaningful work, healthy relationships and to be fully engaged in their community.
Young Adult Borough Center: In partnership with the NYC Dept. of Education, the YABC Program offers students in danger of dropping out a
chance to make up their credits and earn a traditional high school diploma by providing them with a rigorous academic program, tutoring, suppor-
tive counseling services, career preparation trainings and paid internships. The staff at NYCID’s YABC Program is dedicated to supporting our stu-
dents through graduation, helping them to develop the skills and tools needed to succeed both personally and professionally.
The ACE Program: Funded by the NYC Dept. of Youth and Community Development and the NYS Dept. of Labor, this program works with young
people, aged 17 - 21, who are out of school and need support and assistance to begin the next chapter of their lives. Young people in this program
are provided with GED classes, supportive counseling services, career preparation trainings & employment referrals.
After School Enrichment Programs: NYCID’s programs at McKee and Port Richmond H.S., P.S. 21, P.S. 30 and the Staten Island School of Civic
Leadership provide students with a multitude of academic, conflict resolution, arts and recreational classes, projects and workshops. Our pro-
grams feature strong partnerships with school administrators, teachers, counselors, parents and the community to provide comprehensive and
engaging services within a safe and nurturing environment.
Graduate, Prepare & Succeed (GPS): Port Richmond H.S. students participate in activities designed to improve their attendance and academic
performance. Core services provided by NYCID staff are academic support, attendance outreach, guidance counseling and family involvement.

Community Dispute Resolution Center (CDRC)

Since 1982, the CDRC has helped more than 75,000 participants by providing an effective, court-approved alternative to criminal prosecution, civil liti-
gation and other traditional avenues for resolving conflict. Some of our programs include:
Supreme Court—The Supreme Court Matrimonial Part Mediation Program offers custody/visitation mediation to litigants through judicial
referral or at the parties election.
Civil Court—The Center provides mediation services to both represented and pro se litigants in the following Civil Court parts: Small Claims—
Civil Claims—Housing Court.
Workplace Conflict Management—The Center offers an extensive range of services to businesses, from organizational assessment and
conflict management design to individualized employee coaching and workplace mediation services.
Parent/Child Mediation—Mediation has proven to be a useful tool in settling conflict between parents and adolescents. It can improve
communication and help parents/teens learn how to “fight better” so that everyone wins.
Community Mediation—Issues such as neighbor disputes, noise complaints, parking issues, animal issues and other community and quality
of life issues are addressed.

The Training Institute

The Training Institute enables NYCID to provide specialized training and conflict resolution services to businesses and other organizations, and to staff its
own programs with qualified mediators.
We offer trainings for attorneys, law enforcement professionals, social workers, counselors, corporate staff and volunteers. Participants learn a variety of
conflict resolution techniques and have opportunities to further expand their skills through continuing education and volunteer service.
Clients include the NYC Dept. of Education, the SI Inter-Agency Council for Aging, Safe Horizon, the Association for Conflict Resolution of Greater New
York and the NYS Governor's Office of Employee Relations.
