SixthSense Technology & MIT's PranavMistry

Every so often in human history one person shares a vision so compelling and mind
shattering that we take pause.SixthSense is an exciting, visionary example and could have a
dramatic impact on mobile augmented reality.
MIT’s PranavMistry, the inventor of “SixthSense Technology” made a presentation at the
TEKIndia 2009 meeting. Since then, interest in his work, boosted by a number of hugely
popular YouTube videos, has skyrocketed.
A grad student with the Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT, he caused a storm with his creation of
SixthSense. He says that the movies “Robocop” and “Minority Report” gave him the
inspiration to create his view of a world not dominated by computers, digital information and
human robots, but one where computers and other digital devices enhance people’s
enjoyment of the physical world.
For $350, Mistry assembled a pocket projector, camera and mirror worn like a pendant
around your neck connected to a mobile computing device in your pocket–nothing more than
a stripped-down smartphone with wires connected to your fingers acting as “visual tracking
fiducials.” His open-sourced software allows SixthSense users to connect digital and mixed
human realities.
Here’s a short video of him demonstrating uses of SixthSense technology.
This visionary has a Web 4.0 view of human and machine interactions. He talks about
augmenting the physical world with digital information using hand gestures to interact with
information. “‘SixthSense integrates digital information into the physical world and its
objects, making the entire world your computer.” He sees SixthSense not changing human
habits but causing computers and other machines to adapt to human needs.
Digital Objects Enhance Human Creativity
Mistry believes that social networking sites keep us separated from the true reality of our
physical world and the importance of remaining human.
He positively believes in the benefits of his invention for those who are physically hindered
such as the blind and deaf.

SixSense - Making a Phone Call on Your Hand

The mobile devices in our pockets transmit and receive voice and data anywhere and to
anyone via the mobile Internet.
Think of a time in the future when people won’t need Twitter or Facebook to connect
digitally. Instead, people will communicate in real time, co-creating and sharing their
realities.
The possibilities with mobile and other wireless devices are enormous from group
collaboration worldwide on personal and business projects to wireless health care
applications. Mistry says: “What we can do is not important…what we should do is more
important.”
In this next video clip, Mistry further demonstratesSixthSense technology. He shows how his
software recognizes three kinds of gestures, including multi-touch similar to the iPhones and
free hand gestures, taking pictures with your hands and projecting them on a wall later for
viewing and editing.
p, Mistry, speaking at the TEDIndia event, discusses reducing the digital divide, how
SixthSense is useful for practical business tasks like accounting, and how drawing and
writing are easily transferred from paper to a personal computer. SixthSense can even draw a
working watch on your wrist.

SixthSense Creates Augmented Reality Newspaper

Mistry also shows a clip-on device that turns a piece of paper into a video display and how
the computer projector and MID (mobile Internet device) is useful for comparison shopping
or deciding whether to buy a book in a bookstore. Suddenly, augmented reality becomes
practical for day-to-day tasks
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED
Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18
minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on
design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop
per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes
on the “Sixth Sense” wearable tech, and “Lost” producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery.

Sixth Sense Technology shows that we stepped to a new generation
>> Monday, November 30, 2009
Its a hot topic that we will be discussing about.. So, did you heard of the new technology like
"Sixth Sense Technology"? if not then i should explain it to you about about it. We are very
familiar with the term "Six Sense"... then can you tell me what are the six sense..?? Actually,
six sense include the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind and we humans are totally
depend on it.

The Technology of which i am here to discuss is kind of the functions related to the eye, ear,
nose, tongue, body, and mind. Till now we were using computers by just sitting in front of
our computer and in the use of few senses. But now after the introduction of the "Sixth Sense
Technology", a computer can sense any sorts of feelings it gets in its surroundings..

It can feel when we move ours fingers, it can see when we ask it, it can read, it can detect the
taste of the product, it can remember whatever it watches, it can show your invisible watch
and many more....

I am sure that you are thinking that i am mad but its all true. There is a such technology like
this... and an Indian brain is on such technology. It mainly was developed by PranavMistry, a
PhD student in the Fluid Interfaces Group at the MIT Media Lab.

Here's the time for giving you some Idea about the Sixth Sense Technology:
Here i embedded the video from the YouTube, so make your valuable time to know it better
and for better experience.
Basically it is a device which is a mini projector and which can be projected on any surface, it
carries the information stored in it and also collects information from the web. It is the one
which obey hand gestures of yours and gives you what you want to see and know.

It is the combined technology of computer along with cell phone. It works when a person
hang it on his neck and start projecting through the micro-projector attached to it. Your
fingers works like the keyboard as well as the mouse.

Easy to Draw: A person can draw anything on paint with the help of his fingers. So, why to
use mouse for painting.

Capture photos with fingers: why to take camera on your holiday and no tension for the
photo space as this Sixth Sense computer will work like your camera. It caputes the photo,
when you make a square with your fingers, highlighting which one you want to frame.

Phone Call: You can call to your friend by typing the numbers on your hand. It display the
keypad of the phone over your palm and the keys appears on the four finger... Use your
another hand's finger to press the keys.

Check the brand of the Product: It helps you to choose the best brand product from the
super market.

Read Books easily: Check out the ratings of the Book you are going to buy, it checks the
ratings from the internet. And another amazing thing is that it reads the book for you.. :)

Newspapers: Did you saw the moving pictures of the Newspaper in the movie Harry Patter,
it is quite similar to it. It Searches the most appropriate video from the web by seeing the
headlines or the caption of the News report.

Check your Flight Status: You can check the status of the flight while you are on Taxi. Just
place the ticket in front of the projector and it checks its status from the internet.

I hope you got the basic idea of what the Sixth Sense Technology is..??

Its really happy to know that the making of such a unique sense able computer will be
exposed to the public. And the public will be given the idea of How to make it, announced by
the inventor PranavMistry.
"Rather than waiting for that time to come, I want people to make their own system. Why
not?," Mistry says in an article on Rediff Business. "People will be able to make their own
hardware. I will give them instructions how to make it. And also provide them key
software...give them basic key software layers...they will be able to build their own
applications. They will be able to modify base level and do anything".

"SixthSense is a wearable gestural interface device that augments the physical

world with digital information and lets people use natural hand gestures to
interact with that information. It was developed by PranavMistry, a PhD student
in the Fluid Interfaces Group at the MIT Media Lab.

The SixthSense prototype is comprised of a pocket projector, a mirror and a

camera. The hardware components are coupled in a pendant-like mobile
wearable device. Both the projector and the camera are connected to the mobile
computing device in the user’s pocket. The device projects visual information,
enabling surfaces, walls and physical objects around the wearer to be used as
interfaces; while the camera recognizes and tracks the user's hand gestures and
physical objects using computer-vision based techniques. The software program
processes the video stream data captured by the camera and tracks the
locations of the colored markers (visual tracking fiducials) at the tip of the user’s
fingers using simple computer-vision techniques. The movements and
arrangements of these fiducials are interpreted into gestures that act as
interaction instructions for the projected application interfaces. The maximum
number of tracked fingers is only constrained by the number of unique fiducials,
thus SixthSense also supports multi-touch and multi-user interaction.

The SixthSense prototype implements several applications that demonstrate the

usefulness, viability and flexibility of the system. The map application lets the
user navigate a map displayed on a nearby surface using hand gestures, similar
to gestures supported by multi-touch based systems, letting the user zoom in,
zoom out or pan using intuitive hand movements. The drawing application lets
the user draw on any surface by tracking the fingertip movements of the user’s
index finger. SixthSense also recognizes user’s freehand gestures (postures). For
example, it implements a gestural camera that takes photos of the scene the
user is looking at by detecting the ‘framing’ gesture. The user can stop by any
surface or wall and flick through the photos he/she has taken. SixthSense also
lets the user draw icons or symbols in the air using the movement of the index
finger and recognizes those symbols as interaction instructions. For example,
drawing a magnifying glass symbol takes the user to the map application or
drawing an ‘@’ symbol lets the user check his mail. The SixthSense system also
augments physical objects the user is interacting with by projecting more
information about these objects projected on them. For example, a newspaper
can show live video news or dynamic information can be provided on a regular
piece of paper. The gesture of drawing a circle on the user’s wrist projects an
analog watch. The current prototype system costs approximately $350 to build."

Check out the latest and greatest idea by an MIT graduate PranavMistry who has developed
'SixthSense' (also known as WUW - Wear Ur World). I believe this hardware and virtual
hardware is providing us a glimps of what the future may soon hold for electronic
devices. This technology, which may not be new, however took a touch of genius to put it all
together into a clever and extremely useful way could soon bridge the divide between man
and machine. This could take us to the next level having the power of the World Wide Web
and all the advantages that come from having such a massive amount of information and
computing power quite literally at our fingertips when ever we need.
Obviously its all a prototype presently, however with more refinement and assuming it
remains about the same cost of the current parts which was in the $300 dollar range could be
a very attractive and economical device. The applications for software like this could
drastically change how we interact, work and play in our world.
I will definitely be keeping up with this interesting and new technology. Its like he mixed an
Iphone with the Wii and made a much more interesting piece of equipment.

The SixthSense prototype contains a number of demonstration applications.

• The map application lets the user navigate a map displayed on a nearby
surface using hand gestures to zoom and pan
• The drawing application lets the user draw on any surface by tracking the
fingertip movements of the user’s index finger.
• SixthSense also implements Augmented reality; projecting information
onto objects the user interacts with.
The system recognizes a user's freehand gestures as well as icons/symbols drawn in the air
with the index finger, for example:
• A 'framing' gesture takes a picture of the scene. The user can stop by any
surface or wall and flick through the photos he/she has taken.
• Drawing a magnifying glass symbol takes the user to the map application
while an ‘@’ symbol lets the user check his mail.
• The gesture of drawing a circle on the user’s wrist projects an analog
watch.

[edit]Cost and license

SixthSense prototypes cost approximately $350 to build (not including the computer),[4][5][6]
the main cost being the micro-projector. The source code will be released under Open

THE ULTIMATE SIXTH (6TH) SENSE TECHNOLOGY

:PranavMistry
Sixth sense ProjectionTechnology Demo:
Mobile phones with large display and a data plan to enable seamless connectivity to the
Internet is slowly expanding, and soon it will wear in nearly every pocket. Students
from MIT, but it is not enough. Developed a way to work with digital data without
keyboard and monitor.

MUST SEE ” ” LIFE CHANGING! “PranavMistry discovery!

The result of their efforts is the technologySixthSense (Sixth Sense).Avoids the need to flaunt
your mobile or PDA pocket. Just have a little neck-hanging device through a Bluetooth
device to connect. Display, keyboard or even a digital camera, users suddenly “materialize”
in their hands.
Highlights: The thrilling potential of SixthSense technology
The system is a camera which scans the user movements, and a projector that translates
digital information into the real world. The computer moves the fingers and arms registers
and uses them to control a variety of applications. Detection of movements facilitate
coloredmarks on your fingers, but the authors of the idea hope that in future the technology
will bypass without them.
“Miniaturization has allowed us to carry computers in their pockets, but there was no
connection between them and the real world. We have developed a sixth sense, therefore, to
digital information, seamlessly linked with reality, “explains lead author idea, student
PranavMistry.
The world at your fingertips
The projector displays information and controls on any color surface, such as a wall on a
sheet of paper or palm. Sixth sense in itself still contains a few basic applications, more likely
to grow in the future.
In the bookstore just to open a book, you shoot her title and the first free site to view
downloaded from Internet reviews.View of the ticket to change the information on the
possible causes of flight delays. The camera can also be used as a camera, the scene defines
Captured frame from the fingers. On a flat surface can then be taken to view and edit photos.
At sign is a picture of his finger in the air opens the e-mail client, as indicated by a circle of
wrist watches virtual display showing the exact time. Similarly, it is possible to map and
finger motions for her to move and change the scale.
Prototype, whose production costs are around $ 350 (7000 crowns), premiered in February at
the TED conference in California, now is the CHI conference in Boston devoted to
interactions between human and computer.
The Sixth Sense yet, although it looks as amazing, but somewhat impractical toy. But who
knows whether the future miniaturization and still find it more convenient user interface will
not work exactly that way.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

We’ve evolved over millions of years to sense the world around us. When we
encounter something, someone or some place, we use our five natural senses
which includes eye, ear, nose, tongue mind and body to perceive information
about it; that information helps us make decisions and chose the right actions to
take. But arguably the most useful information that can help us make the right
decision is not naturally perceivable with our five senses, namely the data,
information and knowledge that mankind has accumulated about everything and
which is increasingly all available online.
Although the miniaturization of computing devices allows us to carry
computers in our pockets, keeping us continually connected to the digital world,
there is no link between our digital devices and our interactions with the physical
world. Information is confined traditionally on paper or digitally on a screen.
SixthSense bridges this gap, bringing intangible, digital information

out into the tangible world, and allowing us

to interact with this information via natural
hand gestures. ‘SixthSense’ frees
information from its confines by seamlessly
integrating it with reality, and thus making
the entire world your computer.

“Sixth Sense Technology”, it is the newest

jargon that has proclaimed its presence in
the technical arena. This technology has
emerged, which has its relation to the power
of these six senses. Our ordinary computers
will soon be able to sense the different
feelings accumulated in the surroundings
and it is all a gift of the ”Sixth Sense
Technology” newly introduced.
SixthSense is a wearable “gesture
based” device that augments the physical
world with digital information and lets
people use natural hand gestures to interact
with that information. It was developed
by PranavMistry, a PhD student in the
Fluid Interfaces Group at the MIT Media
Lab. A grad student with the Fluid Inte
