permanecia em seu máximo sempre que 95% da luz incidente era interceptada.
BROUGHAM (1957), ao mensurar a massa de forragem em intervalos regulares,
durante a rebrotação após o pastejo, descreveu uma trajetória sigmóide, em forma
de “S”, para a massa de forragem no tempo, em que a inclinação maior representa
maior taxa de crescimento. A curva mais achatada representa uma taxa de
crescimento menor. O gráfico de Brougham mostra que, durante o ciclo de
rebrotação, o acúmulo de forragem, no começo, é relativamente lento; então, é
acelerado e diminuído novamente, à medida que o piquete aproxima-se do que se
chamou de teto da produção forrageira, na qual a taxa de acúmulo da forragem é
zero. BROUGHAM (1957) descreveu, assim, três fases em sua curva de acúmulo de
forragem. Na fase 1, chamada de logarítmica, o acúmulo é limitado pela baixa área
foliar e pela baixa captura de luz, porém é acelerado com o tempo. Na fase 2,
chamada de linear, o acúmulo é alto e mais ou menos constante, o que reflete o
potencial da gramínea no ambiente. Na terceira fase, chamada de fase assintótica, o
processo de senescência aumenta. Eventualmente, a taxa de senescência iguala-se
à taxa de produção de folhas, ponto em que o acúmulo de forragem diminui até zero.
Em algumas condições, a senescência de folhas pode exceder a produção de
folhas; nesse caso, a massa forrageira em pé pode diminuir com o tempo.
