Who are we really and simply?

We are the Supreme One Universal Life (S.O.U.L) associated with a particular body/mind
structure through an act leading to procreation in the process of evolution within given
conditions.

We are the Supreme One Universal Life experiencing existence within given conditions
through Its association with a body/mind structure.

The body/mind structure, whatever it does, experiences and undergoes, is always rooted in
the Supreme One Universal Life for its very existence.

It is the Supreme One Universal Life, through Its connection with the body/mind structure,
that sustains the structure and allows it to be alive and to experience itself and everything
else in existence within the given set of conditions. It is the S.O.U.L that animates the
structure and every other structure. It is the S.O.U.L’s light in the mind that allows the mind
to have consciousness and take cognisance of existence through the instruments of
experience. It is the S.O.U.L’s connection with the structure that makes the breath move,
the heart to beat, the hair to grow, the sense organs to operate, the mind to apprehend, the
intellect to comprehend, memory to store and recollect, the I-thought to manifest, the body
to grow, the impulses to seek expression and gratification, all with the given set of
conditions, patterns and parameters.

In reality, we are neither the body, nor the mind, nor the whole field of experience, not
even the ‘me’ that experiences objects, events, thoughts and feelings. The I-thought arises
naturally when past accumulated experiences tied to the body/mind structure and the
latter’s relationships with itself and to what is distinct from itself are kept alive in the mental
space through continuous recollection and belief in a continuous mental identity at the
centre of the accumulation and recollection. Through this process of accumulation,
recollection, belief and identification, the impression of a continuous “I” or “me” is
generated. But it is only a persistent thought flowing between memory and intellect,
between remembering and image-making. This I-thought gradually becomes a central
image with a name, with a set of other thoughts and memories associated to it and turning
constantly around it. It is nothing but an intellectual concept feeding upon processed
memories tied to the body/mind complex. It is this central intellectual concept that rules
over the mind and tends to restrict mental attention and consciousness to the egoic sphere.
Thus from the intellectual point of view, the I-thought appears to be the owner and ruler of
the body/mind complex. It constantly explains to itself through the generation of thoughts
in terms of words and images that it is the master of the body/mind complex. It uses
language as a tool for projecting its hegemony: it constantly uses a dual language by saying
my body, my mind, my property, my thoughts, my breath, my heart, my problem and
separates itself from everything with which it does not identify. For the I-thought, the world
of experience is made up of “I, me, mine” and “not-I, not-me, not-mine”.

The I-thought is predominant during the wakeful state, when the intellect-memory-
consciousness connection keeps operating. But during day-dreaming, concentration,
absorption, night-dreaming and deep sleep, when the egoic connection is severed, it
vanishes. Yet, in its absence, all the bodily functions continue. Thus, it is not the truth; it is
only an appearance, a ghost, a mere intellectual fantasy. The truth is the Life that animates
the body/mind structure and every other structure in the universe with aliveness and that
illumines the mind with awareness that makes experience possible. This is our true identity,
which is always perfect, complete and timeless. It is the ground on which the whole
universe rests and depends for its very existence and evolution.

We, as the space of silent still awareness, are that, which is beyond the grasp of the mind
and intellect. Thus, we cannot rely on the mind and intellect to reveal that to us. They just
cannot do that. All that they can do is to produce the I-thought with its host of concepts
and beliefs and to superimpose an illusory egoic dimension on reality. We have to go
beyond mind, intellect, memory, thought and experience in order to be attuned to that. We
can never become that, we are always that in truth. We just have to recognise this truth.
The discarding of the fantasy and the recognition of this truth is called enlightenment.
Enlightenment is not an intellectual affair; it is a spiritual realisation attained through
meditation, through silent still awareness in the herenow.
