Chemistry 30A: Introduction to Organic Chemistry

Summer 2010

MWF 8-9:50 Boelter 3400

Instructor: Dr. Arif Karim

Office: 6111 Young Hall
Office Hours: MW 10-12
Email: akarim@chem.ucla.edu

Teaching Assistants: Cesar Mejia

Saori Shiraki

Required Textbooks:
Organic Chemistry 5th Edition (Brown and Foote)
Study Guide and Solutions Manual for textbook
Molecular Model Kit

Optional Textbooks:
Organic Chemistry as a Second Language 2nd Edition (Klein)
Pushing Electrons 3rd Edition (Weeks)

General: The course will follow the textbook very closely so it is critical that you keep up with
the assigned reading. The best way to learn the material in this course is to do a lot of practice
problems. Looking for trends in the reactions, etc. will be much more effective than trying to
memorize everything.

Exams: The midterm exams will be held in class on Friday in Weeks 3 and 6.

Exam 1: Friday (7/9) (40%)

Exam 2: Friday (7/30) (40%)

Quizzes: Short quizzes (20 minutes) will be given in class on Friday in Weeks 2 and 5

Quiz 1: Friday (7/2) (10%)

Quiz 2: Friday (7/23) (10%)

Makeup Exams: Makeup exams will only be given in the case of a medical emergency
appropriately documented by a physician. Makeup exams will not be given in the case of
vacation travel.

Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Any instances of cheating will
result in a zero on the exam and referral to the Dean.

Regrades: Regrades will be possible for any exam done in pen up to one week after the exam
has been returned. If the exam is done in pencil, a regrade will only be possible if the exam does
not leave my sight. Regrade requests must be submitted in writing along with the exam.
