Was The Prophet

Mohammed Born
Noor (light) From
Allah

By Abdul Kareem Ibn

Some Sufi Ashari Maturidis believe that the first thing Allah created
was the light of prophet Mohammed and so they believe the prophet
was part noor (light) from Allah as well as part human.

They often narrated the following hadeeths to prove that the prophet
was born noor (light) from Allah as well as being born human:

It was narrated from Khaalid ibn Ma’daan that the

Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “O Messenger of
Allah, tell us about yourself.” He said: “I am the answer to
the prayer of the father of Ibraaheem, and the glad tidings
of ‘Eesa, and when my mother became pregnant with me,
she saw something as if a light came out of her and
illuminated the palaces of Busra in the land of Syria.”

Narrated by Ibn Ishaaq with his isnaad; Seerat Ibn Hishaam, 1/166.
Narrated with a different isnaad by al-Tabari in his Tafseer, 1/566,
and by al-Haakim in al-Mustadrak, 2/600. He said: its isnaad is
saheeh although they [al-Bukhaari and Muslim] did not narrated, and
al-Dhahabi agreed with him. See al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 1545

Al-Tabaraani narrated that the Prophet (peace and

blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “My mother saw in
a dream that there came from between her legs a lamp
that illuminated the palaces of Syria.” Classed as hasan by
al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 224.

Ahmad (16700) narrated from al-‘Irbaad ibn Saariyah

that the Messenger of Allah said… and he mentioned the
hadeeth according to which the mother of the Messenger
of Allah saw, when she gave birth to him, a light which
illuminated the palaces of Syria.
Al-Haythami said in Majma’ al-Zawaa’id: its isnaad is hasan.

From these hadeeth the Sufi Ashari Maturidis belief that the prophet
was part noor (light) from Allah as well as part human is proven to be
unfounded and false.

These hadeeth indicate a sign of the Prophet Mohammed’s prophet

hood. The light that came out of his mum in a dream of his birth and
the light which came out of his mum which illuminated the palaces of
Syria when he was actually born is just one among the many signs
that Allah has bestowed upon the prophet Mohammed to prove that
the prophet Mohammed was a real messenger of Allah.
The reason why Allah chose light as a sign of the Prophet
Mohammed’s prophet-hood was because the prophet Mohammed
was the light of the message of Islam and the light of guidance too
and upon Islam but not literally light.
The Standing Committee for Academic Research and the
Issuing of Fatwas have stated, “The Prophet has noor (light) which
is the light of the message and guidance from Allah, through which
Allah guides whomsoever he will of his slaves. No doubt the light of
the message and of guidance comes from Allah.” Fataawa al-Lajnah
al-Daa’imah, 1/310.
The above hadeeths in no way prove the prophet Mohammed was
literally noor (light) as this would mean, these hadeeth would
contradict another authentic hadeeth about the angels being made
from light.

The Prophet said: “The angels were created from light, and
Iblees was created from smokeless fire, and Adam (peace
be upon him) was created from what has been described to
you.” Narrated by Muslim, 2996.
Shaykh al-Albaani said (about the above hadeeth) “…This hadeeth
clearly indicates that the angels are the only ones who are created
from light, not Adam and his sons (all of mankind), so pay heed and
do not be negligent.” Taken from al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (458)

Allah states that the prophet is man and not noor (light)
and human, Allah said, “Say I (Mohammed) am a man like
you – it has been revealed to me that your god is One God.”
(Quran al-Khaf 18:110)

In Saheeh Bukhari it is reported “The Prophet heard the voices of

some people quarrelling near his gate, so he went to them and said,
"I am only a human being…”

In Saheeh Muslim it is reported “The prophet Mohammed said “O

people, I am a human being…”

Even the kuffaar in the time of the prophet Mohammed knew he was
a human as they use to say about the Quran, "this (the Quran) is
nothing but the word of (Mohammed) a human being''
surah Al Mudassir:25

Qadi Iyad said, “We have mentioned before that prophet

(Mohammed) and all the prophets and messengers are human being
and that there body and apparent things are pure manly.” As shifa of
Qadi Iyad Vol 2 Section 3, chapter 2

Shaykh Uthaymeen said, “With regard to Muhammad, like all

other human beings, he was created from the water (semen) of his
father, Abd-Allaah ibn Abd al-Muttalib. He is no different from other
human beings in the manner in which he was created, as he said
about himself, “…I am a human being like you and liable to
forget like you… (Saheeh Bukhari).” He felt fear, got thirsty,
felt cold, suffered from the heat, got sick and died.
Everything that humans go through as a part of human nature, he
also went through, but he is distinguished by the fact that he received
revelation and he was qualified to bear the Message, as Allah said,
“Allah knows best with whom to place His Message” al-An’aam
6:124. Majmoo’ Fataawa wa Rasaa’il Fadeelat al-, vol. 1, p. 62-63

In conclusion the hadeeths about the light that came out of the
prophets mum in a dream of his birth and the light which came out of
his mum which illuminated the palaces of Syria when he was actually
born in no way prove he was born noor. This understanding of the
hadeeths would go against the Quran and Sunnah as these both state
the prophet is a (hundred percent) human and not noor, also they
indicate only the angels are made of light and no other creation.

Thus these hadeeths only prove that the prophet Mohammed was a
true messenger of Allah and Allah bestowed these things on the
prophet (when he was born) and his mum in her dream as a sign of
the prophet Mohammed’s prophet hood.
