2005 CALIFORNIA/NEVADA JOINT ENCAMPMENT

Encampment graduates:
You have now graduated from encampment and are a member of the Cadet Training Group.
The encampment training standard is set high, but you met the challenge. Like the 10,000 CTG cadets who went before, you know
the importance of “attention to detail”, leadership, honor, teamwork and pride in a job well done.
We congratulate all the cadets of the 2005 California-Nevada Joint Encampment. During the past week you advanced your educa-
tion and training and are better cadets and future American leaders for it. We look forward to watching your continued success in
the future.

1
DAY ONE

Day One of encampment saw 157 basic

cadets and 14 Advanced Training Flight
cadets from California, Nevada, Minne-
sota, Illinois, Oregon, and South Carolina
descend upon Camp San Luis Obispo,
where encampent staff welcomed them.
The basic cadets said their goodbyes to
their parents and said hello to flight and
tactical staff members.

2
DAY TWO

Day Two of encampment kicked off with

encampment commander Lt Col Tony
Upton formally welcoming the basic
cadets to Camp San Luis Obispo and the
challenge of a lifetime. Cadets attended
worship services and Moral Leadership
classes conducted by CAP chaplains, as
well as sessions on Opportunities in CAP,
Customs & Courtesies, and proper uni-
form wear. Cadets were also given their
first inspection of the week, conducted by
the flight staff.

3
DAY THREE

Day Three saw classes on Attitude &

Discipline, USAF Airpower, Civil Air Pa-
trol Structure and Operations, and more
Flight Training Activities.
The Basic Cadets slowly began to grow
accustomed to morning PT (physical
training) well before sunrise, in the cool
Central Coast morning air!
For some unlucky Basics, all that march-
ing in new boots proved to be a recipe
for disaster, or at least, some serious
blisters! Fortunately, medic TSgt Menke
(on loan to the encampment courtesy of
the California Air National Guard) was on
the scene with blister treatments ready.
Some of the Basics learned firsthand that
Moleskin is your friend!

4
DAY FOUR

On Day Five, the Cadet Training Group

completed the Cadet Physical Fitness Test
and took on the Obstacle and Leadership
Reaction Courses at Camp SLO. The team-
building and esprit de corps fostered by
the day’s events were truly a sight to see.
Where mere days before, these Basics
were just a bunch of individuals, the sense
of team developing was unmistakable.

5
DAY FIVE

Without a doubt, Day Five was one of the

highlights of encampment. As if orienta-
tion flights in a California Army National
Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopter weren’t
enough, Wednesday also brought small
arms familiarization training under the
guidance of qualified military instruc-
tors, giving everyone in the group the
opportunity to fire an M16A2 rifle on the
25 meter range at Camp SLO. Low-level
flights over the California coastline pro-
vided sights few will ever forget, and a
significant number of cadets earned NRA
marksmanship badges on the rifle range.

6
DAY SIX

Coming off the high of helicopter rides

and shooting military rifles the day before,
on Day Six, the CTG refocused its energies
on mastering the tasks necessary to meet
the encampment standard.
Squadron drill and volleyball competi-
tions were held, with the winners advanc-
ing to the group competition.
The first practices for the encampment
graduation parade were held.
In advance of the final group inspection,
the Cadet Training Squadrons conducted
their own inspections.

The Gong
CTG command staff had plotted for
months to try to make Colonel Wong
break a smile at the final evening for-
mation of encampment. Though such
scheming is typically confined to the
Tactical staff, the CTG command staff
managed to teach the old folks a thing
or two this time. Above, accomplice Lt
Col Hall moments before sounding the
“gong” on cue from CTG Executive Officer
Lieutenant Park.

weekbook supplement covering days 7 and 8, which took place after the
weekbook went to press.
