Epidemiologi

Epidemiologi adalah ilmu yang

mempelajari pola kesehatan
dan penyakit serta faktor yang
terkait di tingkat populasi. Ini
adalah model cornerstone
penelitian kesehatan
masyarakat, dan membantu
menginformasikan kedokteran
berbasis bukti (eveidence
based medicine) untuk
mengidentifikasikan faktor
risiko penyakit serta
menentukan pendekatan
penanganan yang optimal
untuk praktik klinik dan untuk
kedokteran preventif. Menurut
Dr. Anton Muhibuddin
(Universitas Brawijaya), saat ini
epidemiologi telah berkembang
pesat baik pendalaman ilmunya
maupun perluasan ilmunya.
Perluasan ilmu epidemiologi
saat ini juga mencakup
epidemiologi bidang pertanian
agrokompleks (termasuk
perikanan, perkebunan,
prikanan) dan mikrobiologi.
Perluasan tersebut dirasa perlu
karena manfaat epidemiolgi
sangat nyata dirasakan dalam
bidang-bidang ilmu tersebut.
Pendalaman epidemiologi di
antaranya meliputi peramalan
berbasis komputer dan
pengelolaan agroekosistem.

Epidemiologi menggunakan
beragam alat-alat ilmiah, dari
kedokteran dan statistik
sampai sosiologi dan
antropologi. Banyak penyakit
mengikuti arus migrasi
penduduk, sehingga
pemahaman tentang
bagaimana penduduk bergerak
mengikuti musim sangat
penting untuk memahami
penyebaran penyakit tertentu
pada populasi tersebut.
Epidemiologi tidak hanya
berkutat pada masalah
penyebaran penyakit, tetapi
juga dengan cara
penanggulangannya.
