The simple present tense in English is used to describe an action that is regular, true or
normal.

We use the present tense:

1. For repeated or regular actions in the present time period.

 I take the train to the office.


 The train to Berlin leaves every hour.
 John sleeps eight hours every night during the week.

2. For facts.

 The President of The USA lives in The White House.


 A dog has four legs.
 We come from Switzerland.

3. For habits.

 I get up early every day.


 Carol brushes her teeth twice a day.
 They travel to their country house every weekend.

4. For things that are always / generally true.

 It rains a lot in winter.


 The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace.
 They speak English at work.

Verb Conjugation & Spelling

We form the present tense using the base form of the infinitive (without the TO).

In general, in the third person we add 'S' in the third person.

Subject Verb The Rest of the sentence

I / you / we / they speak / learn English at home

he / she / it speaks / learns English at home

The spelling for the verb in the third person differs depending on the ending of that verb:

1. For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, or -Z we add -ES in the third person.

2. For verbs that end in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and add -IES.

NOTE: For verbs that end in a vowel + Y, we just add -S.

 say – says

Negative Sentences in the Simple Present Tense

To make a negative sentence in English we normally use Don't or Doesn't with all verbs
EXCEPT To Be and Modal verbs (can, might, should etc.).

 Affirmative: You speak French.


Negative: You don't speak French.

You will see that we add don't between the subject and the verb. We use Don't when the
subject is I, you, we or they.

Definition: The past simple tense expresses actions, facts, or events that were started and
completed in the past

There Are 5 Different Circumstances In Which The Past Simple Tense Is Used:

1. An action that was started and completed at a certain time in the past. You do not
necessarily have to state the time the action was completed in order to use the past simple
tense.

Examples:
1. I TURNED the car on this morning.
2. DID you TURN the car on this morning?
3. The sun DIDN’T RISE before 7AM last week.

2. Multiple actions started and completed at a certain time in the past. This is just like use 1,
except that there is more than one action mentioned.

Examples:
1. She DROVE to the store, BOUGHT mulch for the garden, and SPREAD it in the yard
yesterday.
2. DID you TAKE out the trash, WASH the windows, and CLEAN the house earlier?
3. I WALKED downstairs, TURNED on the light, and LOOKED in the fridge for a snack last
night.

3. Periods of time that began and ended during the past. To show that an action was
ongoing for a certain duration of time, make sure you state for how long it was happening.

Examples:
1. For six years, she CARED for her elderly mother.
2. We SAT at the restaurant for thirty minutes.
3. They LIVED in Michigan for the last three years.

4. Past habits that are no longer going on. As if you were reminiscing about something you
used to do, it’s common to put some sort of indication about when it was that this habit was
ongoing.

Examples:
1. We TALKED for hours when we were kids.
2. After class, we often WALKED to the ice cream parlor.

B          : Well, aaahhh Lisa. (Oohh, Lisa).

A         : How do you know her?

B           : Well we have met before. She was my friend when we were in junior high school.

A         : Aaaaa.. I see. Where does she come from?

B          : She comes from America. New York.

A         : What does she do then here?

B           : Well, her parents often move to another country every four years. So now her
parents have been transferred to Australia. That’s why now she is here and she works in the
hospital as a Nurse.

A           : Really? Waow… Which hospital does she work?

B           : She works in Paramarta Hospital.

A         : Does she like doing exercise?

B          : No, she doesn’t. She isn’t very sporty. Hahaha why are you so curious about her? I
bet you like her, ha?

A         : Hmmm Well yeah, she is beautiful and attractive. If you don’t mind, do you want to
introduce her to me

B          : That’s not a big deal brother.
