Traces of Grace
Dear Fellow Parishioners
Our Lenten season has begun in earnest with the swath
of ashes on Ash Wednesday. A little extra punch for me
was being with our Catechumens (19 folks) as well as
our Candidates (39) last Sunday. We journeyed to Holy
Family Cathedral joining a cathedral full of other Cate-
chumens and Candidates for the Rite of Election with
the Bishop. Actually there were 5 Rite of Election litur-
gies at the Cathedral during that week since there were
so many persons who are entering fully the Church at
the Easter rites!
I am always encouraged by persons who make that leap
of faith to enter the life and graces of the Church. Their
stories vary widely in how they have come to Christ and
developing an interest and finally a love of the Church.
What we ‘regular’ Catholics often take for granted or
have gotten used to by a long life of practice; these folks
are still full of wonder and curiosity. When I hear their
conversations, I realize what a great mystery of love it is
that we try to live and how impossible it is without the
Church in all of its depth and breadth. Certainly there
can be moments of hesitation and uncertainty in this
process, but it is a real grace to discover that grace hap-
pens!
Speaking of the breadth of Catholic experiences, re-
cently our parish school
Spanish teacher, Mrs.
Medrano invited her 5th
grade class to celebrate
Sunday Mass in Spanish at
San Felipe de Jesus Chapel
in Capo Beach. Fr. Mario
warned them to get there
early because the chapel is packed on Sundays along with
overflow into Coleman Hall. Most got there early, but
some didn’t believe Fr. Mario and arrived just as Mass
was starting with their parents. Needless to say, it was a
‘packed house’ that day! The community was very wel-
coming and it was a great experience for the students to
hear how people pray in another language. Fr. Mario
enjoyed all the action that day! You can tell by the pho-
tos. Another step uniting us in faith!

Queridos feligreses,
Nuestra Cuaresma ha comenzado en serio con la franja de
las cenizas el Miércoles de Ceniza. Un empuje bueno para
mí fue estar con nuestros catecúmenos (19 personas), así
como nuestros candidatos (39 personas) el domingo pasa-
do. Nos reunimos en la Catedral de la Sagrada Familia que
se encontraba llena de otros catecúmenos y candidatos
para el Rito de la Elección con el Señor Obispo. En realidad
hubo 5 liturgias del Rito de Elección en la catedral durante
la semana dado que hay tantas personas que están entrando
completamente a la Iglesia en los ritos de Semana Santa.
Siempre me alegra ver que personas hagan ese salto de fe
para entrar en la vida y la gracia de la Iglesia. Sus historias
varían ampliamente en la forma en que han venido a Cristo
y han desarrollado un interés y, finalmente, un amor por la
Iglesia. En lo que nosotros, “los católicos regulares," lo ve-
mos como algo concedido o como una costumbre como
resultado de una larga práctica; estas personas, en cambio,
están llenas de asombro y curiosidad. Al escuchar sus con-
versaciones, me doy cuenta del gran misterio de amor que
tratamos de vivir y lo imposible que es vivirlo fuera de la
Iglesia en toda su profundidad y amplitud. Ciertamente pue-
de haber momentos de duda e incertidumbre en este pro-
ceso, pero es una verdadera gracia descubrir que la gracia
sucede.
Hablando de la amplitud de experiencias Católicas, recien-
temente nuestra maestra de español de la escuela parro-
quial, la señora Medrano, invitó a su clase de quinto grado a
celebrar la Misa Dominical en
español en la Capilla de San Feli-
pe de Jesús localizada en Capis-
trano Beach. El Padre Mario les
advirtió que llegaran temprano
porque la capilla y el salón Cole-
man están sobre llenos los do-
mingos. La mayoría llegaron
temprano, pero algunos no creyeron en lo que dijo el Padre
Mario y llegaron justo al comienzo de la Misa junto con sus
padres. ¡No hace falta decir que fue una "casa llena" ese día!
La comunidad fue muy acogedora y fue una gran experien-
cia para los estudiantes escuchar cómo la gente oró en otro
idioma. ¡El Padre Mario disfrutó toda la acción de ese día!
Usted puede darse cuenta por las fotos. ¡Otro elemento
que nos une en la fe!

ST. EWARD'S RETREAT FOR WOMEN
Mater Dolorosa Retreat Center
April 1, 2011.
St. Edward’s Retreat for women will be held at Mater
Dolorosa Retreat Center in Sierra Madre on the
weekend of April 1, 2011. Join your fellow parishion-
ers for this weekend of spiritual
enrichment and growth. The retreat which is led by
the Passionist retreat team begins Friday evening and
concludes Sunday at 11:00 am.
The theme for this year is - Come to the Well of
Living Water...Our Life of Prayer.

A TORRENT FROM HEAVEN
The final count on the "Pennies from Heaven" cam-
paign donations at St. Edward was an astounding
$27,412. St. Edward Parish came in far ahead of
the second highest parish at $11,182. Included in the
St. Edward total was $6,615 from our parish school
("and the children will lead them") and $3,243 from
our San Felipe Chapel. Everyone took the baby bot-
tles for life to heart.
The Crisis Pregnancy Centers wish to thank the St
Edward donors for their astounding generosity. The
total PFH donations from Orange Diocese Parishes
to the Orange County Crisis Pregnancy Centers to
date is $229,666. It is heart warming to ponder on
how many babies can be saved by this generosity.

LENTEN SOUL WALK
Come join us again this Lent for a morning SOUL
WALK on the beach This year we’ll walk every
Thursday morning during Lent. After a contempla-
tive prayer experience, we walk together along-
side the ocean in God’s beautiful creation. We will
gather in the Capistrano Beach end of Doheny
State Park at 8:30 AM and will walk for about an
hour. Just turn right on Beach Road off PCH and
park in the metered spaces.
SOUP AND STATIONS
Back again by popular demand, we invite every-
one to come and pray the Stations of the Cross
and then enjoy a simple soup supper after the
5:30 PM mass on all the Fridays during Lent. All
our wonderful ministries will take a turn hosting
the event each week. Stations will be in the
Church, soup in Knight Hall.
