First Week of Duty


Morning Group

Monday
7:00am – 10:00am - Students Orientation at Mauway Gym
10:00am – 10:15am - Courtesy call to the Nursing Supervisor, Head Nurse, Staff Nurses and
Nursing aides
10:15am – 10:45am - Pre-conference
- Reiterate policies, rules and regulations of the hospital regarding
affiliation and affiliates
- Orientation on the physical set-up, policies, rules and regulations of
the assigned Pavilion
- Discuss the role of each staff members in the psychiatric area
- Psychiatrist
- Psychologist
- Nurses
- Nursing Aides
- Social Workers
- Family / Significant others
- Observation in the ward activities of the personnel with clients
- Discuss the responsibility of the nursing students in dealing with clients’
view and perceptions and remember the following techniques:
- focus on his/her safety and security
- focus also on the safety, security and feelings of the client
- accept client as he/she is
- be honest and consistent
- encourage clients to express more fully
- reflect, clarify and validate client’s statement
- encourage hope and never with false assurance
- acknowledge verbal and non-verbal behavior
- do not provide a response that implies that the client is unworthy
- never be defensive and avoid asking why
- attempt to establish good relationship at all times

11:45am – 12:00pm - Evaluation Conference
- Discuss the grading system, the requirements of the related learning
experience, flow of the duty for the entire 2 weeks of stay in the area
- Provide assignments to students for the whole rotation.
Tuesday

9:00am – 11:00am - Nurse – Patient Interaction (Working Phase)
- Promote positive self-concept
- Realistic goal setting
- Organize support system
- Verbalize feelings (encourage)
- Implement action plan
- Develop positive coping behaviors
- Evaluate the results of plan of action
- Receiving of clients from the staff nurses and nursing aides for activity
- Activity of Daily Living
- Hygiene and Grooming
- Emphasizes on hand washing, wound dressing, care of the
hair, care of the mouth, care of the skin, care of the nail
- Short Prayer

- Completion of requirements for grades in RLE psychiatric nursing
exposure
