WHAT?
The European Master in Tourism
Management is a two-year world-class
integrated programme aimed at qualifying
graduates to deal with the huge challenges
and opportunities facing international
tourism.
Tourism is a social and economic
phenomenon, which calls for a holistic
approach to tourism education where
broader aims of the industry and society
are explicitly addressed in the curricula.
The European Master in Tourism
Management (EMTM) provides students
with a far-reaching and integrated
understanding of the multiple disciplines
and paradigms concerned with the subject,
which are bound together through the
framework of sustainability.
MAIN OBJECTIVES

strategically manage and make
sustainable and effective decisions in
placements of high responsibility in
tourism institutions
• to provide future professionals with an
integrated knowledge of the dynamics
of tourism development, sustainable
management, the role of cultural
diversity, innovation and governance in

• to train future researchers in the field of
tourism management.
WHERE?
The EMTM is a fully integrated two-year
European programme promoted and
tailor-made by three university partners:
The University of Girona (Spain),
known for its research and pursuit of
teaching excellence in tourism product
innovation and destination management;
the University of Southern Denmark
(Denmark), internationally recognized for
its research and education in the field of
sustainable tourism development; and
the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia),
renowned for its excellence in tourism
policy design and tourism environmental
management and economics. The
language of instruction is English.
FUTURE JOBS
The European Master in Tourism
Management (EMTM) will provide students
with the skills to become international
professional consultants, innovative
entrepreneurs, government and public
administration officials, tourism business
managers, qualified employees, or
academic researchers in the field of
tourism.
HOW?
Students follow a mandatory mobility
scheme, starting the first semester at
the University of Southern Denmark
in Esbjerg, Denmark, where they are
introduced, at an advanced level, to the
conceptualization of tourism development
with particular attention to sustainability,
strategic communication and economics.
Moving next to Ljubliana, Slovenia, for
the second semester, students learn
about policy instruments, indicators
and management tools available for
tourism policy and strategy design, with
emphasis on environmental issues in
tourism development. Spending the third
semester in Girona, Spain, students will
be able to understand and effectively
manage organizational networks, consumer
relations and innovation processes. The
fourth semester is exclusively devoted to
the completion of the Master thesis.

Management has been selected by the
EU Commission as an Erasmus Mundus
Master within the new Erasmus Mundus
II framework. The Programme aims to
make Europe the most competitive and
knowledge-based economy in the world
and a reference for high quality and

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN DENMARK, THE FACULTY OF HUMANITIES - ESBJERG CITY OF ESBJERG

Offers a wide range of innovative and interdisciplinary courses in
tourism. Educators delivering EMTM courses are affiliated with the
Centre for Tourism, Innovation and Culture. They are experienced
in managing international research and are very well connected at
national and international levels.
The fifth largest city in Denmark, Esbjerg is located on the North
Sea, on the West coast of Jutland. It has a vibrant night life with
small, friendly venues where all types of music are offered. From
Esbjerg, you can easily access the rest of Jutland, Copenhagen,
and the north of Germany. Nearby you will find Ribe, Denmark’s
oldest town, unspoilt idyllic islands and miles of long sandy
beaches.

UNIVERSITY OF LJUBLJANA, THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS
The Faculty has important links to the corporate world and
high commitment to research and teaching quality standards
and market orientation. Together with the degree and
postgraduateprogrammes in business and economics, the Faculty
is the pioneer of tourism higher education in Slovenia.
CITY OF LJUBLJANA
The capital of Slovenia is a young, dynamic Central European City
with a modern lifestyle, located between the Alps and the Adriatic
Sea. It is a vibrant city full of surprises, characterised by a unique
fusion of complementing contrasts. It has everything that modern
capitals can boast, but at the same time it has preserved the
friendly and relaxing atmosphere of a small town. Ljubljana is a city
of culture with many cultural events including many international
festivals. Ljubljana is an ideal departure point for the discovery
of Slovenia and its very close surrounding countries, Croatia,
Hungary, Austria and Italy.

UNIVERSITY OF GIRONA, THE FACULTY OF TOURISM
The first Faculty of tourism in Spain to provide higher education
and academic research in tourism dates back to 1989. Its highly
experienced staff covers the full spectrum of tourism-related
disciplines and have privileged relations with the national tourism
sector.
CITY OF GIRONA
The city is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the
Pyrenees. The old town is one of the most evocative historical
city centres in Catalonia, with certain elements that are unique
in Europe. It is also a source of cultural production and has an
intense cultural life with regular, critically acclaimed theater and
music festivals. Nowadays, its region and Catalonia are one of
the main sources of culinary creation. It is a prominent cultural
tourism destination with easy and close access to the Costa Brava,
Pyrenees, Barcelona and Southern France.

Term 4: Master Thesis
TERM 4 IS EXCLUSIVELY DEVOTED
TO THE COMPLETION OF THE
MASTER THESIS.
The aim of the Master thesis is to demonstrate skills at limiting
and solving a problem through individual and critical application
of the methods and theories introduced during the courses. The
thesis topic is formulated by the student and approved by a thesis
supervisor (or supervisors) assigned by the EMTM Study Board.
