PHARM-4-FUN EST.

TIME: 30 MIN (PER MEDICATION)


This activity provides you with the opportunity to create pertinent patient education on the pharmacological
agents associated with the vSim activity. You will utilize this worksheet for each drug listed under the
pharmacology are of the suggested reading section.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES


At the end of this activity, student will be able to:

1. Explain purpose for taking the identified pharmacological agents.


2. Discuss pertinent patient education related to all the listed pharmacological agent.

ASSIGNMENT

1. Log into thePoint and launch the assigned vSim, following all instruc tions posted on your learning
management system (LMS).
2. Review the information contained in the patient information.
3. Review the smart sense links associated with the Pharmacological agents found in the suggested
reading area.
4. Use the smart sense link to complete the following “patient education” worksheet for each
pharmacological agent listed in the Pharmacology are of the suggested reading section.
5. Submit for review.
PATIENT EDUCATION WORKSHEET
NAME OF MEDICATION, CLASSIFICATION, AND INCLUDE PROTOTYPE

MEDICATION: Amlodipine (Norvasc)

CLASSIFICATION: antihypertensives

PROTOTYPE: calcium channel blockers

SAFE DOSE OR DOSE RANGE, SAFE ROUTE


5 mg/day PO initially; may be increased by 2.5 mg/day every 7-14 days; not to exceed 10
mg/day maintenance: 5-10 mg/day (Rxlist 2020)

PURPOSE FOR TAKING THIS MEDICATION


It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and angina. It can be used by itself or with other medicines to
treat these conditions. Lowers blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump as
hard(Rxlist 2020).

PATIENT EDUCATION WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICATION


 Encourage the patient to comply with additional interventions for hypertension (weight reduction, low-
sodium diet, smoking cessation, moderation of alcohol consumption, regular exercise, and stress
management) (Rxlist 2020).
 Medication controls but does not cure hypertension.
 Instruct patient and family on proper techniques for monitoring BP.
 Advise them to check BP at least weekly and to report significant changes.
 May cause light-headedness, especially during the first days of therapy.
 Advise patient to notify health care professional if light-headedness occurs.
PATIENT EDUCATION WORKSHEET

MEDICATION: Digoxin (Lanxin)

CLASSIFICATION: Inotropes

PROTOTYPE: cardiac glycosides

SAFE DOSE OR DOSE RANGE, SAFE ROUTE


Oral solution: 0.05 mg/mL (pediatric)
Injection**: 0.1 mg/mL (pediatric); 0.25 mg/mL
Tablets: 0.0625 mg; 0.125 mg; 0.25 mg(Rx 2021)
PURPOSE FOR TAKING THIS MEDICATION
 Heart failure
 Atrial fibrillation
 Can reduce manifestation, but does not prolong life(Rx 2021).

PATIENT EDUCATION WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICATION


 Report manifestations of hypokalemia (nausea, vomiting, and general weakness )
 Consume high potassium foods (green leafy vegetables, bananas, potatoes )
 Monitor heart rate in recognizing and report changes, such as an irregular rate with early or extra
beats
 Monitor and report toxicity manifestations such as anorexia or CNS effects
 Check pulse rate and rhythm before admin. Notify provider if the heart rate is less than 60 beats
per minute in adult, 70 beats per minute in children, or 90 beats per minute in infants
 When caring for clients who are received IV digoxin monitor for dysrhythmias (Rx 2021)
