Magnesium Deficiency = Higher Risk for Diabetes Mellitus?

New Study Confirms Lin

k
Diabetes mellitus is a disease in which the body does not produce or does not ut
ilize insulin effectively. A new research study out of Brazil, adds to the growi
ng evidence that magnesium deficiency is linked to diabetes mellitus risk and co
mplications. Magnesium has been found to regulate and improve blood sugar contro
l and those who are low on this mineral increase their risk of developing diabet
es mellitus considerably.
Orange, CA - March 26, 2011 -- A new study from Brazil, scrutinized magnesium in
take and blood levels in 51 type 2 diabetes patients. Blood sugar (glucose) test
s were done which measure the levels of glucose in the patient's blood. One such
test is the "fasting blood sugar test" which measures blood glucose after you h
ave not eaten for at least 8 hours.
Usually, blood glucose levels increase a bit after eating. This increase causes
the pancreas to release insulin so that blood glucose levels do not get too high
. Blood glucose levels that remain high over time can damage eyes, kidneys, nerv
es, and blood vessels.
The study found that those patients with lower fasting and after-meal blood gluc
ose levels had higher blood magnesium levels while those patients with higher fa
sting glucose levels had lower blood magnesium levels and higher urine levels of
magnesium. A full 82% of the diabetics studied showed that magnesium intake was
insufficient with the lowest levels found in those with kidney complications. A
bout 62% of the patients had low blood levels of magnesium.
The researchers noted that because magnesium is so vital to energy supply and ut
ilization in the body, they were not surprised to find that lower levels of magn
esium in the blood lead to metabolic malfunctions such as diabetes. They also co
ncluded that the impaired kidney function connected with diabetes mellitus might
explain the higher levels of magnesium in the urine, which combined with insuff
icient magnesium intake, caused the high blood sugar levels.
These results correlate with the findings of Carolyn Dean, MD, ND, author of the
popular book on the subject called "The Magnesium Miracle", and Medical Directo
r of the Nutritional Magnesium Association. www.nutritionalmagnesium.org
According to Dr. Dean, "Magnesium plays a pivotal role in the secretion and func
tion of insulin; without it, diabetes mellitus is inevitable. Measurable magnesi
um deficiency is common in diabetes and in many of its complications, including
heart disease, eye damage, high blood pressure, and obesity. When the treatment
of diabetes includes magnesium, these problems are prevented or minimized."
Naheed Ali, MD, a leading expert in diabetes mellitus and a passionate patient a
dvocate says, "Magnesium deficiency results in the poor functioning of insulin,
which is the primary weapon of the body to maintain a healthy blood sugar level.
With insulin not functioning properly, the chances of developing diabetes are i
ncreased."
Dr Dean shares these 3 healthy tips for the prevention and treatment of diabetes
mellitus:
1.Include frequent small meals of protein (fishâ especially wild salmon, to avoid mer
curyâ and free-range chicken and meat) and complex carbohydrates (whole grains, legum
es, and vegetables), as well as the avoidance of simple sugars and white flour.
2.Use stevia as a natural sweetener which comes from the leaves of a plant that
grows in South America and avoid the sugar substitute aspartame, which can worse
n blood sugar control and cause weight gain, headaches, nerve damage, and eye da
mage, because it is made partly from wood alcohol, which breaks down to formalde
hyde.
3.Supplement with an absorbable form of magnesium. You cannot get sufficient mag
nesium from foods alone due to the depleted soils and processed foods that our m
odern diets consist of. Not all forms of magnesium are absorbable by the body. O
ne of the most absorbable forms of magnesium that is safe is magnesium citrate i
n powder form.
