This clearly shows that PTA does not have
any mechanism to maintain the data of
mobilephone subscribers in Pakistan and
it only relies on mobile phone operators
for all sort of statistics.
At this time of year when Pakistan has just
started to calculate the after effects of
massive floods which resulted in displace-
ment of more than 20 million people from
their homes, when the entire world is sus-
pecting us and pushing us to “do more”
and eliminate the terrorists from our land,
when law and order situation is at worst,
this kind of statement can only shake the
confidence of every Pakistani who believe
that the watch dog is monitoring the
communication companies day and night.
Apart from security reasons, this state-
ment is technically wrong by any means.
Today, it is much easier to maintain the
record at run time with the help of most
advanced and strongest databases on
earth. It seems PTA tried to escape the sit-
uation by issuing such statement just to
hold high its claim of 100 million sub-
scriber mark and at the same time it does
not want to offend few of the operators
who are really facing this menace of dead
and inactive SIMs (Subscriber Identity
Module).
Daily Times recently published a telecom
survey of June 2010 conducted by Lirnea-
sia, a research centre of IT and Telecom
which estimated that 22.8 percent of
99.18 million subscriber base is in active as
people carry more than one SIM.

ApnaTime.com, “It has not happened over
night, it is a result of costly issuance of
more than required GSM licenses, imbal-
ance tax structure, premature price war,
improper monitoring and craze to remain
abreast of Indian Telecommunication sec-
tor in order to boast early achievements”.
Lets match a statement of Jon Eddy Ab-
dullah, CEO, Telenor Pakistan which he
gave in July 2009 in an interview, “Pakistan
had the lowest call rates in the world and
a continuous reduction in charges, as seen
in the past, to attract customers was no
more viable for the future as the industry
had already hit rock bottom”.
“This means that in the long term, having
five operators in a market with intense
competition and low prices may not re-
main feasible anymore. This can result in
anything from mergers and acquisitions
to dropping out of the market”, he further
added.

ishes, it helps the economy by attracting
foreign direct investment (FDI), contribut-

generating employment and increasing
productivity of almost every sector. There-
fore, it is imperative that the taxation
structure for the mobile industry is ration-
alized further”

sector declined from US $ 1.64 Billion in
2008-09 to US $ 1.13 Billion in 2009-10.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Telecom
which was US $ 815 Million in the year
2008-09 shrunk to mere US $ 374 Million.
FDI reduced dramatically because there
was no juice left in earnings. GSM sector
contributed PKR 6.6 Billion activation tax
in 2009-10 toward national exchequer al-
most 53% less than 2008-09 when it was
PKR 14.1 Billion and this happened be-
cause the entire telecom sector could only
add 4.8 million subscribers in 2009-10
which was 6.3 million in 2008-09 and 24.8
million in 2007-08.
Lack of interest from the operators is also
visible in the expansion area where, all 5
GSM companies could only add 1,967 Cell
Sites in 2009-10. The total number of Cell
Sites in Pakistan stands at 30,126 today

in 2007-08 and 13,725 in 2006-07. Mo-
bilink and Warid remained lowest in-
vestors in this area during 2009-10.
Statistics reveal that it will not stop here,
indicators will decline further in the fol-
lowing months. For the last 2 years, SIMs
are being sold at throw away prices just to
remain a head in number game and the
cheapest possible rates are being offered.
It seems, at this time, operators are less
concerned about expansion plans, they
want to sell more SIMs to those who are
already carrying multiple SIMs.
Analysts say, If actual number of SIMs are
announced the value of operators will
come down accordingly and this will be
very difficult for them in the 2011-2012
when most of the operators will be busy
in consolidation because value of any op-
erator is calculated by the number of ac-
tive customers it has.
In Pakistan a subscriber with single CNIC
can purchase 10 SIMs of each operator.
That means a single subscriber can easily
purchase 50 lawful SIMs in total. Practically
speaking no single subscriber can handle
more than 5 SIMs but there are sub-
scribers who are having more than 20
SIMs in their name. These excessive SIM
cards remain in-active for the entire year
unless the respective operator run an
offer/scheme for the unused SIMs and
give an incentive to the subscriber in
shape of free minutes, unlimited SMSes
and prizes. This activity gives a temporary

life to the dead SIMs which again go back
to the deep pockets unless another offer is
made. Such an offer generates minimal
revenue but increases the capital value of
an operator.
According to PTA's definition for an active
subscriber, “A subscription would be
counted as `Active Subscription` if the
subscription that is registered in the inter-
nal subscriber system of mobile service
provider (i.e HLR) makes any revenue gen-
erating activity including Outgoing (Voice
Calls, SMS, MMS), Incoming (Voices calls)
and Others (Recharge activity, Roaming
services, Data transmissions including
GPRS/internet access, data transfers, re-
ceipt sessions), during last 90 days”
despite of this definition, operators keep
running advertisements to activate the SIMs
which are dead/inactive for past 90 days.
Such offers violates this very rule of PTA.
It has been observed that PTA is not paying
attention to this issue which has created
havoc in the telecom sector. Due to very
un-real total subscriber base, the ARPU
which stands in actual at more than PKR
360(if only active subscriber are consid-
ered) comes down to mere PKR 200 (if 100
Mn subscribers are considered) which has
proven unhealthy for the FDI in Pakistan.
Authority will have to exercise its powers
to create a balance the way Indian regula-
tor TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of
India) has done during the last few weeks.
Similar to the situation in Pakistan, Indian
telecom operators have been claiming the
combined subscriber base to have
reached 687.7 million at the end of Sep-
tember 2010. The multiple-SIM phenome-
non has also created unfeasible
environment for the investors besides rais-
ing the security threats in India.
In order to save the entire sector Indian
regulator TRAI has recalculated the entire
subscriber base and found that 70 % of
the total claimed subscriber base is active.
The actual customer has been recalcu-
lated as 482 million active wireless sub-
scriber.
This is the first time that TRAI has re-
vealed the active number of subscriber
base using the Visitor Location Register
(VLR). This system of calculating sub-

who make calls or send SMS regularly.
This is worth mentioning here that TRAI
also consider the 90 days period for a
SIM to be assumed as active.
If PTA says, “there are no international
norms to record multiple SIMs being
used by the users therefore the PTA
records no such data. With regard to “in-
active subscriber data”, it says it does
not record any such data” then it will
have to reconsider its policy and prac-
tice what is in the interest of our coun-
try. PTA collect huge taxes and license
fee every year. It becomes the duty of
the authority to maintain a level playing
field for everyone.
There are bigger milestones to be
achieved than a fake 100 million figure. n

network to wake them up when the user

All this signalling takes time, up to two
seconds, so to avoid frustrating delays for
the user, some networks keep the smart-
phone in the Active mode to cut response
time. But this drains the battery, so hand-
set manufacturers developed Fast Dor-
mancy software that returns the
smartphone to the battery-saving Idle
state very quickly.
The trouble is that many smartphone
applications are set to connect to the net-
work every few seconds, such as an email
application checking for new messages.
Signalling goes up as the smartphone fre-
quently switches between states and this
eats network capacity, sometimes block-
ing other phones from even making calls.
Nokia Siemens Networks solves this
problem with a different approach. Instead
of keeping handsets idle, it maintains
them in another state called Cell_PCH. This

questions for its manufacturers. Technology

to fulfill the needs of a mobile user.
Contrary to this, in 2010, the prospects, of such
a machine which is much smaller than a com-
puter and too much powerful than a cell
phone, are very high. Apple plunged into this

million iPads in less than one month from April
to May 2010 and by mid of October, it had sold
more than 4.19 million units worldwide.

marvelous piece of machine that is yet to
be launched officially in Pakistan. The com-
pany has set its launch date to be the 3rd
week of December 2010. Luckily, we had a
chance to play with this gadget before it
hits the stores. As as I am writing this re-
view, Samsung Galaxy Tab has proven to
be a perfect and unbeaten competitor of
Apple iPad. So far, Samsung has sold 1 mil-
lion Tabs world wide following the success
of Samsung Galaxy S which it claims to
have sold nearly 10 million units since its
launch. After the success of Galaxy S, it was
much easier for Samsung to work on
something like Tab. They only had to make
it bigger and stronger, both, physically and
technically.
We reviewed Samsung Galaxy S (I9000) in
September 2010 and found it to be the
best of Samsung has ever produced.
Whereas, Samsung Tab share almost
everything Galaxy S had apart from the
fact that manufacturer added 3 inches to
its size and taken away 2 megapixels from
the camera. Just like I9000 it is equipped
with 1GHz hummingbird processor and
powerVR SGX540 graphic accelerator,
512MB RAM, a complete connectivity set
and 16GB internal storage. The operating
system has been upgraded from Android
2.1 to its latest 2.2 Froryo.
Though, Tab is larger than Galaxy S but de-
sign wise both are slimmest in their own
categories. On this very large phone cum
computer, you will find minimal hardware
control. A Volume Rocker and
Power/Screen Lock Key on the right side
similarly, SIM card tray and microUSB card
slot on the lower part of the right side.
Tab does not have a standard microUSB,
instead it has a 30-pin port which it uses
for the charger as well as the miniHDMI
port on the multimedia stand. Our test
piece was only accompanied by a charger
therefore, we could not connect it to our
PC for data sharing. We only used Blue-

tooth for the data sharing which was
rather slow and painful for larger files. It
could only shifted our data at an average
of 100 kb/s.
The left side is all empty except for the mi-
crophone pinhole. On the top, 3.5 mm jack
is located which is pretty exposed without
any lid/cover

of the Tab. The Galaxy Tab does not charge
over the USB cable, therefore, using a
charger into this 30-pin is the only way to
pump in the life.
The front of Tab is TFT capacitive touch-
screen, 16M colors having display of 600
x 1024 pixels measuring 7 inches. The
screen is Gorilla Glass Display. What is
this? From the definition, Gorilla Glass is
an un-scratchable, un-shatterable mate-
rial used as a protective window for your
mobile phone, PMP, or laptop display.
This glass is fingerprint-prone, no matter
how frequently you clean it, fingerprints
will never go away but don't worry,
when screen is active, it appears quite
clean.
Other than this, the front display is im-
pressive, you can not compare it to Su-
perAMOLED which Samsung uses in
other cellphones, but still it works very
well to win you heart.
The sensitivity of the front glass is su-
perb a very slightest of touch of your
bare finger will be registered, for sure.
There is video-call camera and the ambi-
ent light sensor on the top of the display
whereas, at the bottom, below the dis-
play, there are four capacitive buttons,
Back, Home, Context Menu and dedi-
cated Search key. All are large enough to
be used easily with comfort.
Rare of the Tab is all white with only 3.2
megapixel camera and its LED flash. The
battery cover is not removable so if some-
thing happens to your battery, you will
need to visit Samsung's service centers.

The Tab is equipped with Android's latest,
2.2 Froyo. The home screen has the capac-
ity to offer you 9 panes to populate with
widgets/short cuts to applications/folders.
You will hardly like to populate 3 to 4
panes as extra will never be required. Even
all 4 home screen panes are very rarely
used on my Ubuntu 10.04 OS that I use on
my notebook.
Notification Area
There is something unique to this
gadget and that is 3 soft buttons beauti-
fully placed at the bottom of the home
screen which are Email, Web browser
and the Home. It is the center one, Home
which is used for alternating between
your main menu and you homescreen.
The Notification area resides at the top
of the screen holds easy access to Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth, GPS, Sound Toggles and two
interesting features, Auto-rotation
switch (which can enable and disable
the accelerometer-based rotation) and
Brightness Control knob. Underneath,
you see the entire status of the ma-
chine whether it is a missed call, SMS or
an email.

what ever capacity of camera it has, is
enough for its operations as far as the
earpiece thing is concerned, good hand
free and bluetooth devices are available
in the market. We have no idea if Sam-
sung will make available the physical
keyboard with it that docks on the HDMI
interface through its 30-pin port, never-
theless, this 380 grams of machine is
worth buying. n

Nokia has been promoting C3 as a social device, much
slower and less responsive than its big brother, E5 which
can be called a better version of C3. Yes, apparently this de-
vice will attract you as if you are holding some expensive
smartphone. Probably, Nokia has planned this way, to as-
semble the low cost ingredients into better looking outer
cover that will give an impression of holding an expensive
device unless you operate it for a while.
But unlike C3 which we reviewed last month, this
phone is more suitable to be called as a budget social
phone mainly for youth as a target customer. But Nokia
launched this phone in Pakistan at Rs. 20,000 plus, a price
range still considered to be expensive for young people.
Nokia may have planned to sell C3 to young audience
and offered E5 to some serious user or office going people
who always want to hold a smartphone in their hands. Lets
see which category of people find it more feasible for
them.

The outer part of the phone meas-
ures as 115 x 58.9 x 12.8 mm and weighs
almost 126g. The box contains the
phone, a charger, USB data cable to be
used with your PC, low quality head-
phones and a 2GB microSD card that
was missing in C3. Nokia could have put
a decent quality headphones but I think
they have started to ignore this aspect
and expect the user to use their own
better quality stuff instead. This way,
Nokia has tried to keep the cost down
but still we would like to ask Nokia to
start including better quality accessories
as most of the Chinese phones of un-
known brand come with quality head-
phones.
This isn't a heavy phone. The front
side prominently shows the 4-rows
compact QWERTY keyboard. The upper
part is 2.36 inches of display screen
which is low in resolution and does not
impress while browsing a website or
playing a game. Sunlight legibility is also
not good and it would be a little difficult
to view your screen.
Front and back of E5 is all plastic ex-
cept for the metallic battery cover. The
phone has minimal hardware controls
on either sides. The left side is just bare
apart from the key to remove the bat-
tery cover which is also present on the
right side. The right side also houses the
volume control key which is a little low
on quality side. Occasionally you will
find it a little rough while increasing or
decreasing the volume level.
Charger plug, 3.5mm audio jack and
the microUSB port which is hidden
under the flap are located on the top of
the phone. On the rear, it has 5mega
pixel camera, LED flash and the loud-
speaker grill. An interesting feature of
LED flash light is that you can lit it by
pushing the space bar key sseven if the
key pad is locked.

Left and Right selection from the very
same menu. You can assign to bring up to
15 applications on the home screen. It
also offers 6 themes for the Home Screen

theme of your entire phone, then
“Themes” option should be looked into
under the Personalization menu.

commenting. It does not allow you to chat
with your friends unless you open the
facebook site in full mode through Opera
Mobile 10 (download it from Ovi store for
free). There is another application (Face-
book Chat) available at Ovi which will let
you chat with your facebook friends the
way you normally do it on your PC.
Another interesting application that
we enjoyed was “Skype”. You can always
make and receive calls on your phone for
free using your internet connection, not
to mention, operator will charge the inter-
net usage.

Adding contacts is easy on Symbian
and you can store practically unlimited
contacts in E5. You can sort them by first
name or the last one. You can put the fa-
vorite contacts on the home screen along
with their pictures.

you may group your contacts and give
each group a specific ringtone. Calling is
easy, loud and crisp, we found no prob-
lem with that.
Internet
connectivity/browsing
Internet connectivity is handled well
in this phone. You can set the option to
fix your connection type or you can set
it to ask you every time it tries to con-
nect the internet. In a Wi-Fi area, it auto-
matically scans and connects the access
point.
Due to limited screen size and low reso-
lution, you will probably not enjoy brows-
ing the websites having rich content.
Opera Mobile Browser with multi-tab support
While navigating, virtual mouse cur-
sor and a mini-map help scrolling the
large sites. If you scroll longer, the mini-
map gets activated automatically and
let you use it as an overview.
Browsing on the default browser is
not really enjoyable unless you install
Opera Mobile 10 from the Ovi Store
which also gives the option to start as
many tabs as you can manage easily.
The default browser of Symbian also re-
mained inefficient to manage all the
flash based content which is an old
problem of Symbian based browser.
As far as Youtube is concerned, its
dedicated application takes care of
videos in a better way.

Music player is simple and can han-
dle MP3, AAC, eAAC+ and WMA formats
quite well. Sound quality is excellent,
not the loudest but we experience a
clean sound with and without head-
phones. Of course, headphones that
Nokia provides in the box are real low in
quality so you have to rely on your own.
Music player is also accompanied by
preset equalizer and sound settings
which you can edit anytime.
Music files can be sorted by artist,
album, genre. Composer is automatic
and searching tracks by gradual typing
of the desired name is also available.
Video player is not the domain of
Nokia E5. On this very small low res
screen it will not give you any kind of
treat. We could only play movies which
we downloaded from the Ovi store. The
player never accepted our own .mp4
movies despite of many tries. DivX/XviD
support is out of question unless you
download a separate application for that.
fm radio/Internet radio
With RDS support FM radio plays al-
most all the channels in town, similarly,
internet radio is an extra bonus and
gives you plenty of choices to select
your music from provided you are con-
nected through Wi-Fi as it will keep
buffering on GPRS/EDGE.

Though Nokia E5 is equipped with
much desired 5 MP camera but in order
to keep the cost down Nokia has used
the fixed-focus lens which does not ful-
fill the expectations. Despite of LED
flash, 2592 x 1944 pixels of resolution
and several camera settings pictures are
not noise free. The lens is also not pro-
tected therefore, finger smudges and
scratches can easily distort your pre-
cious moments.
On the other hand, videos recording
at 15 fps is very much poor. We will re-
peat our statement here, just like video
player, video recording is also not the
domain of Nokia E5.

Office is full of supportive applica-
tions including Mobile Office (Word,
Office Application
Excel, Power point) and Adobe Acrobat
for PDF. Editing feature is also good
while working with Microsoft office files.
Zip manager, multiple alarm, converter,

fice functions when you are moving.

With the strength of social applica-
tions and basic office work support this
phone is very much feasible for office
going people. The phone will not stuck
or crash no matter how many applica-
tions you are running except for little
jerky attitude when memory usage ex-
ceeds defined limit.
Still camera is not impressive on E5
but video playing and video recording
are one of the worsts we camera across
on any Symbian mobile recently. The
price of E5 is dropping regularly, so if
you people are considering to buy C3,
we would suggest to save a little more
cash and go for E5 if you can trade off
between bad video experience and
good social application performance.

n Minerals can play vital role in coun-
try’s economy. Balochistan is a region of
abundant resources but unfortunately
the resources not have yet been utilized
in a best way. The government’s vision is
to transform these resources into a
source of revenue for the province so
that Balochistan would be self-sufficient
with in coming years. The security situa-
tion in the country has been a big rea-
son to hamper international investment.
While governments, both federal and
provincial invite the foreign investors to
come invest, it is important that con-
ducive environment is created so that
FDI can flow in.
Meanwhile when not a lot is hap-
pening in Pakistan and especially
Balochistan in terms of big investments,
Tethyan Copper Company (TCC) can kick
off the first ever large scale Copper-Gold
project at Reko Diq having 5.9 billion
tones of mineral resource within four to
five years with an initial investment of
3.3 billion US dollars.
There has been an uproar in the
media recently about the project saying
that it is ‘ripping-off’ Pakistan. However

if one looks beyond media hype and ex-
amine the regulatory structure of min-
ing industry in Pakistan, the nature of
the global mining business and the
terms of agreement between TCC and
the provincial government of Balochis-
tan , it will be revealed that the Reko Diq
project is, in fact favorable deal for Pak-
istan and Balochistan.
TCC, a joint venture of Canadian Bar-
rick Gold and Chillian Antofagasta has
completed the exploration of the de-
posit in Reko Diq and submitted de-
tailed feasibility report to government
of Balochistan in August. Reko Diq is sit-
uated 500 KM from Quetta in north-west
of Balochistan and 70 KM west of
Naukundi town of Chaghi district, bor-
der Afghanistan and Iran. The company
was named after the name of Tethyan
belt, a well-known geological formation
known for copper deposits that runs
across central and southeast Europe,
Turkey, Iran, Pakistan through Hi-
malayan region into Burma, Malaysia, In-
donesia and Papua New Guinea.
When compared with all other Ex-
ploration Licenses issued by the provin-
cial government under the Balochistan
Mineral rules, none of the licenses have
government’s participation except in
the case of Reko Diq project. So when
this project goes into production, gov-
ernment will earn 25% of profit in addi-
tion to royalties and taxes. While the
other projects if they go into production
will generate only royalties and taxes. So
it seems that this very important advan-
tage is being over shadowed in faulty
and inadequate analyses of mining in-
dustry practices.
TCC’s investment in Reko Diq project

only benefit Balochistan but also Pak-

The estimated production of 22 bil-
lion pounds of copper and 13 million

program for its X3 high-speed, long-range Hybrid Helicopter
demonstrator. The aircraft is equipped with two turboshaft
engines that power a five-blade main rotor system and two
propellers installed on short-span fixed wings, combining the
vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities and full hover
flight capabilities of a helicopter with the fast cruise speeds of
a turboprop-powered aircraft. On November 29, the X3
reached the program’s Step 1 speed objective by attaining a
true airspeed of 180 knots (333 km/h or 207 mph) in level
flight at a reduced engine power level.

Fujitsu Laboratories has announced a two-in-one energy harvesting de-

vice that can convert both light and heat into electricity. With no electri-
cal wiring or batteries to replace, Fujitsu says that this sort of device can
be manufactured from organic materials keeping costs to a minimum.
Devices that use photovoltaic cells to convert light to electricity or tem-
perature differentials to harness heat are not new, but by combining the
two on a single hybrid device, Fujitsu says it can double the energy-cap-
ture potential.
Fujitsu's diagram shows how such a device, which contains both N-type
and P-type semiconductor materials, can operate in both photovoltaic
mode (left) and thermoelectric mode (right).
The company points out the great potential for such technology in med-
ical fields where it could be used in sensors to monitor certain bio-sig-
nals. In addition, because the technology can generate power without
electric wires or the need for battery replacement, it could also be of use
in remote areas (or even in space, presumably) where it isn't convenient
to send humans to maintain the device.

n Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) joined hands with Alcatel
Lucent (ALU) Pakistan to donate laptops to the children of SOS Village as a
Corporate Social Responsibility gesture. Laptop donation ceremony was
held recently at SOS Village, Bahria Town, Islamabad. Chairman PTA Dr. Mo-
hammad Yaseen and CEO ALU, Mr. Aadil Rauf attended the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion Chairman PTA Dr. Mohammed Yaseen said that
Government and private sector should work together and ensure that
Corporate Social Responsibility must at all times remain a priority, espe-
cially in Pakistan’s perspective where disparities remain high. He appreci-

Telecommunication Authority (PTA) an-

When you’re aiming to break records, there’s no reason to just
aim for one, when you knock a couple of them down in one
try. That’s what the owner of the TÛRANOR PlanetSolar, the
world’s largest solar powered boat, is trying to do. He’s already
got the record for the world’s largest solar powered boat, and
now he is aiming to be the first person to sail around the
globe without using any fossil fuels at all.
The TÛRANOR PlanetSolar is owned by one Immo Ströher,
who is a German entrepreneur. He took off in the PlanetSolar
just over a month ago, and intends to sail around the world
without using any fossil fuels at all If he can succeed, that
would make him the first person to accomplish it. If you find
yourself in Miami or Cancun in the next mont, you might be
able to catch a glimpse of the PlanetSolar, as it is scheduled to
stop there during the next month.
As for the boat itself, it measures in at 5,700 square feet. Most
of that is covered in solar panels. The energy collected from
the solar panels is stored in a lithium ion battery. It took Immo
Ströher $17.5 million to build the PlanetSolar.

google's cr-48 chrome os laptop

ditches the caps-lock and function keys
No caps-lock or function keys are to be found on Google's
new Cr-48 Chrome OS laptops. And no hard drive or Google
branding for the blacked-out notebook computers either. The
Cr-48 laptop, unveiled recently at All Things Digital's Dive Into
Mobile conference in San Francisco, also won't be found for
sale in any retail stores. Instead, the computers that look to be
built for Darth Vader will be given away as a part of Google's
Chrome operating system pilot program.
The Cr-48 will be built in limited numbers, by Acer, and sent to
an even-more-limited number of approved users to test out
the "work in progress" Chrome OS and provide feedback to
Google on how the Web-based system works.
Anyone over 18 can apply to take part in the pilot program.
No word yet on just how many Cr-48s will be made or how big
the pilot program will be.
The top-row function keys have been abandoned in favor of
media keys that will handle the playing, pausing, volume and
assorted controls for movies, music and other media.
The laptops, named for an isotope of the element Chromium,
run Web-based applications and connect to the Internet via
Wi-Fi or 3G wireless networks.Because the Cr-48 will rely on
the Internet to run all applications, a traditional hard drive has
been ditched in favor of enough flash memory to store the
software needed to connect to the Web.The computers will
feature a 12-inch display, weigh 3.8 pounds, hold about an
eight-hour battery charge and boot up in 10 seconds or re-
sume from sleep instantly.
A camera above the screen is included, as is one USB-port and
a large Apple-esque trackpad.While the Cr-48 won't be avail-
able to consumers, Acer and Samung will release other
Chrome OS laptops next year, though no information has
been made as of yet on exact release dates or prices.

Jawbone Jambox - small size, big sound

Jawbone, a company better known for its Bluetooth headsets,
has now released a Bluetooth speaker system called the JAM-
BOX that makes use of two powerful acoustic drivers and
ultra-small speakers that work in concert with an innovative
moving-wall passive bass radiator packed inside an airtight
enclosure. The company says this is the first time this technol-
ogy has been seen in a personal speaker system and delivers
more punch than you'd expect from such a small unit.
The JAMBOX pumps out 85dB with a frequency range of 60 Hz
– 20 kHz to deliver high quality highs and lows that can be felt
as well as heard. It weighs only 327 grams (12 oz) with dimen-
sions of 15 x 5.7 x 4 cm (5.9 x 2.2 x 1.5 in) – adding up to small
size, big sound.
With Bluetooth connectivity the JAMBOX is easily connected
to a computer or smartphone, and without the need for audio
cables it can be carried around from room to room – or used
as a boombox wherever you go. Now the kids at the bus stop
playing their favorite tracks on their mobile phones can do so
without it being a completely low fidelity experience. With an
eight hour battery life they can even loiter at the mall inflict- can be updated with new apps and features through Jaw-
ing their taste in music on passers by all day. Equipped with a bone's online platform, MyTALK. Priced at US$199 it does have

iSuppli Ranks Kingston Technology
as World’s Top DRAM Module Maker
n Kingston Technology, Company, Inc., the independent world leader
in memory products, has announced it was ranked No. 1 in the world by
independent research firm iSuppli in the third-party DRAM module mar-
ket for the first six months of 2010. According to the report, Kingston’s
revenue from memory modules was more than $2.56 billion (U.S.), giving
it 45.8 percent of the total third-party memory module market.
“The strong relationships we have maintained for many years with our
partners helped carry us through the downturn of 2008 and part of
2009,” said John Tu, co-founder, Kingston. “We are fortunate that these re-
lationships allow Kingston to stay strong.”
“Our good fortune has come from taking care of our employees and cus-
tomers since we started this company over 20 years ago,” said David Sun,
co-founder, Kingston. “We can only be successful if we continue to work
hard and take care of each other.”
In 2009, iSuppli ranked Kingston as the world’s top memory module
maker with revenues of more than $2.85 billion and a 40.3 percent share
of the third-party DRAM market. The iSuppli report covers memory mod-
ule revenue only. It does not cover Kingston’s NAND Flash revenues. In
February, Kingston announced that its 2009 global revenues were $4.1
billion, the second highest in company history.
Kingston’s memory module products include branded or system-specific
memory; ValueRAM industry-standard memory built to JEDEC specs and
designed for system integrators and white box builders; and HyperX
memory for gamers and PC enthusiasts who demand higher perform-
