 Introduction

Because of a lack of information in English

about the area and as Marseille will be in
2013 the European capital of culture (this
event should attract many visitors from
abroad), I thought this little guide would
be a nice gift to this place where I live
since 1987.
Cours Julien is not
the official name
for the area. In fact
it is composed of 3
areas, Cours Julien itself, Notre Dame du Mont and Place Jean
Jaures. Cours julien itself was in the past a food market and has been
transformed in early1980s into a wide space with a fountain and
planted with trees with a parking, and a metro station underneath.
Cours Julien and surroundings is not a big area, it is a mix of
squares, small pedestrian streets, old buildings and an amazing amount of street art, painted
walls, graffitis, and tags. It’s like a village in the heart of a big city. It’s the place to go if you
need to go away from the crowded center, to rest in cafés surrounded by trees and fountain,
to shop for different items than standard high street brands and goods, to see and/or to meet
the arty, creative and alternative people in Marseille.

 How to get there
Located on a small hill in the heart of the city center, it’s a 15 minutes
walk from the Vieux Port, 5 minutes from the famous Canebière, 2
underground stops from the railway station. If you come by car, which is
not really the best choice (especially during market days), 2 underground
parkings are located under Cours Julien and Place Jean Jaures. I would
also advice not to come on Sundays and Mondays as most of the shops
and restaurants are closed except when there is a special event.

Farmers market on Cours Julien: Wednesday morning
Big market on Place Jean Jaures: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday morning.
Usually cheap: food, clothes, fabrics, bargains. Very crowded on Saturdays.
Small market for flowers and plants on Place Jean Jaures: Wednesday
morning

Special Events
Plants and Gardens Fair twice a year in September and April during a
week end, the cours Julien is transformed into a botanic garden. Really
beautiful and wide selection of meditteranean and unusual plants. Next in
2010: September Saturday 4 & Sunday 5.
Second hand and Vintage Books Fair: monthly, every second Saturday of
the month
Handcrafts and designers fair. Next in 2010: Sunday October 3, 10h-19h

Christmas handcrafts & designers market Next in 2010 Fri 17, Sat 18 &
Sun 19 December, 10h-18h
Festival du Plateau. Yearly Festival du Plateau October Sat 2 et Sun 3 all
the area is full of music and events.

area for that. If you are patient and lucky, you may find good bargains.

In Cours Julien area there are numerous restaurants (around 100) for every budget and
tastes. I thought that instead of just simply listing everyone, it was better to make a selection
done by locals and based on experience. These are my friends and I favorites.
Notice : some are not open for lunch or not open for dinner. A vast majority is not open on
Sundays.
