4. Creating a Persistent LUI USB Stick

If you want to run Isabel more then once and you do not want to update Isabel and
Ubuntu and change your settings/customizations every time you boot your Live CD,
you should burn the ISO image to a USB stick in persistent mode. Persistence let’s you
do just that, you can have your settings saved to your USB stick and boot into your own
custom Live Isabel environment anywhere anytime. We explain here how to create a
persistent USB stick from a Windows and an Ubuntu Linux PC.

4.1. From a Windows PC

Unfortunately, there is no free partitioning tool that allows Windows to partition a
removable media device. This forces us to configure persistency as a file on the same
partition as the LUI ISO image. We will show step by step how to install the Live
Ubuntu ISABEL on a persistent USB stick using two different tools: UNetbootin and
U810.exe from PendriveLinux.

4.1.1. With U810.exe

This tool will create a persistent file size of 1GB to store all your changes and
customizations. You will need following items:

1) Windows PC
2) Live Ubuntu Isabel ISO image Live_Ubuntu_Isabel_X.X.iso downloaded in
Chapter 2
3) A 2GB or larger USB stick formatted as FAT32
4) Download the U810pIsabel.exe (contains the files to perform the conversion)

Download and launch the U810pIsabel.exe package from the Isabel download page
http://isabel.dit.upm.es/component/option,com_docman/task,doc_download/gid,939/Itemid,74/

This package is a modified version of the PendriveLinux utility you can find at
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/live-ubuntu-810-usb-persistent-install-windows/ that
uses the 7zip tool.

Launching U810pIsabel will extract the files into a folder called U810p automatically.
Place the Live_Ubuntu_Isabel_X.X.iso into this folder. Then, click on U810.bat file
and follow the onscreen instructions. This will burn a persistent LUI on the USB stick.

If successful, follow the instructions in chapter 5,

4.1.2. With UNetbootin

Unfortunately, this tool, though graphically nicer than U810pIsabel.exe, does not
activate persistency automatically and some manual changes need to be performed to
achieve the required feature. These easy steps are described below:

1) Windows PC
2) Live Ubuntu Isabel ISO image Live_Ubuntu_Isabel_X.X.iso downloaded in
Chapter 2
3) A 2GB or larger USB stick formatted as FAT32

steps need to be performed to enable persistency.
5) Download the persistence file from
8) Use a file browser to locate the file syslinux.cfg on your USB stick. Edit the file

One can create a persistent USB stick with Ubuntu version Intrepid Ibex 8.10 or higher
by installing it from a downloaded ISO image or from a running Live CD/DVD. The
same USB stick creation utility is used for both cases.

4.2.1. From a Live CD LUI or from a LUI ISO file

You will need following items and perform these steps:

1) Ubuntu Linux PC to create the USB boot stick

2) Live Ubuntu Isabel ISO image Live_Ubuntu_Isabel_X.X.iso downloaded in
Chapter 2 as ISO image or already burned on CD/DVD
3) A 1GB or larger USB stick
4) Boot your PC.
If you intend to create a persistent USB stick from a Live Ubuntu Isabel CD or
DVD media, restart your computer booting from that media.
If you want to create a persistent USB stick from an ISO image, you’re your
Ubuntu Linux PC and download this image.

6. Installing Ubuntu in your PC

If you plan to use Isabel, or any other application bundled with Ubuntu, regularly or you
are hosting an Isabel session an you need to install an Isabel commercial license, we
strongly recommend to install Ubuntu on your PC’s hard disk to improve system
performance.
To initiate the Ubuntu hard disk installation, just double click on the Install icon on the
desktop and follow the Installation Wizard instructions. This tutorial will guide you
through the steps you need to take.

6.1. Language selection

The first step is to confirm the language to be used for the hard drive installation. Select Figure 25: Location selection in the Ubuntu Installer
from the list the preferred one and then click Forward.

6.3. Keyboard layout

Verify that the keyboard you are using is the one chosen for the installation, if not,
change the keyboard layout most similar to your keyboard from the offered list. If you
keyboard does not match the one of Ubuntu, you may find difficulties in identifying the
location of certain characters, numbers or symbols. For example if you have an Spanish
QWERTY keyboard and you are installing Ubuntu in English, then the keyboard will be
mapped to English and therefore you will not be able to type tildes or special characters
easily. Verify in the test box that the chosen layout is ok and then click Forward.

6.4. Hard drive partitioning

This is the hardest part of the installation, since a wrong selection may destroy all your
data in your hard disk (consult with your local IT department before proceeding if you
have doubts). You must decide where you want to install the system. The installer will
try to suggest the best option for your system.

Figure 28: Customized partition selection (detail) in Ubuntu Installer

For more information about partitioning your hard drive, please refer to Ubuntu's wiki
at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/?action=fullsearch&context=180&value=partition.

6.5. User creation
Now you have to create a user for your final installed version. Fill in your identification
and preferred log in name.
If you are installing Ubuntu on a blank hard drive, then choose the first option Guided –
use entire disk. If you already have other operative systems such as Microsoft
Windows installed and you want to keep the data, chose Manual. You will be able to
resize the Windows's partitions to make room for Ubuntu or to install Ubuntu in an
available free and unpartitioned space of the drive.

Finally, if you are familiar with disk partitioning, you can manually edit the partition
table, create, edit, resize and remove partitions. If you do so, then you must select the
mounting points for the partitions in the next window. The default options, which
Ubuntu provides, are valid for the common users.
