GROWTH

There is no way that I could say my life has not changed or I have not grown as a
person while in the process of completing this program. The most notable change I have
observed within myself is that I have become much more open-‐minded, especially when it
comes to my spirituality. This is the area in which I feel I have grown the most throughout
my journey.
As you may know I recently finished my teaching credential. You probably also
know that California, as well as the entire country, is in a very bad recession and education
has taken the hardest hit. This being said, I started this program with the hopes that by the
time I was finished (in roughly a year-‐and-‐a-‐half or so) that I would have found a stable,
full-‐time teaching position and would be able to use the newfound skills I had learned in a
classroom of my own. Unfortunately, I have submitted applications to numerous school
districts, and I am having no luck whatsoever. Before taking this program, I know the old

although I’d admit I am slightly disheartened by the delay, I know that if it were not for the
things I have been exposed to in the program I would likely feel more pessimistic overall.
One of the most important skills I learned in completing the program is to accept the
things that I cannot change (Niebuhr, 1943). More specifically, there is nothing that I can
do about the economy or its effect on my career. During my time in the program, I have
learned to rely on God and allow him to takeover; I am very thankful that I have finally
learned this valuable lesson. I have been taught a way of God that I did not know before. I
can now reflect on all that has happened thus far in my journey to become a teacher, rather
than concentrating on the negatives. Through the “Cornerstones” (Bacer, Bruzzese, Silva,
2010), “Spiritual Reflections” (Bettger, Brown, 2010) and “Spiritual Focus” (Suffern, Silver,
2010) sessions, I have been reminded what God’s purpose is, and to appreciate and focus
Although this is not my ideal situation to be in, I am now aware that I am where I am
supposed to be at this exact moment in my life. I am thankful to God for being alive, and am
able to focus on the amazing things that I have in my life, such as my family, my husband,
and my education. I love the feeling of optimism that the program has bestowed in me and
it is truly the most personal growth that I have ever seen in myself since early college. I am
especially grateful to Azusa Pacific University and the teachers in the Educational
Technology program for helping me to appreciate my life as it is, and leave the rest to God.

My maturity as a professional has also grown immensely while completing the
program. In addition to learning to accept things as they are, another main aspect of my
growth has been in the exposure to special tools and technological skills that I can use to
improve learning inside the classroom in ways in which I had never before thought
possible.
One of the most beneficial things that I learned was how to establish a Personal
Learning Network in Educational Technology 517 (Bruzzese, 2010). Bruzzese (2010),
taught us how to find a network that can be in constant communication; one that focuses
on using technology while teaching, or has teachers in the same situation as us. I would
have never have thought of the all of the ways that a teacher can establish a Personal
Learning Network (Bruzzese, 2010); whether it be from Twitter (2011), Facebook (2011),
or Tappedin (2010), there are an endless amount of places that teachers can access to stay

While this program has run its course, I have also learned how to use programs that
I had never before been exposed to. The biggest difference in my professional life I have
seen is the ways that I now know how to incorporate technology into my classroom. For
example, I know that as soon as the school year begins, I will enroll each of my students
into Engrade (2003). Engrade (2003) is an online program that keeps track of student’s
grades and assignments that both students and parents can use to monitor student
progress. I will also be sure that I have a blog up and running, so that my students and
their parents can be in the loop as to what is going on in the classroom.
There is no doubt in my mind that I have learned many things in this program which
can be directly applied to my classroom. I also know that although I have experienced
much growth while in the program, I am not yet a full time teacher and can imagine the
possibilities of the future. I have many tools to utilize to help these dreams come true, most
of which I did not know were available before these courses. I know that there are many
that I will still learn, but this program has taught me more than I could have imagined and I
eagerly await the chance to create a technologically accessible classroom of my own.

Another area I feel I have grown more accomplished in is, the use of technology
overall. In other words, I have become much more computer savvy; from improving my
typing skills to becoming more comfortable using a computer, to the huge accomplishment
to completing a program entirely online. For example, although improving typing speed
might seem like a subtle change to most people, I am truly amazed at how the ability to
type quickly with ease has affected my efficiency as a teacher. There was a time that I had
to look at the keys in order to type anything, making communicating on a computer an
unpleasant experience; however, now I am able to type without looking away from the
screen. This improvement has made me more receptive to completing tasks on the
Also, when it comes to simple tasks on the computer, such as searching for a blog or
video, I have become much more efficient due to the technological skills I have acquired. I
now have the skills to discover the knowledge that I wish to possess. I have learned more

is capable of than I have ever have before. My family has even started to notice, because
they all call me now to ask me how to use a program that they don’t know how to use. And
if I don’t know how to use it, I have learned the best ways to find tutorials or refer them to a
site that would know more; I love this feeling of having knowledge that helps people,
I did not think that it would be possible to learn this many programs and this much
material using an online course, and it is incredible that we actually did it. There are so
many programs available online to help us learn all of this material, and never feel like we

I have learned so much in this program and I can’t believe it is coming to an end
already. I started this program over a year ago and in that short amount of time I have
learned all types of the ways to use technology in the classroom,. From creating a Personal
Learning Network in Educational Technology 517 (Bruzzese, 2010) to being much more
spiritual than ever, it has been a whirlwind of a ride, and I wouldn’t change any of it. I
would like to thank all of my professors in this program because without them I know there
is no way that I would have been able to complete this program. I also thank God, because I
know he was right alongside me, helping to guide me on the path to my dream.
