TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & Si
Off to Cambridge
YEAR 12 students Laura Bull and Leah Jones
have received a place on the Cambridge
Shadowing Scheme.
The Shadowing Scheme brings students from
schools without a tradition of top university
entry to Cambridge for three days in February.
Prospective students come to Cambridge
on the Thursday afternoon and stay until
Saturday lunchtime.
In that time they will spend time with a
current undergraduate, studying a subject
that you are interested in, who you ‘shadow’.
Students will see everything a Cambridge
does on a day-to-day basis: lectures,
supervisions, playing sport, going shopping,
socialising and so on. Laura will be going to ‘study’ Natural Sciences and Leah will be ‘studying’
History.
The school is also extremely proud of Lorna Douthwaite and Charlie Plumridge who have both
secured University offers from Cambridge University this year. Lorna will read Medieval and
Modern Languages and Charlie hopes to read Natural Sciences.

Tarporley Sixth Form Council has been honoured with the Diana Certificate of Excellence.
The award recognises the outstanding contribution of young people, aged 12-18, who work
together in groups to improve their communities, organisation or school. The Certificate
rewards those who go above and beyond to benefit others; by raising money for charity, or
campaigning on a local issue or mentoring younger children in their schools or youth groups.
Tarporley Sixth Form Council has been chosen because of their commitment and work in the
field of fundraising and supporting the development of PSHE for the Sixth Form.

Sixth Form College

Recycle your old batteries

Students at Tarporley High School and Sixth Form College joined the Eco-Schools group
just over two years ago with the aim to make a positive difference to the impact the school has
on the local environment.
The school, with the help of the Eco-Student Team, regularly recycles all the waste paper
produced in classrooms and have helped with the development of adapting the old heating
system so that it runs more efficiently and cheaper.
The latest addition to the important work these students are doing are the Old Battery
Disposal Boxes, available not only to students and staff in school but to all of you out there in
our local community. You will find the box situated in the School Library so you no longer have
to travel any great distance to dispose of your old batteries safely.
Batteries are one of the most dangerous items that we all discard because if they become
wet or corrode, they leak very strong acid and other dangerous chemicals into the ground.
The boxes are ventilated and are also leak proof and have been designed and manufactured
in the school’s technology department by Mr Chris Warner, Head Technician.
Please think twice next time you want to throw away your old batteries in the bin – come and
visit the school instead to ensure they will be disposed of safely.
Photograph shows some of our Eco-Team with Mr Chris Warner, Head Technician, Mrs
Tina Everton, Eco-Team Leader and Mr Bill Voyce, Head of Technology.

suggestions on how I can correct this?
A. Swimming is an excellent form and of course exercise
is great for yoir skin by stimulating the blood circulation
which brings with it fresh oxygen and nutrients to all skin
cells giving the skin a healthy glow. However if you are
regularly swimming in a chlorinated pool the chlorine can
be very aggressive on the delicate skin of the face. Combine
that with the length of time that swimmers are
often submerged in the water - it can all add up to
a potentially very unhappy skin! Before swimming
consider applying a protective barrier to your
skin such as petroleum jelly, this will help to
protect the delicate facial skin from the chemical
irritants in the water. Visit the newsletter page at
www.angelabartlett.co.uk for further top tips on
maintaining good skin condition during swimming
and other sports activities.

Bunbury WI
Bunbury WI have been entertained by their innovative Drama
Group who presented their ‘speedy’ but thoroughly entertaining
version of ‘The Sound of Music’. More musical entertainment
was on offer at our Christmas meal, when a fellow member
from a neighbouring WI played & sang for us, the conclusion
of a great year for our WI – good speakers, outings, lunches,
lectures, coffee & craft mornings and much more!
Our crafty members are looking forward to hearing about
patchwork quilting whilst February brings spectacular flower
arrangements – all to be shared by members.
Our Reading Group is thriving & a Lunch Club is our new
venture this year.
Visitors most welcome at 7.30pm, 2nd Thursday of the month.
