Grid Control 11g: Upgrading the 10.2.0.5.0 Management Agent to 11.1.0.1.0 on OEL 4.

7 Using the
agentDownload.linux Script.

Goal

This note is intended as a successful use case demonstration for comparison purposes by those trying to
upgrade the Enterprise Manager Grid Control 10.2.0.5.0 agent to 11.1.0.1.0 on Linux x86. This
demonstration may also represent the actions required and the display available for other similar
certified platforms.

The sequence of events during upgrade and the detailed prerequisites are summarized in the following
document, which should be considered the universal reference for Grid Control 11.1.0.1.0 installation:

Oracle® Enterprise Manager Grid Control Advanced Installation and Configuration Guide

11g Release 1 (11.1.0.1.0)

Part Number E16847-05

Chapter 13 Installing Oracle Management Agent Using agentDownload Script

Section titled: Prerequisites/ Table 13-1 Prerequisites for Installing Oracle Management Agent Using
agentDownload Script

The procedure described here may include alternative or different information (from the published
documentation) where it has been found helpful for the completion of the successful installation on the
specific platform and with the other specific conditions being used.

This same procedure with step-by-step screen shot graphics can be found here.
Solution

A) Prerequisites:

Prerequisites are extensively described in other documents. Listed below is a summary of where to go to
cover all of the prerequisites requirements.

1) See the following references for the detailed prerequisites associated with full installation of Grid
Control 11g using an existing database:

Oracle® Enterprise Manager Grid Control Advanced Installation and Configuration Guide

11g Release 1 (11.1.0.1.0)

Part Number E16847-03

Chapter 13 Installing Oracle Management Agent Using agentDownload Script

Section titled: Prerequisites/ Table 13-1 Prerequisites for Installing Oracle Management Agent Using
agentDownload Script

2) Environment requirements:

For the 11.1.0.1.0 Grid Control agent upgrade, the user environment should contain no references to
existing Oracle software locations, including TNS_ADMIN, ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID, PATH, etc. All
environment settings will be created by the installer from the information provided in the installation
process.
3) Linux x86 OS Requirements

While most prerequisites are generic, certain OS characteristics are required of the Linux x86
distributions. These OS packages must be available for proper installation and operation of Grid Control
11.1.0.1.0 on OEL 4.7:

make-3.80

binutils-2.15.92.0.2

gcc-3.4.5

libstdc++-3.4.5

GLIBC-2.3.4-2.19

4) Staging the 11.1.0.1.0 Agent Installation Source

The agent only full product installer should be staged in the OMS directory structure here:

.../oms11g/sysman/agent_download/11.1.0.1.0/linux/

Under this directory should also be the agentDownload.linux script which should be transferred to the
target host for execution.

B) Other Pre-upgrade Checks

1) The 11.1.0.1.0 Grid Control view should show the discovered 10.2.0.5.0 agent with status UP (green
arrow) and confirm its version as 10.2.0.5 on the Management Agents summary page .
2) The status response shows the versions of the interacting components:

10.2.0.5.0 agent

11.1.0.1.0 OMS

It also identifies the interacting URLs for agent/OMS communication and the agent Oracle Home
directory.
3) Obtaining the agentDownload.linux script.

In a browser, from the agent host, access this URL:

https://<OMS_host>:<upload _port>/agent_download.11.1.0.1.0/linux

The agentDownload.linux script will be available for transfer through http, if desired.

The transfer is quick because the script is very small.

4) Preparing the agentDownload.linux Script

The script is not executable as transferred, typically.

Change permissions accordingly to allow execution.

C) Running the Upgrade with the agentDownload.linux Script

1) Performing the Agent Upgrade with the agentDownload.linux script

Issue this command to initiate the upgrade process:

./agentDownload.linux –u –o <10.2.0.5.0_agent_Oracle_Base_path> /agent10g –b

<11.1.0.1.0_agent_Oracle_Base_path> -r <oms upload port>

Where:

-u is for upgrade

-o designates the 10.2.0.5.0 Oracle Home filepath

-b designates the 11.1.0.1.0 Oracle Base filepath

-r designates the OMS upload port from the upload URL

2) Agent Upgrade: Provide Registration Password

The agentDownload script execution is followed in the command session and will stop to ask for the
agent registration password.

Providing the agent registration password allows the agent to be secured.

Oracle strongly recommends that only secure agents are used in enterprise monitoring.
3) Installation Progress

The installer will show a detail of the progress in the command session of the installer.
4) End of Installation Message

The command session will eventually request that the root.sh script is run by root prior to configuring
the agent .
D) Post-upgrade Checks

1) Agent Status Post-Upgrade

Once the agent configuration is complete, a status should be taken with the 11.1.0.1.0 agent, since the
10.2.0.5.0 agent has been disabled.

The status should show:

- The agent version has been upgraded to 11.1.0.1.0

- The same URLs as were reported from the 10.2.0.5.0 agent status before upgrade

- The new 11.1.0.1.0 agent Oracle Home

- Data upload should be successful and the status output should show no backlog or that a backlog is
dropping with time.
2) Agent View from Grid Control Post-Upgrade

The Management Agents summary in Grid Control will show the new agent version.
